At the age of 19 he enl in the war & remained during the war. He rec'd a gunshot wd in the breast & had his shoulder injured by the force of a cannon ball. This permanently disabled him. After the war he purchased a farm for $4 an acre. It was swampy & covered with tall prairie grass but a few yrs hard labor made it one of the best farms in the Co.
