Charles City
1912-1913

Population. 5,832. An incorporated citylocated on Cedar River, which urnishes power,
and on the Ill. Central R. R. and C., M. & St. P. Ry. (depots 1/2 mile apart), in Floyd County,
of which it is the judicial seat, 27 miles e. of Mason City, and 152 n. e. of Des Moines.
Has churches of the Baptist, Catholic, Christian, Congregational, Episcopal, Evangelical
and United Evangelical denominations, and a Carnegie Free Library. The Charles City College is modern
in every respect and with the public and high schols afford excellent educational facilties.
The city is solidly built up, has broad and well paved streets and avenues and is well drained.
It is lighted by electricity, has water works, fire department, a handsomely appointed opera
house with a seating capacity of 1,000, 4 banks, 2 daily newspapers, the Press and Intelligencer,
and 3 weeklies, Advocate-Herald, Famillen Freund and Intelligencer. Among its other important
interests are carriage and wagon works, sash, door and blind factory, flour and feed mills, gasoline engine
plant, tank factory, foundry, creameries, furniture factory, etc. One of the leading enterprises
is the nursery business, over $100,000 worth of fruit trees and ornamental shrubbery being shipped yearly.
