War of 1812

Hildreth, Oznia, (aka Ozni Hildreth & Oznus Hildreth) - Private in Capt. Frederick Gitman's company of New York Militia, 5th Regiment, 5th Brigade, Col. Calvin Riche and Col. Dolson. He entered the service in August 24, 1812, at Manheim, Montgomery co. (now Herkimer co.) and was discharged on February 24, 1813, at Sacket's Harbor, Jefferson County, New York (or Johnstown, Montgomery County, NY), for total service of 185 days. He served at Sacket's Harbor and Cape Vincent. He stated that he was the same Ozni Hildreth who was a corporal in Capt. Garey's (Carey?) company in the NY Regiment of Militia commanded by Col. Bellenger. (source: Wikitree, unknown author).

04/01/1857 - Received for service in Captain Getman's Company, New York Militia, War of 1812; Warrant No. 5578 for 80 acres in Section 1, Twp 103N, Range 4W, Houston co. MN. Ozni assigned this land to Phineas Wilcox. (Bounty Land Warrant Vol. 124, pg 302)

Pension:
Original - #25561, cert. #15775 - gives wife's name as Jane Stark, married 3/4/1817 in Oppenheim, NY

Census:
1870 U.S. census, Butler twp., Butler co. IA - Ozni Hildreth, age 77 is enumerated in the household of Elijah & Lois Sperry. Lois is possibly his daughter.

Biographical:
He was born July 12, 1794 in New York. He married Jane Stark on March 4, 1817 in NY. He died November 29, 1877 and is buried in the Old Chapin cemetery. Gravestone


War of 1812

Horton, Jehiel W. - Ptv. Captain's J. Gale, Thomas King & J.P.C. Sampson's companies, NY Militia. Van Dalfsen's Regiment and Hardenbergh's Regiment. Enlisted August 18, 1814. Discharged December 4, 1814. Also served Capt. Ball's company, NY militia, fall of 1813.

Bounty land:
09/10/1860 - Received for service in Captain King's Co., New York Militia, War of 1812; Warrant No. 41288 for 160 acres in Section 27, Twp 83N, Range 36W, Carroll co. IA. Jehiel assigned this land to Joseph F. Muzzy. (Bounty Land Warrant Vol. 468, pg 28)

Census:
- 1856 Iowa State census, Olive twp., Clinton co. IA; Jehiel (age 65, b. N.Y.) his wife Anna (age 60, b. N.Y.)
- unable to follow him on subsequent census records

Vitals:
Married to Anna Hammond, December 12, 1816 in Orange co. NY. She removed to New Sharon, Mahaska co. Iowa in 1878.
He died February 9, 1873 and is buried in the Hampton cemetery.

Jones, Jabish - Private, Captain Morgan's Company, 2nd Regiment, Virginia Militia.

08/01/1854 - Received for service, Warrant No. 20010 for 80 acres in section 13, Perry twp. Buchanan co. Iowa. (Bounty Land Warrant Vol. 802, pg 279)
12/01/1859 - Received for service, Warrant No. 11373 for 80 acres in section 35, Inham twp. Franklin co. Jabish assigned this land to William E. Ball. (Bounty Land Warrant Vol. 30, pg 217)

Census:
- 1860 U.S. census, Geneva twp., Franklin co., IA - Jabish (age 68), his wife Mary (age 67), and sons Thomas & Wm. H.
- 1870 U.S. census, Richland twp., Mahaska co., IA - Jabish (age 77) is enumerated in the household of Thomas & Rachel Jones and their children.
- 1880 U.S. census, Reeve twp., Franklin co., IA - widower, age 87, living in the John Butterfield household

Pension:
His obituary says he was receiving a pension.

Biographical:
Born in West Virginia Nov. 16, 1792. Married to Mary Lewellen on July 12, 1812 in W. Virginia. He and Mary came to Geneva twp. Franklin co. in 1854. Mary died August 20, 1862. Jabish died February 8, 1882. They are buried in Four Mile Grove cemetery. Gravestone * Obituary

Lathrop, Zabdial, (aka Zebulon Lathrop or Zebadiah Lathrop) - Private, Captain Frederick Bailey's company, Pennsylvania militia; Montgomery's Regiment

Bounty land:
12/01/1854 - Received for service in Capt. Bailey's co. PA Militia, War of 1812, Warrant No. 5852 for 40 acres in Iowa co., Wisconsin, Section 30, Twp 8N, Range 1E. Zebulon then assigned the land to Lafayette G. Dimock. (Bounty Land Warrant Vol. 581, pg 237)
02/17/1885 - Granted 120 acres, Section 21, Twp 104N, Range 71W, Brule co., South Dakota, bounty land granted to Marie Lathrop, widow of Zabdial Lathrop alias Zebulon Lathrop, of Capt. Frederick Bailey's co. Pennsylvania militia, War of 1812. Maria then assigned the land to John F. Stearns. (Bounty Land Warrant Vol. 562, pg 142)

Census:
-1850 U.S. census, Rush twp., Susquehanna co. Pennsylvania enumerated Z.N. Lathrop (age 58), wife Maria (age 47)
- 1856 Iowa State census, Washington twp., Franklin county, Iowa enumerated Zabadil Lathrop (age 66), wife Mariah (age 53) and children Leonard (age 26) and Sarah J. (age 14). Birthplace of Zabadil was Connecticut; for Maria, Vermont and both children born in Pennsylvania.
- 1860 U.S. census, Washington twp., Franklin county enumerated Zabdial, age 70 with his wife & the 2 children.

