[P.263] ìJohn Bunn, fifth son of James Bunn and Mary A[nn] Seabrook, was born 2 January 1850 in Berkhampstead, Staffordshire, England [Died, 3 October, 1929, Cherokee, Iowa], and came to this country while an infant, with his parents; was educated in country schools, and was a carpenter in early life, has been a farmer, insurance agent and merchant. He built the first house in Ida Grove, Iowa, and many rural school houses in Ida and Cherokee Counties, of that state; purchased 40 acres of land in Ida County, at $4.80 per acre, and engaged in farming for a time; moved from this farm to Washta, Cherokee County, in 1917; was at one time mayor of Washta, and carries a bullet in his neck, received while in discharge of his duty. [Family legend has it that the bullet was fired by Jesse James.] He was County Supervisor of Ida County about six years and of Cherokee County nine years; was a hardware and machinery merchant, and long served as justice of the peace; has built two homes, and purchased his present residence in Cherokee. He has been a member of the I.O.O.F., since 1889; joined the order at Holstein, Iowa; transferred [sic] to Quimby, Iowa; is a charter member and first Noble Grand of Spruce Lodge, No. 284 of Washta, where he still retains membership; is a member of Cherokee Encampment, No. 147. In the great blizzard of January 1888, Mr. Bunn had a memorable experience, becoming lost on the way from his place of business at Washta to his home in Ida County; he was accompanied by a neighbor, riding in a sleigh which was followed by a dog; fortunately, they came in contact with a haystack, and men and dog found some protection under the hay; the [p.264] warmth of the dogs body kept the men's feet from freezing and, by using their fists on each other they kept awake and thus escaped from fatal freezing. Mr. Bunn married 17 February 1874 near Worthington, Dubuque County, Iowa, Rebecca Parrott, daughter of Leven and Cornelia(Shawhan) Parrott now deceased. Children:

      Late in 1885 Peter Dibbern came to Galva,Iowa from Dethmarchen, Germany. He bought a section of land from the railroad two -one half miles southwest of Galva and cleared it off. He married Pauline Staben of Hamburg Germany in 1886.
      They had eight children. Bertha, born in 1888,married Cal Lovelace and died in 1982. Alma, born in 1889,married Henry Suiter and died in 1988. Eva, born in 1891married Richard Younie and died in 1975. Meta(Mattie), born in 1892 and died in 1916 at home after a short illness.Walter, born in 1894 and died in 1918 at Camp Gordon,Ga. Olga, born in 1895, married Carman Bossard
and died in 1989.Otto(Dick), born on 1897 and died in 1973. Hilda, born in 1898, married George Gale and died in 1980.
      Hilda and Olga went to Galva High School in the old school in town. All of the children walked to a country grade school one-half mile east of their farm home.       Peter Dibbern was born in Dethmarchen, Germany May 7,1852 and died at his home in Galva on September 5, 1915. Pauline (Staben) Dibbern was born in Hamburg, Germany March 27, 1863 and died in Cherokee, Iowa on July 15,1936. They are both burried in the Galva Township Cemetary,west of Galva.

Henry Peter Bubke was born in Ida County, Iowa in 1881 and died in 1964 in Bremerton, WA. He was the son of John (Johann) Frederick Bubke (1847-1926), and Theresa Schaefer (1856-1926). He married Margaret Jane Thompson November 28,1917 in Spokane, Washington. She was born November 21,1891 and died December 1980. She was the daughter of William Thompson and Margaret Cameron.

He was an Electrical Engieer for the Pugt Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, WA. They were members of the Presbyterian church.

1. Frederick Henry Bubke was born September 28,1918 and died September 27,1999. He was married.

2. William Bubke was born November 2,1920 and died March 3,2000. He was married.

Burton passed away at her home in Battle Creek on Sunday morning,after a two week illness,due to a stroke of Paralysis,which came suddenly.She was sur rounded by her children at the time,and the approach of the end was known.The funeral services were held at the Methodist church of Battle Creek,on Monday November 10,at 2:30 p.m.,conducted by Rev.T.J.Pierce of Ida Grove,and Interment to ok place at the Battle Creek Cemetery. Frances D. Beckwith was born in Lenawee County,Michigan,on August 15,1842,and departed th is life on Novermber 9,1919,age 75 years,2months,25 days.She was united in Marr iage at Patch Grove,Wisconsin.to William F. Burton.Together they came to Ida County,Iowa in 1876,which has been their home ever since.The husband and father passed on before her on May 8,1910.Of the union three sons and three daughters survive;Mrs.Mary Hunt of Prisgah,Ia.,Clinton Curton of Battle Creek;Mrs.Millie Zeitler of Hartington,Neb.,Homer Burton and Horace Burton both of Battle Creek;Mrs.Leona Chisholm also of Battle Creek.In these families she leaves twenty-five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.Three brothers are yet living;John Beckwith of Glyndon,Minn.,William of Tyge,Oregon;Charles Beckwith of Battle Creek.She had been a devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal church for many years.

