The Leon Reporter Leon, Decatur County, Iowa Thursday, August 20, 1908, Page 1 Davis City Reunion A Success. _________ The Davis City reunion held last week as usual attracted a big crown not withstanding the rainy weather which interfered somewhat with the attendance, but on Thursday there was an enormous crowd there and all seemed to have a good time. The usual number of stands and paid shows were there, and they also had several good free attractions on the platform. Good speakers were present each day to address the people and as usual the ball games were well attended. Wednesday afternoon Lamoni defeated Pleasanton by a score of 8 to 2. Thursday morning a pick-up team from Leon was defeated by Lamoni by a score of 11 to 4, and in the afternoon the regular Leon team defeated Davis City in a hot game by a score of 2 to 1. Friday afternoon Chariton and Lamoni played, the first game being won by Chariton with a score of 6 to 4, and as each team had won two games this season, a second game was played to decide between them, but after playing eight innings the game was called on account of darkness with the score a tie, 2 to 2. There is something which attracts the people to Davis City whenever they have a reunion and nearly everybody from Leon went down. Transcription by Sharon R. Becker, December of 2016

The Leon Reporter Leon, Decatur County, Iowa Thursday, August 20, 1908, Page 1 The Garden Grove Reunion. _________ The Garden Grove reunion will be held on Thursday and Friday of this week, Thursday being Taft day and Friday being Bryan day. The speaker for Thrusday is W. M. Jackson, of Bedford, and on Friday Hon. V. R. McGinnis of this city. On Thursday Rev. Joe Goodsell is platform manager and C. M. Akes marshal, and on Friday Hugh Buffum is platform manager and B. D. Barger marshal. They have secured a number of good free attractions and there will be base ball games each day. NOTE: Taft and Bryan day refers to the 1908 U.S. presidential election between William Howard Taft (R) and William Jennings Bryan (D) when incumbent President Theodore Roosevelt honored a promise to not seek a third term. The Leon Reporter Leon, Decatur County, Iowa Thursday, August 20, 1908, Page 1 More Improvements at the Poultry Plant. _________ President W.T. S. White, of Chicago and secretary W.W. Richardson, of Clarinda, of the Clarinda Poultry, Butter & Egg Co., were in Leon last Thursday inspecting the big plant which the company owns in this city, and while here ordered some improvements at the big plant, and a force of men are now at work building a three-story building, 40x40 feet, which will be used for chicken pens in which to keep the live poultry when it comes in such quantities that it cannot be dressed at once. During the past two years many cars of live poultry have been shipped from the plant here to Creston and Clarinda on account of not having room to handle them and they desire to prevent this by building additional pens. The new building is entirely separate from the main building. The feeding station was opened last week and about fifteen thousand chickens are on feed now. As soon as the first feeding is ready to be dressed, which will be in about a week or ten days, things will liven up and a number of additional men will be put at work. Transcription by Sharon R. The Leon Reporter Leon, Decatur County, Iowa Thursday, August 20, 1908, Page 1 Building Collapsed. ___________ Last Friday, just before noon, the frame building standing in the street just south of the Exchange National Bank, which was moved there to make room for Penniwell's new brick block, collapsed in a heap, and Frank Pickering, who was working with J. F. Penniwell in demolishing the building, was caught when the building fell, being buried under the debris and for a few minutes it was thought he had been killed, but he miraculously escaped with some severe bruises. Mr. Penniwell had taken out the glass front and torn the roof off and as the building was pretty old, it was weak and a gust of wind made it topple over. Mr. Pickering was working inside the building, being up on a ladder taking off ceiling when he noticed the building shaking and although he jumped from the ladder and tried to reach the door he could not escape. He had presence of mind to throw himself between the joists as the building fell and the lath broke from the force of the timbers. He was knocked flat on the floor and the roof and part of one side was on top of him. Mr. Penniwell was just outside the building and he rushed to his assistance being joined by others and the injured man was pulled out of the wreckage. All the wind had been knocked out of him and he was stunned, but was able to walk home and returned to work in the afternoon but his body is black and blue in large spots. All the glass taken from the front had been placed inside the building so it would not be broken and this was all crushed. The damage aside from the broken glass was merely nominal. The Leon Reporter Leon, Decatur County, Iowa Thursday, August 20, 1908, Page 1 W.C.T.U. Convention ___________ The eleventh annual convention of the W.C.T.U. [Women's Christian Temperance Union] of the third district of Iowa convened at the Christian church in this city on Tuesday for a two days session. The attendance of delegates from the other counties is quite small, but more are expected to arrive to day. President, Mrs. Mary Thomas, of Osceola, secretary, Miss Winnie Hickson, of Humeston, and treasurer, Mrs. Cynthia Hertz, of Osceola, arrived Tuesday, and other delegates registered were Mrs. Pennick and Mrs. Denley, of Osceola. Miss Mary Barbour, of Los Angeles, Calif., one of the national organizers, is also here and will lecture at the Christian church this (Wednesday) evening.
