Vernon Died Last Night Pioneer Woodward Woman Taken By Heart Failure Mrs. Clara Vernon, 76, pioneer Woodward woman died suddenly at 1:30 a.m. in Woodward, Iowa as the result of an acute attack of heart disease. Mrs. Vernon had been in her customary health when she retired for the night but became ill shortly after midnight and death followed soon after. The death has been a shock to her family and many friends in the community, where she has resided for more than fifty years. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ethel Winslow of Montevideo, Minn, and three sons: Ray, Will and F. B. Vernon all of Woodward. Twi sisters survive, Mrs. Cora Herdman, Woodward, and Mrs. Blanche Preston, Santa Monica, California. Her husband preceded her in death many years ago. No arrangements had been made late today for the funeral rites which will be held in Woodward. Mrs. Vernon was a memvber4 of the Methodist church and of the Rebekah Lodge. She was a native of Illinois and came to Iowa as a young woman. Her residence has been in Woodward and Boone County for the past half-century.” Sudden Death Of Mrs. Clara Vernon Funeral For Pioneer Lady Held Saturday at Local Methodist Church Mrs. Clara Vernon passed away Thursday morning, December 17, at 1:30 at the home of Mrs. Wm. Wade. Her death was due to a severe heart attack and her final illness was of but a few hours duration. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, at 1:30 p.m. at the Methodist Church with the pastor, Rev, Harry Coates, in charge. Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Mrs. Ray Cunningham, Mrs. Will Cooper, V. A. Neal, and O. C. Miller, with Mrs. Jess R. Perry as accompanist. Flowers were cared for by Mrs. Ambert Rhoads, Mrs. John Hupton, Mrs. Louis Rhoads and Mrs. A. M. McColl. Pall bearers were grandsons of the deceased as follows: Rex Winslow, of Monevideo, Minn., John Russell, Ross, Lawrence and Donald Vernon, of Woodward. The large number of sympathizing friends and neighbors in attendance at these last sad rites, and the many beautiful floral offerings, attested to the love and esteem held for her who had lived over half a century in this community. Obituary Clara Smith Vernon, daughter of Asahal Curtis and Mariah Smith, was born in De Kalb County, Illinois, December 18, 1860, and died at Woodward, Iowa December 16, 1936. When a small girl she came with her parents to Boone county, Iowa, and has lived in this vicinity since that time. She was united in marriage to David Benjamin Vernon on July 1, 1879, and to this union was born seven children—Jesse Miles, Raymond Asahal, William Albert, Frank Benjamin, Ethel May, Hallie Melvina and Edith Irene. Her husband and three children, Miles, Hallie and Edith, preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn her passing Raymond, William and Frank Vernon, of Woodward Ethel Winslow of Montivideo, Minn., thirteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren; her two sisters, Mrs. Cora Herdman, of Woodward, and Mrs. Blanche Preston, of Santa Monica, California; and two half-sisters, Mrs. Ellen Andrew and Mrs. Helen Grimm of Des Moines. In 1892 she united with the Methodist church of this place and through all these years has been an earnest and faithful member, believing in God’s teachings and obeying His precepts. She was also a member of Gradatim Rebekah Lodge and gave unstintingly of her time and energy in the work of the order. Typed by Janet E.
