Richard Platt came to Dallas
County in about 1846 or 1847. He purchased land in Sec. 14 and
26 in 1850, on the Des Moines River. Richard was born in VA in
1794, son of Henry Platt. The family moved to Washington County,
PA, then Tuscarawas County, OH where Henry died, then Richland
Co. OH, then Fayette Co., IN and finally Dallas County, IA where
Richard died in 1866. He is buried in the Robbins Chapel
cemetery. His wife was Margaret Dickson born Washington County,
PA in 1796. She died in 1875 and is buried in Robbins Chapel.
Richard and Margaret had 10
children, 8 lived in Iowa:
HENRY, b. 1818; m. Melinda
Fisher, lived near Xenia
ELIZABETH, b. 1823; m. J. C.
Bailey
JOSEPH, b. ca. 1825; buried in
Robbins Chapel
JOHN, b. 1829; m. Martha Smalley,
daughter of Oscar. D. Smalley, a neighbor. John d. 1874 and all
of his children died young (30-40s), but Martha remained on the
farm until her death in 1921. The farm (in Sec. 23) was left to
two grandchildren. This family all buried in Robbins
Chapel.
MARTHA, b. 1832; m. Michael B.
Miller and lived in Madrid, d. 1907, buried in Madrid.
ISAAC, b. 1834; m. Almira Gould
from Polk County
NANCY, b. 1836; m. William R.
Snyder, d. 1869 and was buried in the Snyder cemetery (private)
MARY ANN, b. 1838; m. Samuel S.
Purdy, lived in Dallas County, d. 1891, buried Robbins Chapel
Henry, Elizabeth and Isaac moved
on to Boulder County, CO after Richard died.
Richard had a brother, Robert,
who came to Dallas County a few years after Richard. He and his
wife, Martha (she d. 1880), were buried in Robbins Chapel. No
children.
