Leon Reporter Leon, Decatur County, Iowa Thursday, January 18, 1917, Page 1 TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (1892) _________ Items Taken from the Files of The Reporter Published a Quarter of A Century Ago. _________ Tuesday evening about seven o'clock word was brought up town that Timothy Moore had killed his wife at their home down in Grassy Hollow near the Q depot. Andrew Bright and Grant Dorsey called at the Moore home to see him about doing some work, and getting no response one of them looked in the window, and saw Moore who finally came and unbolted the door, and said he was just thinking of going out and arousing some of the neighbors as some one had been there and hurt his wife. The woman was lying in a pool of blood on the floor with several frightful gashes on her head and one ear almost cut off. Physicians were summoned, and Wednesday morning she regained consciousness and said her husband had attacked her with an axe when she told him she was going to leave him. Moore was arrested by marshal Henry Bright and placed in jail. He is an old man 74 years of age, and his wife is only 23 years old. They were married in Morgan township. The couple had quarreled frequently since they lived in Leon. The old man insisted he was innocent and said he left the house about 6 o'clock and started up town but met a man who told him all the stores were closed and he returned home to find his wife lying on the floor, and told a story about two tramps being at his house that afternoon, and he believed they were the ones who did the deed. Leon Reporter Leon, Decatur County, Iowa Thursday, January 9, 1896* MR. TIMOTHY MOORE, a well remembered character of southeast Decatur County in former years, arrived Wednesday afternoon direct from the Fort Madison Penitentiary, where he had served under a sentence of five years from Decatur County, for an attempt to murder his wife by chopping her head off with an axe, while they resided in Leon. He had received the benefit of discount for good behavior while in the pen and had only served about three and a half years. He is about 86 years of age and returns looking hale and hearty and better dressed than he was ever known to be before his incarceration. His wife, who was formerly SUSIE ADAIR, a well-known character of this vicinity, now lives at Trenton, Mo., and is reported to have married a time or two without the formalities of divorce, but "Old TIMOTHY" is said to have no inclination to pose as an Enoch Arden on that account. He had been a pensioner for many years, and the $l2 per month he received has more than provided him with extra comforts during his stay in prison, leaving him a snug little balance to secure him from future want. --Lineville Tribune.