Maria Lathrop, Original widow pension #14004; widow pension, certificate #32540

Biographical:
Zabdiel was born June 2, 1791 in Connecticut. He died September 28, 1864. Maria died November 30, 1885. They are buried in the Hampton cemetery. Gravestone


War of 1812

Miner, Andrew - Corporal, Captain Amasa Parker's Company Detached Militia, from the County of Delaware in the State of New York. Entered service Sept. 8, 1814 at Delhi, NY. Honorably dis/charged Nov. 28, 1814 at New York City. Previous to this service, he had belonged to an Independent Company of Militia of Delaware co. NY, which was disorganized and a new company (Capt. Parker's Co.) formed.

Bounty land:
03/01/1855 - Received for service in Capt. Parker's Co., NY militia, War of 1812. Warrant No. 32267 for 40 acres in Dallas co. Iowa. NE quarter of the SE quarter of Section 26, Twp 79N, Range 29W. Andrew then assigned the land to Thomas Ward. (Bounty Land Warrant Vol. 867, pg 78)
04/01/1861 - Received for service in Capt. Parker's Co., NY militia, War of 1812. Warrant No. 39506 for 125.46 acres in Eau Claire co., WI. Andrew assigned the warrant to George D. Coon, who assigned it to Joseph Harris, who assigned it to Henry H. Wood. (Bounty Land Warrant Vol. 477, pg 153)

1850 U.S. census, Peoria co., IL - Andrew Miner, age 56, b. N.Y. and Fanny Miner, age 56, b. N.Y. living in the Jno. & Nancy J. Mouts household
1870 U.S. census, Blairstown, Leroy twp., Benton co. IA - Andrew Miner, age 76, b. N.Y. and Fanny Miner, age 75, b. Conn.

Certificate #3001, commenced Feb. 14, 1871 in the amount of $8/mo.

Biographical:
Andrew was born in Delaware co., New York in 1794. He married Fanny Dart (1795-1871). He died January 7, 1880 of Old age and Lung Fever (consumption), and is buried in the Hampton cemetery. Gravestone


War of 1812

Rice, Gideon - Private, Howell's 39th Regiment, New York Militia (this needs to be confirmed)

Census:
1840 Illinois State census, Cook co., (?Thornton) - Gideon Rice, head of household; in household are 2 males between age 20 & 30 and 1 male aged between 50 & 60; all are engaged in agriculture
1850 U.S. census, Orland twp., Cook co. IL - Gideon Rice, age 80, (birthplace illegible); living in the household of Manchester Rice, age 26. Several households away is the family of Gideon's son Amon.
1860 U.S. census, Hampton, Washington twp., Franklin co. IA - Gideon Rice, age 78, born N.Y., farm laborer; living in household of Amon Rice.

Notes: Gideon's age given in the census records are in conflict and should be verified. Indexed records on both ancestry.com and familysearch.org give birthplace on the 1850 as Ireland, which is questionable, and if true, must be a different Gideon Rice.

Pension: no pension found

Biographical:
Gideon was born in either New York or Massachusetts depending on the record. He died February 15, 1863, and is buried in the Hampton cemetery. Gravestone


Black Hawk War

Butterfield, Benjamin - Sergeant, Capt. Holder Sisson's company, Illinois Militia. Butterfield & his family were among the area settlers who took shelter in the blockhouse built by Capt. Sisson near Fort Dearborn, Illinois. The company was raised to defend the settlers on the prairie and in defense of the blockhouse.

Bounty land:
12/05/1861, received for service, Warrant No. 86,286 for 160 acres, in favor of Benjamin Butterfield, Sgt., Capt. Sisson's Co., IL Militia, Blackhawk War. Located upon the SE quarter of Sect. 17, Twp. 6, Range 14, Jackson co., Kansas. Butterfield then assigned the land to Joshus B. Sympson. (Bounty Land Warrant, Vol 438, pg 273)

Census:
- 1856 Iowa State census, Reeve twp., Franklin co. enumerated Benjamin Butterfield, age 63; his wife Elizabeth, age 56; and children John S. (21y), Martha M. (19y) & E.S. (16y).
- 1860 U.S. census, Reeve twp., Franklin co. enumerated Benjamin Butterfield, age 65
- 1870 U.S. census, Reeve twp., Franklin co. enumerated B. Butterfield, age 75 and Elizabeth, age 69.

Pension:
None located

Biographical:
Benjamin was born June 11, 1794 in Washington co., New York. He married twice, first to Martha Morrison and second to Elizabeth Scott. In 1834, after the Sauk & Illini were defeated in the Blackhawk War by the U.S. Cavalry, the Butterfield family removed from Fort Dearborn to a farm south of Chicago. In 1854 they removed to Franklin county. He died April 28, 1878 and is buried in the Maynes Grove cemetery. Gravestone. Obituary
