Scott township. The old 1870 map
shows rural school buildings in sections 3, 8, 12, 14, 16, 19, 28, 35. A
rural church was in section 16.
Wayne township. Rural schools are shown as located in
sections 3, 8, 10, 11, 13, 19, 27, 30. Churches are noted in sections 3,
10, 14 and 21. At the time, 1870, there were three postoffices in the
township, Wayne in section 3, Winona in section 14 and Swedesville in
section 28.
Jefferson township. Rural schools were mapped as in
sections 2, 5, 20, 25, 26, 32. Churches in sections 6 and 26. There was
no postoffice noted, but the community of Marshall, later to grow into
Wayland, is noted in the northeast corner of section 9.
Trenton township. Rural schools were shown in sections
8, 9, 21, 27, and rural churches in sections 24 and 25. No postoffices
seemed to be found in Trenton as of that early date.
Marion township. This township is shown with rural
schools in sections 6, 9, 15, 18, 29, 36. Churches are shown in sections
9, 15, 17, 24, 36. No village or postoffice is noted in the township.
Canaan township. School houses are shown in sections 8,
19, 22, 26, 32 and 33. No churches are noted nor any village. In section
4 is noted Cotton Grove postoffice.
New London township. School building noted in sections
4, 8, 12, 15, 17, 25, 28, 30. Only one rural church, and shown in
section 1.
Center township. Rural schools mapped were in sections
4, 7, 11, 13, 16, 23, 24, 26, 29. Rural churches were noted in sections
17 and 23.
Tippecanoe township. Rural school houses were in
sections 2, 4, 5, 24, 30, 35. Churches were noted in sections 5 and 28.
Salem township. Rural school houses were noted in
sections 1, 2, 3, 5, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 35. But only one rural church
building and in section 2.
Jackson township. Rural school houses were mapped as
follows, sections 1, 8, 11, 13, 20, 31, 33, 36. But one church is
mapped, and in section 31.
Baltimore township. Rural school buildings shown in
sections 3, 8, 22, 24, 30, 33, 35. The only church was in section 24.
In 1870 there were postoffices at Mt. Pleasant, Salem, New London,
Trenton, Marshall (Wayland), Lowell, Rome, Winfield, Wayne, Boyleston,
Cotton Grove, East Grove, Oakland Mills, Hillsboro and Winona.
