Few people in Henry county who do not know “The
Corner Drug Store”—where more than a generation ago they gathered to
hear the latest news and discuss questions, religious, political and
social, in which all were interested. For years J.W. Satterthwaite was
head man and presided with dignity and courtesy to all, special
privileges to none. Here he discussed politics until, himself he
graduated an accomplished politician out of the corner drug store into
the Mt. Pleasant post office.
Mr. Satterthwait had, for several years, a most a faithful and trusted
apprentice, Mr. J.H. Jericho. This young man, with his father, in 1889,
bought the stock and business to be known thereafter under the name and
style of J.H. Jericho & Co., at the same old corner stand.
A specialty of wall paper, paints, and glass was soon introduced, and
during the season for their use, the east end of their store is occupied
by the customers examining tints, colors and sizes to suit their tastes
and convenience. And not the least, that celebrated soda fountain in
front.
Who will ever forget the genial pleasant greetings of the senior member
of the firm who seemed to know and enjoy all the pleasant incidents of
his life and where troubles and cares have come to have forgotten them
utterly, or never allowing their remembrance to cloud his pleasant
smile.
And so, the Corner Drug store, by constant and close attention to the
business in hand and painstaking effort to please and satisfy every
demand has established and builded (sic) a fine business acknowledged to
be one of the best in town.
In 1901, Gus. B. Jericho, the eldest brother, bought the father’s
interest in the business, the firm now being composed of J.H. Jericho
and Gus. B. Jericho. This has proved a strong firm and popular with the
people generally, reliable in every way, attracting and receiving a
large trade and patronage. So, the Brazelton House corner drug store
continues to be one of the land marks of Mt. Pleasant.
