France much Better Than England -- |
Somewhere in France, Oct. 24
My Dear Uncle and all.-- |
I received your letter today and was surely glad to hear from
you, your letter was very interesting to me, I must say! You have no
idea what a letter means to us boys here in France. We surely are
anxious to get the home news. I am feeling fine and dandy, and hope
that you folks are all the same, and I surely hope that Eleanor got
well, so she could start in to college right from the beginning. I
am sure she would hate to miss school. Well I see where Iowa has
gone over the top with her Liberty Loan, Good for her! The old U,S,
is sure there with the goods. I am glad to hear that you are ready
to go any time they call on you, but I don't think that they will
need you. I would like to see you drill, I bet you would make some
soldier.
I was in England and now am in France, and I like it
much the best in France. We are working everyday, rain or shine, so
you see I haven't much time to write, but I will do the best I can.
We have supper at 6 o'clock and then we are done for the day, but we
always find something to do, either wash a few clothes, or write a
letter and shave three times a week, and so on, you see we have to
have something to do to keep us out of mischief.
We got
torpedoed on our way over but no lives where lost. It was some great
experience, but can't say I liked it one bit. Well I haven't time to
write any more tonight, so will bring this to a close, and write you
again in a short time. Write often if you have time.
Best
Wishes to all. I remain your Nephew,
WM.M. PAPE |
