Scott, Bernice M. nee Baltes 1910 - 2001NEW HAMPTON - Bernice M. Scott, 91, New Hampton, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001 at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center from complications as a result of Alzheimers disease. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, New Hampton with Rev. Carl Schmitt celebrating the mass. The funeral pall will be placed on the casket by grandchildren, Laurie Tiemessen, Tara VonWaldon, Debbie Zabel and Cindy Scott. The offertory gifts will be presented by greatgrandchildren, Dan Tiemessen, James Zabel and Alyssa Franzen. Music for the service will be provided by Ann Bennett as organist and the St. Mary's Choir. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, New Hampton with grandchildren, Bob Scott, Mike Scott, John Scott, Todd Scott, Kurt Rindels, Becky Franzen and Kris Rindels as pallbearers. The Catholic Daughters of the Americas will be honorary pallbearers Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20 at Hugeback Funeral Home, New Hampton, where there will be a 4 p.m. Catholic Daughters of the Americas Rosary and a 7 p.m. Scripture Service. Bernice was born March 31, 1910 in rural Chickasaw County near Ionia, the daughter of John and Lucy Elizabeth (Kalen) Baltes. She received her education at St. Boniface School, Ionia and at the Deerfield Township rural country school. On July 25,1936 she married Ralph W. Scott at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Ionia. The couple farmed near New Hampton and Protivin. They also operated cafes in Fredericksburg and Fairbank. Bernice moved to New Hampton in 1972 where she lived until becoming a resident of the New Hampton Nursing ’ and Rehabilitation Center in 1995. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Rosary Society and a former District Officer for the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and volunteer leader for the Howard County 4-H programs in Protivin. Survivors include one daughter, Mary (Ken) Rindels, Charles City; four sons, Frank (Lila) Scott, Fredericksburg, Richard (Jackie) Scott, Nevada, Dan (Jean) Scott, New Hampton and Thomas R. Scott, Iowa City; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a brother, Dr. Bernard Baltes, Tulsa, OK; a sister, Lucille Muetz, W. Pomona, WI; three sisters-in-law, Adella Baltes, Apache Junction, AZ, Phyllis Baltes, Dade City, FL and Gerri Baltes, Denver, CO. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Ralph, in 1970; a daughter, Luanna Scott; three brothers, Louie, Norb and Joe Baltes; a sister, Rita Rosauer and a great-grandson. Memorials may be made to the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Alzheimers Safe Return Project or Hospice of North Iowa.
