Ethel M. (Lownes) DeWitt (1910 - 1996)
Ethel M. DeWitt was born April 20, 1910, the daughter of Ernest and Caroline Lownes. She died at the Denison Care Center at the age of eighty-five.Ethel was born on a farm near Charter Oak, Iowa where she grew up. She began her education in a rural school near Charter Oak, graduated from the Denison High School and received her teaching certificate from Drake University. After receiving her education she taught in several rural schools in Crawford County.
On June 30, 1932, Ethel was united in marriage to Wade DeWitt and settled on a farm in Crawford County, where they were blessed with the birth of one son. In 1948, the couple moved to Deloit, where Ethel continued to teach in rural schools. In 1951, the family moved to Denison, where Ethel was employed as a clerk at the JC Penny [sic] Store. Wade died in December 1976 and Ethel continued living in Denison until entering the Denison Care Center in May of 1988.
Ethel enjoyed occupying her free time doing cross-word puzzles, reading and she loved fishing. She was a loving, caring wife, mother and grandmother who devoted her life to her family. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Denison.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wade; two brothers, Raymond and Earl Lownes. Survivors include one son, Donald L. DeWitt and his wife, Beverly; three grand-daughters, Jennifer Anne, Sarah Elizabeth and Katherine Abigail DeWitt, all of Norman, Oklahoma; one brother, Ernest B. Lownes and his wife, Ada of Canon City, Colorado; also one sister-in-law, Betty Lownes of Denison.
Funeral services werre held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 17, 1996 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. Dr. Edward Peterson officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Deloit Cemetery in Deloit, Iowa. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "How Great Thou Art". Pallbearers were: Arvin Kitchenmaster, Dennis Lownes, Mike Fitzpatrick, Richard Butler, Les Krueger and Kirby Lownes. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn Gertrude (Andresen) Kinney (1916 - 1993)
Evelyn Gertrude Kinney was born on Nov. 1, 1916, the daughter of Gustav and Maud Richardson Andresen. She died on Feb. 5, 1993 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 76 years. Evelyn was born on a farm in Jackson Township and received her formal education at the Pleasant Valley School in Stockholm Township.After completing her education, Evelyn was united in marriage to Reed Kinney on Dec. 26, 1934 in Cushing, Ia. The couple settled on farms in Crawford and Shelby counties and were blessed with the birth of four children.
In her spare time, Evelyn enjoyed collecting various articles, cooking, sewing and embroidery. Additionally, she enjoyed occupying her time at garage sales. She was a loving and caring wife and mother who provided a warm and affectionate home for her family. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Deloit.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Reed on Nov. 11, 1982.
Survivors include three sons, Kenneth and his wife, Shirley of Anchorage, Alaska, Donald and his wife, Laura Faye of Vail, Dale and his wife, Penny of Denison; and one daughterr Sharon Riley and her husband, Gerald of Deloit. Also, 13 grandchildren, one brother, Earl Andresen and his wife, Esther of Denison; three sisters, Bernice McCoy of Buhl, Idaho, Lucille Krayenhagen of Battle Creek, Maxine Jurgensen and her husband, Edlef of Denison; and one brother-in-law, Paul Kinney and his wife, Carol of Mapleton.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Feb. 8, 1993 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with Pastor Hilmer Hafner officiating the service and graveside rites at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me", "Crown Him with Many Crowns" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives."
Honorary pallbearers were Clarence Boger and Virginia Boger. Pallbearers were Pat Krayenhagen, Mike Krayenhagen, Robert Andresen, Loren Kastner, Marc Kinney and Steve Rau. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Son's Funeral Home in Denison.

Evelyn Rehse (Winans) Marshall (1915 - 1991)
Evelyn Rehse Marshall was born at Deloit, Iowa, Oct. 17, 1915, the youngest daughter of Earl and Mae Newcom Winans. Her mother died when she was age three and she was raised by her father and paternal grandmother. Her early years were spent in the communities of Deloit, Woodbine, Dunlap and Missouri Valley. In 1922, the family returned to Dunlap where she received her education and grew to womanhood. In 1935, Evelyn and her father returned to Deloit where she resided until 1940 when she moved to Grant Township Ida County.On June 1, 1942, Evelyn was united in marriage with Richard Rehse. They made their home on the farm in Grant Township and were blessed with four children: Fredrick, Kenneth Paul, Robert Ray and Paula. In 1958, the family moved from the farm into Schleswig where Richard died, March 29, 1965.
