James O. Crawford

James O Crawford:  Farmer, Garfield Township, Ida County.  Born 17 Feb 1828 Lanarkshire, Scotland. Son of Alexander Crawford and Mary Floyd, natives of Scotland.  Children of Alexander and Mary Crawford:

  2.  James O m. Janet Scott n/o Douglas Castle, Lanarkshire, Scotland, d/o James and Lilly (Muir) Scott.

James O Crawford was raised and educated in Scotland.  Worked many years in a Cotton Factory then in a boiler maker factory and ship building.  He became a member of the Glasgow police force.  He was appointed Inspector of Markets and common lodging houses.  He then joined the Manchester police force.  He later was appointed in the Scotch rural police force and oversaw a coal mining district.  

Emigrated to America in 1879, living near Cascade, Dubuque county, Iowa until 1882.  In 1882 he purchased land in Garfield Township and eventually owned 620 acres in Ida County.  

Married at the age of 28 to Janet Scott and had eight children:
