Grand River, Iowa, March 3rd.
Editor Reporter -- Today I got to figuring the cost and expense of my auto, and it startled me as it probably will you and your readers.

Eight years ago I bought my first "flivver." Since then I have bought two more. I traded the first one on the second and the second on the third, making the three cost me $905.00 cash. Figuring 4,000 miles per year, (by the speedometer) as an average, makes 32,000 miles. 20 miles to the gallon has used l,600 gallons of gas, at 20 cents per gallon, cost me $320.00. A quart of oil each l00 miles has used 320 quarts, at 20 cents per quart, cost $64.00.

First cost, oil and gas reach the total of $l,289.00. Divided into eight years makes $l6l.00 per year, and this divided into 365 days made it cost me 44 cents per day.

This does not include tires, repairs nor garage bills. I believe this is a fair average of what each joy machine costs the Decatur County owner. Yours Truly,
LYMAN ANDREW.

Leon had a regular epidemic of fires the latter part of last week, there being five fires within four days, but only two of them amounted to much.

The first fire was at the home of ELVA BAKER, two blocks west of the square last Thursday morning, when a fire started from unknown cause and gained such headway that practically everything in the room was ruined either by fire, smoke or water, including the piano. The house was damaged perhaps $800, and this loss was fully insured, but MR. BAKER will lose probably $750 on contents with insurance of only $500.

Then at noon on Friday a small fire was discovered on the roof of the home of JOHN BELL, but the fire boys made quick work of it and the damage was slight.

Shortly after one o'clock the same day a second alarm took the fire company to the home of JESSE ADAIR, where fire had started in a partition, but here also the damage was slight.

Saturday night about 12:30, the residence of BOB AKES on South Main Street, south of the depot was totally destroyed. MR. and MRS. AKES have been staying most of the time with his mother for some time, but were at the house every day. BOB was there Saturday forenoon, and had a fire in the kitchen, but there had been no fire at all in the room when discovered by neighbors, and only a part of the contents of the room were saved. MR. AKES had insurance of $1,000 on the house and $500 on the contents. This is the second time they have lost their home by fire, the old Givens place just south of the Christian Church being burned a few years ago, and at that time also MR. and MRS. AKES were away from home.

Sunday noon LEW VAN WERDEN was walking out in his yard when he noticed a small fire on the roof of his house, and the alarm was given, but it was extinguished quickly, a few shingles being burned. They had been burning cartons in the furnace and a piece fell on the roof.

Editor Reporter -- We had a very nice winter only in January it was two weeks that the cold was very severe. It was 46 below zero, but it is such a dry cold people don't seem to stop work for the cold. We have had very little snow out here this winter, although the ground has been covered nearly all winter with light snows, but our mail carrier has not missed a day this winter, and he only goes twice a week, on Tuesday and Friday, and he had one hundred miles to drive, so you know the roads have been passable all winter. I must tell you we only live 75 miles from the Teapot Dome and it is surely making a lot of talk. Even the Republicans are going back on their politics. They don't know who to put in office any more.

Will give you the prices of what we raise out here. I sent 28 dozen eggs to town and got l5 cents a dozen; wheat is 70 cents; corn one dollar; potatoes $2.00 per hundred pounds. We are still holding our wheat for one dollar a bushel. There are people coming out here from Osceola, Iowa, to rent. Mr. Reeves' brother came out here and rented. His brother lives west of us on his own farm. He located here when we did. MR. BOAN and I just love to live out here, only we are getting pretty old. He only weighs l9l and feels pretty well. Give my regards to all of my old Decatur County friends.

Yours Truly,
MRS. SARAH F. BOAN.
