Everett L. Mahler

Bagley

Army Technician Fifth Grade Everett L. Mahler, a medic, became one of the most decorated soldiers when he sacrificed his life to save others during World War II.

Mahler was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart, a Silver Star and the Distinguished Service Cross for rendering emergency first aid treatment to wounded soldiers during "extremely heavy and prolonged enemy shell fire," according to a website listing of the presidential awarding of the Distinguished Service Cross.

Mahler, 23, "left a covered position voluntarily, and with utter disregard for his own safety, rendered emergency first aid treatment to wounded soldiers. During this action, Technician Fifth Grade Mahler was mortally wounded but his heroic actions saved the lives of several fellow soldiers."

Mahler was serving in Tunisia in April 1943 with the Army Medical Detachment, 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division when he died April 30, 1943.

He was from Bagley and had enlisted in Guthrie County.
