The Lamoni Chronicle October 21, 1909 Fire Alarm. On Friday forenoon about ten o'clock the fire alarm bell rang out, when it was soon learned that the home of Mrs. Minnie Nicholson was on fire. The fire was first seen by a neighbor from across the street, when the alarm was given. It so happened that C. U. Grenawalt and Ed Weedmark were in the immediate neighborhood delivering a stove and with alacrity got to work with pails and water, and ere the hose cart arrived they had the fire under control. That morning the furnace had been started for the first time this season, and it is supposed that a spark from the chimney ignited the shingles; about six feet square of which were destroyed. A strong wind was blowing at the time, and in a few moments the whole roof would have been ablaze. Copied by Stacey McDowell Dietiker April 19, 2003 |