In August of 1965, Evelyn and Paula moved to Dunlap where on Aug. 5, 1967, Evelyn was united in marriage with Earl Marshall. They made their home on the Marshall farm south of Dow City until December of 1969 when they purchased the Woodbine Hotel and moved there. Earl died Feb. 11, 1975, and in 1978, Evelyn moved to Dow City to be near her daughter.
In 1981, Evelyn moved to the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison. Since March of 1983, she had resided at the Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine where her death occurred Tuesday evening, July 23, 1991. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 75 years, 9 months, and 6 days.
She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Through the years Evelyn opened her home and her heart to over thirty foster children that she lovingly cared for.
Including her parents and her two husbands, Evelyn was preceded in death by three sons, Kenneth Paul and Robert Ray Rehse who died in infancy, and Fredrick Rehse who died in 1982; and two brothers, Lyle and Kenneth Winans.
Survivors include her daughter, Paula and her husband, Ronald Cross of Dow City; one stepson, Robert Marshall and wife, Carol of Chicago, Ill.; step-daughter, Mary and husband, Norman Klaus of Hawarden; foster son, Tom Bolter of Council Bluffs; foster daughter, Mary and husband, Terry Plambeck of Council Bluffs; daughter-in-law, Dora Wren of Copperas Cove, Texas; four grandchildren: Troy Cross, serving in the United States Navy in the Persian Gulf, Greg Cross of Dow City, and Carla and Chad Rehse of Copperas Cove, Texas; seven step grandchildren; seven step great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen and her husband, William Campbell of Deloit; and two sisters-in-law, Vi Winans of San Diego, Calif., and Harriet Winans of Sacramento, Calif.; also many foster children, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 27, at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Dow City, with Elder Eugene Sherer and Elder William Sherer officiating. Music for the service was provided by Elder William Sherer singing "Old Rugged Cross" and "Going Down the Valley One By One." Beverly Custer served as organist for the service. Pallbearers included Troy Cross, Greg Cross, Chad Rehse, Mark Marshall, Randy Klaus, Martin Klaus and Ron Klaus. Interment was in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Grant Township, Schleswig. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Everett Quick (1917 - 1995)
Everett, son of Clarence and Dorothy Nelson Quick, was born October 4, 1917 at Harlan, Iowa. When he was very young he moved with his family to the Irwin area where he attended rural schools. After he finished his schooling Everett worked on the family farm. His father died in 1940 before he could move with his family to the farm he had purchased north of Manilla, so Everett and his mother moved there in the spring of 1941.On December 19, 1943 Everett was united in marriage with Irene Grace Benischek at the Methodist Parsonage in Manilla. To this union five children were born. They farmed the family farm and eventually Everett had his own trucking business. From 1964 until his retirement Everett worked on road construction while they continued to live on the farm. In 1992 they moved into Manilla.
Everett was a member of the Methodist Church for over 50 years. He enjoyed visiting and helping others in their time of need and especially enjoyed his family. He also valued the friendships he and Irene made while attending the Annual Corn Husking Contests. Everett was in poor health for a number of years. He underwent surgery for removal of a tumor, which was successful. However, due to complications following that surgery, he died on Wednesday, August 9, 1995 at Clarkson Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 77 years, 10 months, and 5 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and the following brothers and sisters: Elmer Quick, in infancy; Gladys Quick, in infancy; Alfred Quick; and Alice Russ.
Survivors include his wife, Irene, of Manilla; his children: Marilyn and her husband, Steve Schrum, of Nevada; Clarence Quick and his wife, Lee, of Des Moines; Karen Pounds, of Omaha, Nebraska; Allen Quick and his wife, Darcy, of Woodbine; and Janet Quick, of Dubuque; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild; a brother, Donald Quick and his wife, Darlene, of Salt Lake City, Utah; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Services were Saturday, August 12, 1995 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Church of Manilla, South Church with Pastor Dave Rauch of Cornerstone Family Church in Manning, Iowa. RuthAnn Barry served as organist with Milton Barry as vocalist singing "In The Garden" and "The Lord's Prayer." Interment was in the Nishnabotna Cemetery in Manilla, Iowa. Casketbearers were Paul C. Christensen, Mark Petersen, Ellsworth Schechinger, John Blom, Allyn Bartelson and Bob Lohrmann. Honorary casketbearers were Mervin Arnold, Leonard Jones, Boyde Merrick, Neal Holmes, Lester Boyens, Virgil Wiley, Melvin Schechinger and Merle Schroeder.

