HANSEN, Harlan L. 1920 - 2001Services held for Harlan Hansen Harlan L. Hansen, 80, of Woodbine, Iowa died Saturday, March 10, 2001 at St. Joseph Medical Center, Omaha, Neb. Harlan was born April 1, 1920 to Harrie and Laurine (Nelson) Hansen on a farm in Mitchell County, Iowa near St. Ansgar. He attended country school and then went to Osage High School. He entered the U.S. Army Air Force in April of 1942, and was discharged in November of 1945. After his discharge, he worked for the Cedar Valley Rural Electric, Mitchell County. Harlan was united in marriage to Elaine Byrd on March 29, 1943, at the Lutheran Church in LeRoy, Minn. In April of 1955, the couple moved to Woodbine, and Harlan started working for the Harrison County Rural Electric as the line superintendent and later as assistant manager. In 1978, Harlan and Elaine purchased the hardware store in Woodbine from the Clevelands. They operated the store until health problems caused them to sell the business to their son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Lisa. Harlan was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Woodbine, and served in many positions. He served on many boards over the years, including the Missouri River Front Development Board, Zoning, Landfill, Harrison County and Woodbine, Development, Woodbine Municipal Light Plant, Harrison County Red Cross, Republican Party County Chairman and helped found the Republican Chairman's Club. He had been a member of the Woodbine Kiwanis, and served as president. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lester Hansen, and his wife Shirley; and a sister, Hila Byrd. Survivors include his wife of nearly 58 years, Elaine of Woodbine; children, Kent Hansen and wife Renita of Portland, Oreg., Linda Westfall of San Diego, Cal., and Brad Hansen and wife Lisa of Greenville, S.C.; five granddaughters; brother, Galen Hansen and wife Lois of Mclntire, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Mildred Byrd of Osage and Pauline Roloff of Charles City, Iowa; brothers-in-law, Carroll Byrd of LeRoy, Minn, and Ernest Byrd and wife Jan of Waterloo, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
