Vergil Allen Wibben Sr., 74FREDERICKSBURG -- Vergil Allen Wibben Sr., 74, Fredericksburg, died Monday, Sept. 18 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo following a lengthy illness. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Brownsdale, MN with Pastor jerry Harris officiating. Vergil was born Sept. 28, 1925 at Austin, MN, the son of Hank Harms and Leota Ellen (Gross) Wibben. He received his education in Leroy, MN and joined the U.S. Army on May 25, 1944. Vergil received the Purple Heart for injuries suffered in the World War II Battle of the Bulge and also the Bronze Star. He was discharged May 22, 1946. On Jan. 28, 1948, Vergil married Carol Salisbury at Northwood and the couple made their home in Austin, MN. They were divorced in 1976. He was employed at Hormel in Austin, retiring after working there for 32 years. Vergil was a member of the North America Fishing Club and the North America Handyman Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and auto mechanics. Surviving are his children, Vergil Wibben Jr. and Randy Tindal, both of Brownsdale, MN, Mary Nystrom, Austin, MN, Leslie (Randy) Westendorf, Fredericksburg, Marty Wibben, Rochester, MN; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Darlene (B.J.) Lawrence, Billings, MT and Marcia Maunula, Spokane, WA. Preceding him in death were his parents; an infant son, Lyle; two granddaughters, Tina Richardson and Crystalina Garret; one sister, Velma.