Notes for HORACE WILLIAM BURTON: Body Found in Maple River. August 24,1933 Horce Burton Disappeared While Fishing.Had Been in Ill Health. Battle Creek,Ia. ,Aug. 23--Horce W. Burton of Battle Creek,Iowa.,was drowned in the Maple River some time thursday afternoon or night,August 17.He had gone to the river to fish Thursday afternoon and when he did not come back to supper,his twin brother ,Homer with whom he made his home,became alarmed and a search was Instigated.Different parties kept up the search all night and early Friday morning until the body was found near the bridge south of the Chris Hummelgaard farm.Mr.Burton was not in the best of health and as his body was found in shallow water it is fear that he suddennly became ill and fell into the water and was unable to save himself. Horace William Burton was born near Battle Creek,Janurary 13,1883 and departed from this life Thursday August 17,1933 at the age of 50 years,7 months, and 5 days.He was a son of the late William and Frances D.(Beckwith) Burton and spent his entire life in and around Battle Creek public schools.Mr.Burton was a cheerful disposition and although he suffered from an almost life long affliction,was always ready to speak a kind word.He leaves to mourn his twin brother Homer and Clinton,and a sister Mrs.Ona Chisholm,all of Battle Creek,and a sister Mary Hunt of Pisgah,Ia.,and a sister Mrs.Millie Ferrier of Sioux city,besides several nieces and nephews and a host of friends by whom be will be sadly missed.Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon August 20 th in the Presbytreian church with Rev.R. Jinkerson of the Church of God in Ida Grove,officiating.Interme nt was made in Mt.Hope Cemetery with Max Spiese,Vern Bliss,Alva Morris,Ray Flet cher,Henry Wert and Wm.Warren acting as pallbears.

He was born on January 13,1883,at Battle creek.On April 29,1914 he married Cora Wickey.They farmed before moving to town where was engaged in Mason and Cement construction bussiness.He retired in 1946. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Frist Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek,Iowa.Burial will be in the Ida G rove Cemetery.Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today,with the family present at the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Battle Creek. Mrs. Ferguson was born Aug. 3,1913,near Crothersville,Ind.,the daughter of Herb ert Edgar and Eulalia Rutherford Abbott.They came to Ida County in 1915 and far med around Battle Creek and Cushing,Iowa.She earned her eight-grade certificate in a county school near Cushing.She married Clarence A. Burton on March 11,192 9,in Elk Point,S.D.He died in a farm accident in 1938.She married Otto H. Fergu son on Jan 12,1944.They lived on the family farm northwest of Ida Grove until h is death in January 1969.She was a member of the Frist Presbyterian Church in B attle Creek.She had work at Mid Sioux Opportunities in Cherokee and was a volun teer with the American Cancer Society.She enjiyed gardening,traveling,animals a nd playing cards.

Survivors include;five daughters;Verna Ree Sc humann;Elaine and her husband Walter Strong of Ida Grove;Beverly and her husban d Jerry Tippling of Bridgewater,Iowa;Connie Ferguson of Elk Point;and Cathy Jo Schmidt of Battle Creek;two sister-in-laws,LaVerne Burton Griffith of Salt Lake City,Utah and Helen Burton of Ida Grove;17 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchi ldren and one great-great-granddaughter. She preceded in death by two husbands;a brother and his wif e,Alton and Isabel Abbott;and a son-in-law,Leonard Schumann. Pallbears will be her grandsons;Larry and Llye Schumann and Larry Strong and La rry Bjorholm and James Simon Schmidt and Adrian Chesney.

Bruce Burton son of Forrest and Eileen Burton of Danbury,graduated from Maple Valley in 1965.He at tended and helped fight for the survival of Midwestern College in Denison.Today Burton is the Superintendent of North Central Community Schools in Manly,Iowa. He has been named "Superintendent of the Year" by the School Administrators of Iowa in copperation with the American Association of School Administrators. After graduating from Wayne State College in Wayne,Nebraska,he spent nine weeks in Lslamabad,Pakistan,learning a bout that culture and serving as a goodwill ambassador.Burton taught and coache d at a middle school for six years in Staton,Neb.,and at another for five years in North Platte.During that time he was also working on his Masters Degrees in Guidance Counseling at Chadron State College and administration,Special Educat ion and Elementary principal endorsements at the Universities of Nebraska in Li ncoln and Kearney.

Burton has been a boon to the Manly community since arriving there in 1993.He has served on their City Council and helped inmates pile sandbags d uring a city flood.He has been American Legion Commander twice and President of his Lions Club. "Mr. Burton's active engagement in the life of his church(Bethlehem Lutheran) should be noted as he and his wife have provided invaluable leadership and service ov er their years of membership," said one of North Central Guidance Counselors,Ke n Estes. "His warmth a nd genuine concern for the well being of others has fostered an attitude as wel l as a very real sense of felling of "family" at North Central," said Estes. Burton wants to give back,because he was helped and s upported so much as a child and youth by people in Danbury and Mapleton communi ties. "Bruce is a very stro ng leader,but he is very student oriented.Bruce visits the classroom whenever i t's possible.The students respect him,but they also enjoy his sence of himor.Br uce will have students come together and sing Happy Birthday to a fellow studen t,teacher,or other staff member.He is very visible to all students,and they kno w that he will listen to them when they have a concern,"said NC School board Pr esident Sheryl Thompson. Burton is said to have an Open door policy for students,encouraging them along with other members of the community to feel like they are a vital part of the s chool organization.
