1935 - Brief Review of Events of Past Year

Jan 1 – Walter Martin’s cream truck was hit by a train at the Olds crossing.
Jan 2 – Bruno Richard Hauptmann went on trial for the murder and kidnapping of Baby Lindbergh.
Jan 2 – Lawrence Holtkamp was killed when the mule he was riding along highway 161 near Clay Grove was struck by a car driven by C.H. Hamilton.
Jan 3 – Seventy-fourth Congress convened.

Provide for Libraries

Jan 5 – Announcement was made that Miss Mary Crew had left an estate for a free public library at Salem.
Jan 10 – Announcement was made of provisions in Henry Nugen's will for a new public library at New London.
Jan 10 – Harold M Cooper, state liquor chairman, was indicted by a grand jury at Cedar Rapids on a charge of violation of the liquor control act.
Jan 10 – John King, oil station attendant near Salem, was taken for a ride by two men and robbed of about $15.

Excitement at Lowell

Jan 11 – Lowell was excited over suggestion that government might spend half a million dollars on dam in that vicinity.
Jan 16 – ‘The Jacob Ruppert’, flagship of the Byrd Antarctic expedition left Dunedin, New Zealand for Little America where it would be boarded by the Byrd party.
Jan 17 – Harry Stoner bought the local Chevrolet garage from Roy Fleenor.
Jan 21 – Temperature dropped to 10 below.
Jan 22 – Announcement was made that the Olds bank would pay a 17 percent dividend amounting to over $37,000.

Liner Sinks

Jan 25 – 47 persons were missing after the Ward liner ‘Mohawk’ sank.
Feb 4 – Delmar Smith of Ft. Madison was held up and robbed near Donnellson.
Feb 6 – Announcement was made of the consolidation of the Noble rural mail route with Number 6.
Feb 8 – Icy roads made travel hazardous.
Feb 10 – Elmer McKinley killed himself at the Charles E Long home.
Feb 11 – Wayne Trueblood and Arthur McDowell, Salem boys, were overcome by gas in a truck in northern Iowa.

Hauptmann Sentenced

Feb 14 – Bruno Richard Hauptmann was sentenced to die for the murder of the Lindbergh baby.
Feb 16 – New London defeated Mount Pleasant 21 to 19 in county cage final.

Married at Dunedin

Feb 18 – Miss Helen Gray, who had spent several months in New Zealand and Dr. T.C. Poulter, member of the Byrd Expedition, were married at Dunedin soon after the arrival of the Byrd party there from Little America.
Feb 21 – Henry County Savings bank announced a 10 per cent dividend on trust certificates, a dividend of more than $50,000.
Feb 24 – Michael Miller, 75, died suddenly at his home at Olds.

Cooper Fined

Feb 27 – State Liquor Chairman Harold N. Cooper was fined $1,000 for violation of the Iowa liquor act.
Feb 26 – H.M. Edwards, husband of the former Henrietta Budde, was killed when struck by a car near Cedar Rapids.
Feb 26 – Wesleyan defeated Parsons in final basketball game of season 28 to 22.
Feb 27 – Francis Buckley died of burns received while working in the chemical laboratory of the Iowa Soap company at Burlington.
Feb 27 – Thirty-one Royal Arch Mason chapters were represented at a meeting here.

Hillsboro Wins

March 2 – Hillsboro girls won the sectional basketball tournament for the third consecutive year.
March 4 – Bryan Houston was sentenced to 10 years in prison for perjury in the trial of Ed Manning of Coppock.
March 6 – Snow blanketed Henry County.
March 7 – ‘The News’ annual free cooking school opened.
March 15 – Rep Curtis McKinnon of New London was appointed to the state highway commission by Gov Herring.
March 16 – Hillsboro won second in state girls cage meet.
March 18 – Charles E. Long was sentenced to five years in prison on charge of aiding in the concealing of stolen corn.

