Lamoni, Iowa July 13, 1905 Ed ALBAUGH was quite severely injured about ten o'clock on the 4th of July, by the explosion of a cannon fire cracker. He had arranged half a dozen crackers in a row and was trying to ignite them all at once when one exploded prematurely within eighteen inches of his face. His eyes and face were filled with cinders and mud by the force of the explosion. His hat was blown off his head and he stood in a stooping posture with his hands covering his face for a few minutes when he was assisted to Dr. Greenman's office. The doctor extracted half a dozen cinders out of the cornea of the right eyeball and three out of the left and tired himself out picking mud and cinders which had penetrated the flesh. He was able to go home about one o'clock p.m. and yesterday morning was doing as well as could be expected. It was a narrow escape from total blindness. - Decatur County Journal Copied by Stacey McDowell Dietiker June 28, 2003 |
The Lamoni Chronicle Lamoni, Iowa July 27, 1905 FAREWELL PARTY - About sixty guests assembled at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. SCOTT, Wednesday evening of last week for a farewell party. Mr. SCOTT and family were to go to St. Joseph the next morning to live, so the friends came to say farewell. What did it matter if the house was void of furniture! The lawn was spacious, cool and inviting. And what if the friends were so soon to part! They would once more give themselves over to a good, old-fashioned time. And they had it. And in the midst of the frolic and fun, the chattering and if we dare say it, gossip, Mayor B. M. RUSSELL arose and in a few well chosen words, gave, on behalf of the company, the farewell address. This was responded to, with feeling, by Mr. SCOTT; he said that as his home in Lamoni had always been open to one and all, so would it be in St. Joseph. He also thanked the party for their kindness and friendship. Mr. W. A. HOPKINS addressed the company briefly. After a two course luncheon, salads, pickles, and sandwiches, and ice cream and cake, the party said "Good bye." Copied by Stacey McDowell Dietiker June 28, 2003 |