Faith Maxine (Sachau) Schmidt (1917 - 2003)
Faith Maxine Schmidt was born August 9, 1917, the daughter of John H. and Minnie Jensen Sachau. She died Monday, August 11, 2003 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-six.Maxine was born in Deloit, Iowa and received her education in the Goodrich Township School and the Deloit High School, graduating in Christ on March 13 and confirmed on March 30, 1938 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.
On January 29, 1939, Maxine was united in marriage to Arlo Schmidt at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison. The couple settled on the family farm and were blessed with the birth of one son, Lodean. While on the farm, Maxine helped Arlo with the daily chores, including milking cows and raising chickens. In 1988, Maxine moved to Schleswig where she remained until moving to Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison in 1999.
In her spare time, Maxine enjoyed crocheting, sewing, cooking, baking, and canning peaches, cherries and sweet corn. She made elderberry jelly and the most wonderful potato soup. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who loved spending time with her family and spoiling them. She enjoyed listening to her grandaughter, Amber, play the piano and spent time teaching her granddaughter, Angela, to sew. Her grandson, Adam was always fond of visiting grandma's house because she would play catch and taught him to ride his bike. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arlo in 1988; two brothers: Louis and Harry; one sister, Dolly Pautsch. She is survived by her son, Lodean and his wife, Christina of Denison; three grandchildren: Amber Schmidt and her fiancee, Trevor Paska of Ida Grove, Iowa; Angela Schmidt, and Adam Schmidt of Denison; one brother-in-law, Virgil Schmidt and his wife, Ruth of Denison; two sisters-in-law: Irene Sachau of Denison; and Ruth Sachau of Greeley, Colorado; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 15, 2003 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the services and grave side rites held at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Organist Karen Kahl provided the organ occompaniment for soloist Eldon Hardekopf as he sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me", and for the congregational hymn "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound". Those serving as honorary pallbearers were: Clarence Friedrichsen, Angela Schmidt, Adam Schmidt, and Larry Grill. Those serving as pallbearers were: Jimmy Schmidt, Curtis Sachau, Joel Schmidt, Delbert Sachau, Chad Petersen, and Walter Miller. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Walter H. F. Sonnichsen (1910 - 1987)
Walter H.F. Sonnichsen, the son Andreas and Emma Rahn Sonnichsen, was born August 26, 1910, on a farm in Hanover Township. He was baptized on Oct. 27, 1910 by Pastor Wm. Frese and also confirmed by Pastor Frese on Jan. 8, 1926. Walter received his education in the rural schools and spent his early years helping on his father's farm.On Dec 11, 1938, he married DeLoris Lamp of rural Denison. To this union four children were born: Marlene, Robert, Martin and Mary. The couple farmed until 1955 when they moved to an acreage south of Denison.
For several years Walter was employed by Ray Shubat at a feed and seed store and also by Farm Service Co-op. He also did custodial work at the Denison Public Schools. His last employment was at Zion Lutheran Church where he served as custodian for six and one half years until his retirement in 1980. Because of ill health, he entered Eventide Lutheran Home in April of 1984. His death occurred there on October 19, 1987. He attained the age of 77 years, one month and 23 days. Walter was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and a member of the voters' assembly.
Preceding him in death were his parents. Survivors include his wife DeLoris, of Denison; four children: Robert and his wife, Arelene, of Aurora, Colo., Martin and his wife, Carolyn of Gresham, Or., Marlene and her husband, Dennis Bergstadt, of Denison, Mary and her husband, Brian Deamer of Sumter, S. Ca., one sister, Edna Carnes, of Denison; one brother, Edward Sonnichsen and his wife, Esther of Denison; six grandsons and one granddaughter; many relatives and friends.
Services were held Thursday, Oct. 22, at Zion Lutheran Church, with Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiating. Comfort in music was provided by organist Karen Kahl and soloist Henry Henningsen who sang "How Great Thou Art". Congregational Hymns were "What A Friend We Have in Jesus" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". Casket bearers included Bill Cullen, Bill Wright, Lyle Frazier, Edmund Petersen, Wilbur Reimers and Larry Boeck. Interment was in Oakland Cemetery, Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mona (Knop) Gierstorf (1917 - 1993)
Mona Gierstorf was born on a farm in Soldier Township, near Charter Oak, Iowa February 7, 1917, the daughter of Fred and Alma Ullerich Knop. She was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism February 21, 1917 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township and confirmed in her Christian faith there March 29, 1931.Mona was raised on the farm and received her formal education at the Immanuel Lutheran School. Following her schooling and prior to her marriage, she worked at home.
