CEDAR RAPIDS - Sylvester B. Leichtman, 98, formerly of New Hampton, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001 at Northbrook Manor Care Center, Cedar Rapids of natural causes.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 20 at Conway Funeral Home, New Harppton with Reverend Catherine Luck presiding.

Interment was in New Hampton Cemetery with Shawn and Richard Schulz, Joshua, Lon and Scott Ladwig and Brent Arslaner serving as casket bearers. Honorary bearers were Kenneth, Duane and Ronald Leichtman, Donald Nargang and Merlyn Gray.

Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19 at Conway funeral Home.

Sylvester Bryan Leichtman was born Dec. 20, 1902 near New Hampton, the son of Casper and Mary (Konzen) Leicntman. He attended the rural school and graduated from Sweeny Mechanics College, St., MO. He was married to Verna J. Eggleston on Aug. 25, 1925 at the Little Brown Church near Nashua. He lived on the same Century Farm from birth to Nov., 1995 when he moved to his daughters in Davenport. He later entered Northbrook Care Center, Cedar Rapids in 1996. Sylvester served on the local School Board in the late 1930s until the reorganization and closure of the rural school system. He helped write the bylaws of the Chickasaw County Swine Association and served as its president. He was a charter member of the County Beef Association and was a founder and member of the Jacksonville Historian Club. He was also active in the Republican Party and the Farm Bureau, a member of the Summer Rock Collecting Club, Farmers Co-op of New Hampton and REC, Cresco. He enjoyed collecting written historical events and was a supporter of the New Hampton Library and other organizations.

Survivors include one son, Robert R. Leichtman, MD, Baltimore, MD; one daughter, Bonnie Dean, Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren; six greatgrandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Verna, in 1983; two sisters, Elizabeth Hewitt and Edna Gray; two brothers, Henry and Clem and numerous nieces and nephews.
