JOHN GARVEY IN MEMORIAM
Born November 12, 1888 - Died at Great Lakes
Training Station March 14, 1918.
John Garvey died at the Great Lakes Training
Station, Chicago, Thursday, March 14, after an illness of eight days of
pneumonia. His mother was
with him when he passed away and accompanied the remains to the family
home at Oran. He enlisted
last October and would have sailed for France in April.
The funeral was held in the Immaculate Conception
church Monday, 10 a.m. Rev. J. Halpin read the mass and delivered a
fine sermon on patriotism, and his address will long be remembered by
all who heard him. He has
always taken an active part in all patriotic movements.
the large church was filled and many could not gain admittance.
The altar rail and gallery were appropriately decorated with
flags and bunting.
The G.A.R., W.R.C., Red Cross Directors, Camp Fire
Girls, Mayor and City Council all attended in a body.
Business was suspended and both schools attended the service.
The remains were laid to rest in the Catholic
cemetery. After the
religious ceremony at the grave, the W.R.C. burial ritual was read.
John Garvey was born November 12, 1888, at the
family home 6 1/2 miles northwest of town and is survived by his
father, mother, four sisters and three brothers.
James Garvey is at Camp Dodge but all were present at the
