MARRIED 50 YEARS.
MR. AND MRS. R. [A] W. PETERS CELEBRATE
THE EVENT AT THEIR HOME IN ILLYRIA
Sunday October 18, 1903, at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Peters, in Illyria township, a company of
people assembled to commemorate an event which happened fifty years
before. This event was marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Peters which
occurred in an eastern state in the year 1853, the ceremony being
preformed by Squire Underwood. Soon after the couple came to Iowa
and settled in Illyria township, where they engaged in farming.
The friends and neighbors of the couple did not
thing it wise to allow the golden anniversary to pass unheeded and
as a consequence about fifty gathered to help make the occasion one
long to be remembered. Upon the arrival of the self invited party,
many and sincere were the wishes for long life and prosperity, while
the worthy couple were congratulated on the celebration of their
anniversary. Mr. Peters was presented with a gold headed cane, while
a pair of gold bowed spectacles was bestowed upon his worthy
helpmate, as a partial token of the high esteem in which they are
regarded by the many who had gathered to pay them tribute. after the
company had arranged affairs to suit themselves they began to enjoy
the situation as only a lot of cherry, prosperous people can; social
conversation was indulged in and all want well. When dinner was
announced those present sit down to a repast which spoke volumes in
praise of the good housewives who had prepared the dishes. At a
reasonable hour all returned home wishing the couple many returns of
their wedding anniversary and a happy life as they journey toward
their golden sunset.
