SHAFFER DRUM CORPS TO PLAY AT
LANSING
Shaffer’s Drum Corps has been secured to
play two days, Friday and Saturday June 19 and 20, at the Lasing celebration of the opening
of the new bridge across the Mississippi river.
The drum corps is named in honor of John D.
Shaffer, snare drummer, who is one of the original corps organized
nearly sixty years ago. The other member of the original corps is
Robert Peters, fifer. Marian Baldwin, fifer, of Hazelton, joined the
corps three years later. M. A. Klingman, bass drummer, of Wadena,
and Dr. Roy F. DeSart, snare drummer, and secretary, are recent
additions to the corps.
The great aim of the corps is to perpetuate
the tunes and the drum beats of the Civil War period, and in all
probability this is the only corps that furnish some of the tunes
with the most intricate of drum beats, known as the double drag.
We know that this corps will put much pep in
the Lansing celebration.
