Benton, from Guthrie County, enlisted in the Army Air Forces. He served with the 305th Bomber Group, Heavy, 366 Bomber Squadron. He is buried or memorialized at Tablets of the Missing at the Cambridge American Cemetery in Cambridge, England after he was declared dead Feb 3, 1945. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
Benton was a radio operator in a B-17-G that plunged into the North Sea after suffering heavy flak damage during a bombing mission over Germany. Wonded three times in his leg, he dressed his own wound, but sustained additional injuries and succumbed to his wounds. His body was lost at sea, wrote Tom Jennings.
