The 50th Regiment Iowa Volunteer Infantry, formerly the 2nd Regiment of the Iowa National Guard - was ordered into quarters at Camp McKinley, Des Moines, Iowa, on April 25, 1898, and mustered into service on May 17, 1898. The regiment went by rail to Jacksonville, Florida, arriving there on May 24, 1898. They were assigned to the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division of the 7th Army Corps. Due to a high number of soldiers suffering from illnesses, the regiment returned to Iowa, arriving in Des Moines on September 17, 1898. The soldiers were granted 30-day furloughs which was extended 10 additional days. The regiment reassembled at camp and was mustered out of service on November 30, 1898. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Company B of the 51st Regiment Iowa Volunteers was recruited from 30 different Iowa towns. Company B's personal make-up was considered to be the best of the regiment.