On February 25, 1945, Mona was united in marriage with Reinhard Gierstorf at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township. The Gierstorfs farmed all of their lives residing for two years on a farm west of Schleswig before moving to their present farm home five miles south of Schleswig in 1947.
Mona died Thursday morning, June 24, 1993 at the Horn memorial Hospital in Ida Grove. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 76 years, 4 months, and 17 days.
In addition to helping her husband farm, Mona had many interest and hobbies including flower and vegetable gardening, photography, and crocheting and sewing. She was a charter and lifelong member of the Farmerette Club, and an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison where she belonged to Ladies Aid, Fellowship Club and Christian Craft Time Group.
Mona was preceded in death by her parents. Those who remain to cherish her memory include her husband, Reinhard Gierstorf of rural Denison, nine brothers and sisters and their spouses, Evelyn Lively of Salina, Kansas, Mildred and John Melvin of Belton, Texas, Florence and Edwin Hopp of Charter Oak, Iowa, Frederick and Evelyn Knop of Prairie Village, Kansas, Julius and Ina Knop of Denison, Herbert and Trixie Knop of Ida Grove, Iowa, Ruth and Dale Bruhn of Mapleton, Iowa, Eugene and Colleen Knop of Newport Beach, California, and Phyllis and Norman Dinsdale of Murray, Utah and one aunt, Dorothy Schultz of Schleswig, Iowa. Also surviving are many nieces, and Nephews, and host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, June 26, 1993, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser and the Rev. Philip E. Bloch officiating. Music for the service was provided by Henry Henningsen singing "I'm But A Stranger Here" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus". Karen Kahl served as organist. Casket bearers included Merle Witt, Arlen Kuehl, Evan Bruhn, Mike Knop, Alan Bruhn, and Don Knop. Interment was in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery at Charter Oak, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Lucinda Lena (Rath) Kahl (1914 - 2006)
Lucinda Lena Katherina Kahl was born March 5, 1914, the daughter of Henry and Christina Petersen Rath. She died Saturday, May27, 2006 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-two.Lucinda was born in Nishnabotna Township, Crawford County, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ on April 12, 1914 at German Evangelical St. Petri Lutheran Church in Washington Township by Rev. Henry Niewoehner and later confirmed on April 13, 1930 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa by William Frese. She received her education in rural schools in Washington Township.
On February 24, 1935, Lucinda was united in marriage to Marvin D. Kahl at the Zion Lutheran Church Parsonage in Denison, Iowa by Rev. Frese. The couple made their home in Denison and were blessed with five children. In 1943, they started farming and lived on various farms in Crawford County. After farming for twenty years near Charter Oak in February of 1974, they moved to Charter Oak, due to Marvin's failing health. Marvin passed away on March 7, 1975 and Lucinda continued to make her home in Charter Oak and worked part time at Auld's Green house in Denison for seven years and then worked at the Senior Center in Charter Oak until retiring on June 30, 1988.
Lucinda was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and their Ladies Aid for many years. She loved flower and vegetable gardening, making homemade bread and canning. In her leisure time, she enjoyed embroidering, quilting and making afghans.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Marvin, infant son in 1940, four brothers, triplet brothers in infancy and her brother Raymond in 1939, a sister, Hilda Whited in 1955 and her husband, Warren and one great-grandson, Peyton.
Survivors include three daughters, Janice Throckmorton and her husband, Daniel of Charter Oak; Linda Brown of Bellevue, Nebraska; Leola Kahl of Lincoln, Nebraska; one son, Darold Kahl and his wife, Karen of Denison; eight grandchildren, Ronald Throckmorton and his wife, Patty; Randy Throckmorton; Gary Kahl and his wife Kathy; Shelly Freese and her husband, Bradley; Terri Weilenman and her husband, Tim; Kim Raymond and her husband, Jeff; Mike Sears and his wife, Missy; Kris Zeimen and her husband, Brian; fifteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 31, 2006 at St John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Richard Merrill officiated the services and grave side rites held at St John's Lutheran Cemetery in Charter Oak. Art Beeck served as soloist and provided the organ for the solo selection of "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound" and for the congregational hymns., "How Great Thou Art", "I'm But A Stranger Here" and "Abide with Me". Those serving as pallbearers were, Ronald Throckmorton, Jeff Raymond, Joe Raymond, Mike Sears, Randy Throckmorton, Bradley Freese, Brian Zeimen and Gary Kahl. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of the arrangements.

