JOHN O. WEAVER,
eye, ear, nose and throat specialist at Shenandoah, is a
native of Iowa, and took up private practice after a long and
thorough training in medical college and hospital work.
Doctor Weaver was born at Spirit Lake, Iowa, May 18, 1887.
His parents, I. N. and Amy (Gilbert) Weaver, came to Iowa in
1872, and were substantial farmers, at first in Audubon County
and later in Clay County, Iowa. Both died in Coon Rapids. His
father was born in Ohio, son of William Weaver, a native of
Montpelier, that state. The Weaver family came from Germany in
the 1700s. John Weaver was born in Pennsylvania in 1725 and
had sons named Joseph, George, Abraham, Daniel and John. Mrs.
Amy (Gilbert) Weaver was a native of Kentucky where her
father, John Gilbert, spent his active life as a plantation
and slave owner. Doctor Weaver's parents were Methodists, his
mother being very active in her church affiliations. His
father was a Republican. Of the nine children eight are
living, Doctor Weaver being the seventh in age.
Doctor
Weaver attended school at Coon Rapids, and in 1907 entered the
halls of the University of Iowa at Iowa City. He was a student
there for seven years, combining his general literary and
scientific and medical courses. The Bachelor of Science degree
was conferred upon him in 1913 and he graduated M.D. in 1914.
Doctor Weaver had an extensive experience as an interne in the
Iowa Hospital at Iowa City and in 1916 located at Shenandoah.
He was the first physician of Shenandoah to confine his work
to the special field of eye, ear, nose and throat. Doctor
Weaver has attended many hospital clinics. In September, 1918,
he joined the colors, being in training at the Medical
Officers Training School at Fort Riley, Kansas, and saw
service several months in France during the World war. He
ranked as a first lieutenant and received his honorable
discharge July 11, 1919.
Doctor Weaver is a member of
the Page County, Iowa State and American Medical Associations,
the Sioux Valley Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Academy, the Omaha
and Council Bluffs Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Society, and the
American Academy of Oto-Laryngology.
He married in 1916
Miss Loraine Vollertsen, who was born at Charter Oak, Iowa,
and was educated in the high school at Battle Creek, Iowa, and
in Iowa State College at Ames. They have two children, Julia,
born in 1920, and John, born in 1923. Doctor Weaver is a
trustee of the Presbyterian Church and his wife devotes much
time to church work. He is a Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner
and a Republican in politics.
