TOUSSAINT, Vern John 1929 - 2001SUMNER - Vern J. Toussaint, 71, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001 at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo after a sudden illness. Funeral services were 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Sumner with Rev. John Purtell as Celebrant. Music was provided by Margaret Murphy as organist accompanying Karen Rochford as soloist. Interment was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Sumner with Ryan Toussaint, Tom Pattison, Randy Menuey, Chris Wurzer, Jim Jarchow and Ed Wheeler as.casket bearers. Visitation was from 4-8 .m. Monday, Aug. 27 at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home, Sumner. Vern John Toussaint was born Oct. 4,1929 in Jesup, the son of John and Irene (Hess) Toussaint. He attended Sumner schools. Vern served as a corporal with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was united in marriage with Barbara Jarchow on Jan. 27, 1953 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Sumner. Vern farmed west of Sumner and he hauled livestock for area farmers for many years. He retired from farming in 1981. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Sumner and had served on the Parish Council. He enjoyed woodworking, playing computer games, traveling and spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Barbara; seven children, Rodney (Kristy) Toussaint, Sumner, Debra (Gary) Griffith, Richmond, VA, Dan Toussaint, Iowa City, Cheryl (Gary) Sheldon, Dubuque, Michael Toussaint, Sumner, Cathy Toussaint, Cedar Rapids ana Joe (Elly) Toussaint, Sur^ner; eight grandchildren; ^two great-grandchildren and three sisters, Marcella Wheeler, Cedar Falls, Veryl Schares, New Hampton and Ramona Menuey, Fairbank. Preceding him in death were his parents.