Luella E. (Volkmann) Thul (1918 - 2000)
Luella E. Thul was born December 30, 1918, the daughter of Jacob and Anna Grell Volkmann. She died Thursday, December 21, 2000 at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-one.Luella was born near Schleswig, Iowa and received her education in the Schleswig Community School. After receiving her education, Luella worked at a cafe in Schleswig and as janitor at the Schleswig High School.
On December 15, 1968, Luella was united in marriage to Emil Martin Thul at her parent's home in Schleswig. Luella worked at Cronk's Restaurant in Denison, retiring at age 65. Luella enjoyed crocheting, reading and solving cross word puzzles. She also enjoyed watching the game of golf.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one sister, Velma Bliesmann. Survivors include one daughter, Deloris Bigge and her husband, Larry of Omaha; one grandson, Scott Dull and his wife, Andrea of Omaha; one great-granddaughter, Cara; one niece, Mary Schultz and her husband, Allen of Ida Grove; and one nephew, Wayne Bliesmann and his wife, Ina Mae of Schleswig.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, December 27, 2000 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Douglas Searles officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Dorothy Jessen provided the organ music "On Eagle's Wings" and accompaniment for soloist, Elisabeth Searles singing "Amazing Grace." Those serving as pallbearers were: Palmer Volkmann, James Whiteing, Doug Comstock, Leon Gosch, Robert Thul and Leslie Grell. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Women's Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Martin William Kragel (1914 - 1977)
Martin William Kragel was born on Jan. 24, 1914 at Charter Oak, the son of August and Martha Kragel. He died on Monday evening, Sept. 26, 1977 at St. Joseph Hospital, Sioux City, at the age of 63. Martin was raised on the family farm near Charter Oak and received his formal education in the rural schools of the area. He was baptized and later confirmed into the Lutheran faith.On Dec. 5, 1935, he was united in marriage to Edna Holtorf at Ute. To this union were born three sons. The family made their home on the farm south of Ute. Later in 1944 Martin returned to the home place where he was raised, and continued to farm until the present time.
Martin was preceded in death by his father, August, in 1956 and one grandson. Survivors include his wife Edna of Charter Oak, three sons, Donald and Gene, both of Ute, and Richard of Charter Oak. Also by nine grandchildren, his mother, Mrs. Martha Kragel of Eventide Lutheran Home, Denison, one brother Paul of Charter Oak and one sister Helen, Mrs. Herbert Petersen of Mapleton.
Funeral services were held Sept. 29, at 10:00 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Charter Oak. Burial was made in St. John's Lutheran cemetery. The Rev. Henry W. Friedrich officiated at the services. Music at the service was provided by Mrs. Paul Clausen, organist and St. John's Ladies Choir. Pallbearers were Elden Goslar, Ronald Maack, Paul Kuhlmann, Jr., Paul Kragel Jr., Roy Borcherdt and Norman Petersen. Herman Maahs served as an honorary pallbearer. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Charter Oak.

Marvin Albert Frederick Schwenn (1919 - 1982)
Marvin Albert Frederick Schwenn was born on April 25, 1919 in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Wilhelm and Anna Schmidt Schwenn. He died Aug. 14, 1982 at his home in Denison at the age of 63.Marvin was reared in Goodrich Township. He received his formal education in the Goodrich No. 5 Center School. Marvin was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. After the completion of his education, Marvin served in the Military service during World War II. After his release from the Military he returned to Crawford County where he farmed.
On Sept. 7, 1952, Marvin was united in marriage to Irma Frahm at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Together they made their home on the Schwenn home place in Goodrich Township. Mrs. Schwenn died in 1960. Marvin continued to make his home on the farm until he moved to Denison.
