In the 1870s - 1880s many of the Quaker meetings
in Iowa moved from the un-programmed meeting to the pastoral system. If
you find someone called a minister before this date; they were not a
minister as we call them today. They had a gift of God to travel and
minister to the needs of their people, as Thomas Frazier, ca 1853 was.
Some had a gift to minister to the elderly, some to the imprisoned, some
to the Indians, some to those in need, some to teach and the list goes
on.
Our pastors are not ordained they are recorded and rarely use the prefix
Rev. They are called by God to minister to his people, just as others
are called by God to teach or visit the sick. One gift of God is no
greater than another.
