Iowa County Cemetery Stones and History 1844-1975 (manuscript)
by Pauline Lillie
ARMAH CATHOLIC CEMETERY p. 1
Or Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Cemetery
History by Pauline Lillie
Location
Dayton 78 Township, Range 12, Section 26, about 9 miles west of
North English on the blacktop F. 67, or about 2½ miles on V. 52
from Millersburg to black top then ½ mile west.
History
The cemetery history is the history of the Catholic Church. In the
1881 Iowa County History, it mentions one having been built in 1875.
and the cemetery adjoining, occuping about 20 acres with 100 graves.
The 1874 Atlas has it on the M.F. Wagner farm. P. 37- The 1900 Atlas
p. 15 on the Stephen Berry land, and the 1915 Atlas p. 35 located on
Stephen Berry farm.
It is located on the south side of the road; There has been written
a history of the church by Mary Harris; Pamplet Immaculate Concep-
tion Catholic Church at Armah, Iowa, of 3 pages. I suggest that any
one interested refer to this at the Record Center at Des Moines, for
information.
Condition
This a lovely well cared for cemetery; Last time I was there was on
a summer evening, and the setting sun on the beautiful church, and
the pine trees, a lovely sight, with shadows on the stones, made phosts
of memories of the past.
Remarks
People in the area now go to North English Catholic Church for this
one is closed. One of the most beautiful rural churches in Iowa county.
I for one would love to see it in use again, and when ever I go this
way I like to stop in walk into the cemetery, for there is so much
peace and quiet here.
Stones read by Phyllis Wennermark and Margaret M. Wagner Sept. 22/29