In addition to his wife, Marvin was preceded in death by his father in 1972, and one brother Clarence in 1965. Survivors include, his mother, Mrs. Anna Schwenn of Denison, one brother, Alvin Schwenn of Denison and two sisters, Violet, Mrs. Alvin Petersen of Seaside, Calif. and Irene, Mrs. Ewald Stark of Westside. Also surviving are a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Aug. 16, at 2:30 p.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Burial was in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery. The Rev. Jack D. Heck officiated at the services. Pallbearers were Keith Schwenn, Ken Schwenn, Mervin Petersen, Larry Stark, Loel Hunt and Steve Schmidtz. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Reinhard B. Gierstorf (1916 - 2003)
Reinhard B. Gierstorf was born on a farm in Morgan Township, Crawford County, Iowa, January 11, 1916, the son of Chris and Lizzie Schwarz Gierstorf. He was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism February 6, 1916 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, Iowa and confirmed in his Christian Faith there April 13, 1930. He was raised on the farm and received his education in the rural schools.On February 25, 1945, Reinhard was united in marriage with Mona Knop at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township. The Gierstorfs farmed all of their lives, residing for two years on a farm west of Schleswig before moving to their farm home five miles south of Schleswig in 1947 where they farmed until retiring in 1980.
After the death of his wife Mona in 1993, Reinhard remained at his farm home until January of 2000 when he moved to the Reed House in Denison. In July of 2002 he moved to the Denison Care Center where he was presently residing. Reinhard died Wednesday afternoon, May 14, 2003 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 87 years, 4 months and 3 days.
Farming, and later on in his life, gardening was Reinhard's pride and joy, sharing his garden harvest with whoever stopped by. Other interests he enjoyed included fishing, traveling and a good euchre game with friends and family. He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.
Reinhard was preceded in death by his parents, Chris and Lizzie Gierstorf, one brother, Wilbert Gierstorf and his beloved wife, Mona Knop Gierstorf. Those remaining to cherish his memory include six sisters and brothers, Paulina Meyer of Manilla, Iowa, Erma and husband, Harold Bornhoft of Schleswig, Iowa, Esther Gierstorf of Schleswig, Iowa, Elmer and wife, Marge Gierstorf of Charter Oak, Iowa, Delbert Gierstorf of Schleswig, Iowa, Leona and husband, Herbert Meyer of Denison, Iowa, one sister-in-law, Lorraine Groth of Schleswig, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 17, 2003 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser and Vicar David Lyons officiating. Music for the service included three congregational hymns, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", "I'm But a Stranger Here, Heaven Is My Home" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Jeanette Venzke served as organist. Pallbearers were Mike Knop, Evan Bruhn, Marc Meyer, Dennis Gierstorf, Dennis Knop and Byron Bruhn. Interment was at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Charter Oak, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa was privileged to be in charge of the arrangements.

Roberta I. "Bobbi" Ernst, age 87, of Ida Grove, Iowa, died Sunday, March 19, 2000, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa, of complications following a stroke.Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., March 22, 2000, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, with Revs. John Schauer, Michael Saylor, and Eugene Ernst officiating. Burial followed in Grant Township Cemetery in rural Schleswig, Iowa. Friends called at the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove on Tuesday from 3-8 p.m. Pallbearers were her nephews, Edwin Schau, Ray H. Ernst, Joe Weed, Jerry Ernst, Merlin Rabe, and Vernon King.
Roberta Ione Ernst was born November 29, 1912, in Charter Oak, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Anna (Lind) Weed. She graduated from Charter Oak Public Schools in 1930, and taught in a one-room school house east of town until her marriage. She was known by everyone, not as Roberta, but as Bobbi.
Bobbi and Ray C. Ernst were married February 8, 1935, at Redeemer Lutheran Morningside Church in Sioux City. In the same year, she was confirmed at Redeemer by Pastor Otten. The couple farmed near Hornick, Iowa, for eight years, then moved in 1943 to their farm south of Ida Grove. They retired from farming in 1975. With Ray's death in 1997, Bobbi moved into an apartment in Ida Grove.
She was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove since 1943. She held several offices in the Ladies Aid and was a member of the Anna Circle, and was past-president of the Mapleton Zone LWML. For many years she belonged to the Grant Homemakers. Through the years she enjoyed her church work, bowling, bridge, gardening, and took great pride in keeping an immaculate home.
Bobbi was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Ray; her parents; three sisters, Lillie Pruehs, Hattie King, and Ethel King; and two brothers, Cecil and Bernard Weed.
Survivors include one son and his wife, Duane and Ellen Ernst of Ida Grove; two grandsons, Erich of Des Moines; and Gregor of Des Plaines, Illinois; and many nephews and nieces.
