NATHEM, Jerome E. 1918 - 2001WATERLOO - Jerome E. Nathem, 82, formerly of the North Washington area, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001 at Raven wood Nursing and Rehab Center, Waterloo of natural causes. A Funeral Mass was held Monday, Jan. 8 at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Waterloo with the Rev. Justin Kane presiding. Annette Shabbits was the organist and accompanied the Sacred Heart Choir and those in attendance singing "Let There Be Peace", "Be Not Afraid", "Prayer of St. Francis", "Jesus Remember Me" arid "On Eagle's Wings". Lector was Maureen Haddeman and the-Eucharist minister was Jeanne Lutgen. Placing the pall and carrying the offertory gifts were Helen Nosbisch and Beverly Goebel, nieces of the deceased. A memorial tribute was given by Rose Ann McKinley, a niece. Burial was at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's Cemetery, North Washington with Pastor John Hemann officiating at the graveside services. Military rites were conducted by the New Hampton Veterans of Foreign Wars and the New Hampton American Legion. Pallbearers for their great-uncle were Robert Dreckman Jr., Roger Dreckman, Richard Dreckman, Raymond Dreckman, Donald Goebel and Ronald Goebel. Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 7 at the Hagarty - Waychaff - Grarup Funeral Service, Waterloo where there was a 4:30 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. scripture service. Visitation was also an hour before services on Monday at the church. Jerome E. Nathem was born Feb. 12,1918 in Ionia, the son of Peter and Gunda (Christoph-erson) Nathem. He received his education at St. Mary's Catholic School, North Washington, graduating in 1935. Mr. Nathem served in the US. Army during World War 11 in the Pacific Theater. He then worked at Rath Packing Co. for many years. After retirement he drove a Senior Citizen Transit Bus in Waterloo for a number of years. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends, playing cards and traveling. Survivors include a brother, Loren, Oelwein; a sister, Gertrude Hanson, Buffalo, MN and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; three brothers, Gerald, Bernard and Donald; a sister, Sophia Nosbisch and two siblings m infancy. Memorials may be directed to the church.