Brakeman Killed

March 20 – William H. Risney, 48 of Oskaloosa, freight brakeman died at the Memorial hospital from injuries received the preceding night under the wheels of a freight at Wayland.
March 25 – Charles Heater was elected mayor over four other candidates.
March 29 – Mrs. W.B. Seeley died at the Seeley home here.
April 2 – Miss Mae Hoyne was elected superintendent of the Memorial hospital, succeeding Miss Blanche Lauger who had resigned.
April 9 – Ft. Madison and Keokuk were officially voted into the Little Six athletic league.

Dust Clouds

April 11 –Dust clouds swept across middlewestern states.
April 22 – Earthquake death toll in China was estimated at over 3,000.
April 24 – H.L. Shook was named president of the newly organized Junior Chamber of Commerce in Mount Pleasant.
April 26 – H.M. Cooper resigned from the state liquor commission.

Dr. Coons Resigns

May 4 – President James E. Coons resigned at Iowa Wesleyan.
May 4 – Low bid on the new Mount Pleasant post office construction was $43,850.
May 6 – Senator Cutting and three others were killed in an airplane crash.
May 8 – Chain letter craze was sweeping the nation.
May 12 – Arthur Zuhn, member of the Byrd Antarctic expedition returned to his home here.

Miss McGeer Honored

May 15 – Miss Margaret McGeer, teacher for 55 years – 39 of them in Mt. Pleasant – was honored at a reception at the high school. She was to retire at the end of the school year.
May 18 – Harold M. Cooper and E.J. Feuling, chairmen of the Democratic Central committee, were indicted by the Polk County grand jury.
May 19 – Dr. E. C. Allen died suddenly at Wayland.
May 21 – Jane Addams noted social worker died.
May 22 – House of Representatives overrode the president’s veto of the veterans bonus bill.

Senate Kills Bill

May 23 – Senate killed the Patman bonus bill by failure to override veto.
May 24 – Jury freed Stanton Rook in the Hussey torture robbery case.
May 27 – NRA was held unconstitutional by the U.S. supreme court.
May 31 – 20,000 were reported killed in an India earthquake.
June 1 – George Weyerhaueser, kidnapped nine-year-old Washington boy, was released by kidnappers.

Big Day at Wesleyan

June 3 – Thousands gathered on the Wesleyan campus for the visit of Admiral Byrd, Dr. T.C. Poulter, and Arthur Zuhn. Gov. Herring was among the guests.
June 5 – A directed verdict of not guilty was returned in the case of Harold M. Cooper at Des Moines.
June 5 – Patrick Griffin and Elmer Brewer were hanged at Ft. Madison in Iowa first double hanging.
June 28 – E.J. Feuling resigned as state Democratic Central committee chairman.
July 3 – A.D. Hayes, 71 died at New London.

Two Indicted

July 3 – Attorney General E.L. O’Connor and First Assistant Walter Maley were indicted by the Sioux City grand jury on a conspiracy charge.
July 5 – Announcement was made that all bids for construction of a new post office in Mt. Pleasant had been rejected.
July 8 – Dr. Harry Henry of Iowa City was elected president of Iowa Wesleyan College.
July 12 – The U.S. Army-National Geographic stratosphere attempt ended suddenly before it started when the giant balloon bursted.
July 12 – Miss Grace Trueblood and Arthur Morrow were injured in an auto accident south of Salem.
July 24 – Over 4 inches of rain had fallen in 52 hours.

Beauty Queen Named

July 26 – Miss Virginia Kiger was named “Miss Mt. Pleasant of 1936” in Temple theatre contest.
July 30 – Henry County fair opened.
July 31 – Lloyd Ford’s 4-H baby beef won the Henry County championship.
August 1 – Rev. I.C. Peterson was ordained at services at Baptist church.
August 8 – Top on hogs, $12.05.
August 12 – 1,000 attended the opening kittenball game here under lights.

Will Rogers, Wiley Post Killed

August 15 – Will Rogers and Wiley Post were killed in an airplane crash in Alaska.
August 16 – Max Alter drowned in Skunk River.
August 20 – Fire destroyed a large barn at the County Farm.
August 24 – A.W. Overly station agent at Olds took his life.
August 24 – The history of Salem was told in a pageant at the annual Old Settlers Day.

