HUMBOLDT. Population, 1,809. A prosperous incorporated town, in county of same name, located on the Des Moines river and on the C. & N. W. Ry. (Dakotah Station), at the crossing of the M. & St. L. Ry. (depots miles apart), 106 miles n. of Des Moines and 18 n. of Fort Dodge. Dakotah, the county seat, joins the town on the east. Humboldt, now the chief town of the county, was settled in 1863 by a colony from New York under the supervision of Stephen H. Taft, the original proprietor of the town site. It has an excellent system of water works, the water being pumped from a large mineral spring in the vicinity; electric light, telephone exchange, Adventist, Baptist, Catholic, Christian Science, Congregational, Norwegian Lutheran, Methodist and Unitarian churches, 2 handsome school buildings, a Carnegie library, an opera house and the Humboldt College. The Northern Power Co. has constructed an extensive storage dam across the Des Moines river at this point, from which it will supply extensive light and electric power for Humboldt and all neighboring towns and cities. Has 3 banks and 3 weekly newspapers, Humboldt Independent, Humboldt Republican and the Humboldt Herald. The shipments consist of building stone, hay, grain, live stock, dairy supplies, poultry, butter, eggs, mineral waters, etc. Exp., Adams and Am. Tel. W. U. George Clevidence, postmaster.