City Hall Project Approved

August 27 – The WPA had approved a city hall project for Mt. Pleasant.
Sept 3 – Sir Malcolm Campbell sped across the Salt Flat in Utah at more than 300 miles an hour.
Sept 3 – A hurricane in southern Florida took a heavy toll of lives.

Huey Long Killed

Sept 8 – Senator Huey P. Long of Louisiana was shot and fatally wounded at the Louisiana capital.
Sept 9 – 923 were enrolled in the local school system for a new record.
Sept 12 – The Mt. Pleasant Fall Festival opened on this date with a large attendance.
Sept 14 – The Ridinger instrumental quartet won the county amateur contest conducted at the Fall Festival.
Sept 15 – William Hughes, 3, son of Mr. and Mrs. T.R. Hughes of north of New London died of burns received when he fell into a bucket of hot water.
Sept 17 – State Liquor Chairman B.E. Manley was indicted by the Polk County grand jury on a charge of violating the Iowa liquor control act.

M.B. Huston Dies

Sept 19 – Milo B. Huston, assistant postmaster, in Mt. Pleasant, died suddenly.
Sept 24 – W.F. Coles, 75, died at his home here after an extended illness.
Sept 25 – New bid on the local post office project was $45,540.
Sept. 26 – Ray Murphy of Iowa was elected national commander of the American Legion.

Two Killed

Sept 28 – Charles W. Turner and Dale Glanzman of Mt. Pleasant and Bernard O’Brien of Ottumwa were fatally injured in an auto collision near Ottumwa.
Oct. 7 – A Chicago explosion took a heavy death toll.
Oct 7 – A transcontinental plane crashed in Wyoming killing 12.
Oct 18 – Rudy Latare was found not guilty on a charge of receiving stolen property.
Oct 18 – Rev. H.J. Wilkins died suddenly.
Oct. 20 – Sidney Smith, creator of Andy Gump, was killed in an auto accident.
Oct 25 – J.W. Smith, a Civil War veteran, died.

Dr Henry Installed

Oct 26 – Dr. Harry Henry was installed as president of Iowa Wesleyan
Oct 29 – Louis Curley of Lee County won the Henry-Lee-Des Moines County corn husking contest
Nov 6 – Billy Sunday, noted evangelist, died.
Nov 8 – Elmer Carlson of Iowa won the national corn husking contest.
Nov 11 – The Army-National Geographic balloon pierced the stratosphere to a new record.
Nov 10 – The LaCrew Iowa store was destroyed by fire.
Nov 15 – Four New London young people were injured when their car crashed into a freight car in Burlington.

Pacific Air Mail

Nov 22 – Giant Clipper mail plane reached Honolulu on first flight across Pacific with mail.
Nov 29 – Reginald Tracy was hanged for plotting murder of his wife.
Dec 10 – William Greenup was killed when a train struck the car in which he was riding at a local crossing.
Dec 10 – Mrs. Granger of Ft. Dodge left $5,000 to the Sarah Porter Beckwith P.E.O. home here.
Dec 14 – First snowfall of the season was a heavy one.
Dec 16 – Henry County Savings bank announced the payment of 10 per cent, or approximately $50,000 on trust certificates.
Dec 16 – Mrs. Will Theilengerdes and Mrs. Henry Coldeway of New London were hurt in a car collision near Middletown.
Chaulk Wilson was elected president of the Henry County Farm Bureau.

Lindberghs Leave

Dec 23 – Announcement was made that Col. and Mrs. Charles A. Lindbergh and their baby were on the way to England to establish their home.
Dec 22 – Mrs. D.C. Fett and Alexander Gordon were injured in auto accidents.
Dec 25 – Snow drifts blocked roads and upset the Christmas plans of many families.
Dec 26 – Official temperature, 11 degrees below zero.
Dec 29 – Jury dismissed after failing to reach verdict in case of Attorney E.L. O’Connor.