Christensen-Ciha Funeral Homes of Ida Grove was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were her nephews, Edwin Schau, Ray II Ernst, Joe Weed, Jerry Ernst, Merlin Rabe and Vernon King.

Vernon H. Schroeder (1911 - 1991)
Vernon H. Schroeder was born March 14, 1911 in Hayes Township near Manning, Iowa, the son of Johannes H. and Clara Kruse Schroeder. He died May 28, 1991 at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa at the age of 80 years.Vernon was born on a farm and received his education in a rural school near his home. He was baptized Oct. 29, 1911 and confirmed in the Lutheran faith Jan. 22, 1928 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa. As a young boy he worked as a farm with his parents on the family farm before working as a farmhand for 11 years. He then worked for the REA for three years and in that time he helped to establish the REA in western Iowa.
On Dec. 31, 1942, Vernon was united in marriage to Sophie Jaacks Sievers at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage by the Rev. C.W. Schmidt. The couple settled on a farm in Hanover Township where they farmed for 30 years and raised four children. In February of 1973, they retired from farming and moved to Denison. In his spare time, Vernon enjoyed collecting scale model tractors and socializing with friends in a friendly game of cards. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and a life long member of the Hayes Township Schuetzen Verein Five Mile House.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Bernice Justice. Survivors include his wife Sophie of Denison; two children, Loween Clayberg of Webster City, and Lowell and his wife, Jean Ann of Denison; two step-children, Harold Sievers and his wife, Nancy of Lockport, Ill., and Harlow Sievers and his wife, Jolene of Humboldt; also five grandchildren: Aaron and Nathan Clayberg of Webster City, Jeremy, Julie and Jaclyn Schroeder of Denison; one step-grandchild, Kelly Pruneau of Overland Park, Kan.; two brothers, Wilbur and his wife, Gertrude of Westside, and Merlin and his wife, Ruth of Denison; and two sisters, Gertrude Christensen of Stanton, Calif., and Phyllis Jans and her husband, Wayne of Westside.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 31, 1991 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with Pastors Kurt Kaiser and Philip E. Bloch officiating the service and the grave side rites in the Garden of the Good Shepherd of the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for a duet by Henry and Marge Henningsen singing "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" and "How Great Thou Art." The congregation sang "A Mighty Fortress is Our God." Honorary pallbearers were Milroy and Eleanor Henningsen, Alfred and Loretta Petersen, Harry and Nell Petersen, Vincent and Grace Keating, Virgil and Violet Boeck, Wilbur and Anna Harm, Irvin and Marlan Harm and Marie Keating. Vertus H. Brus (1911 - 1993)
Vertus H. Brus was born on April 25, 1911, the son of Otto and Emma Lage Brus. He died on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1993, at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 82 years.Vertus was born on a farm near Manning and received his early education in a rural school in Hayes Township. After completing his education, he was employed by area farmers; also by various construction firms, and was one of the foremen for the Hoak Construction Company; he was also engaged in farming.
On July 19, 1941, Vertus was united in marriage to Ida Martens of Westside in Omaha, Neb. The couple settled on a farm near Westside for 52 years, until Vertus entered the Denison Care Center on April 1, 1993. He was a loving and caring husband and in his spare time he enjoyed fishing, hunting, square dancing, had a unique sense of humor and was a joy to be with. The couple enjoyed entertaining with music in western Iowa for 29 years. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Arcadia, Hayes Township 5 Mile House Schuetzen Verein and served on the Board of Directors for South Crawford Rural Electric for 23 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Willis. Survivors include his wife, Ida of Westside; two brothers, Arnold Brus and his wife, Luella of Manning and Elmer Brus of the Carroll Manor; also many nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, with Reverend Perkins Patton officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Westside Cemetery in Westside. Evelyn Johnson provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Rubie Kastner singing, "Beyond the Sunset" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." Pallbearers were: Wayne Brus, Dale Musfeldt, Merlin Nulle, Keith Lueders, Eddie Holdsworth and Glen Martins. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them for lunch at the Westside Community Building, served by the church ladies. Walter Henry Hansohn (1915 - 1998)
Walter Henry Hansohn was born September 13, 1915, the son of Henry and Ida Schultz Hansohn. He died Friday, October 23, 1998 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of eighty-three.Walter was born on a farm in Stockholm Township, near Kiron, Iowa. He received his education in Stockholm No. 4, a rural school near his home. After completing his education, he farmed with his family until joining the U.S. Army, in August 1942. During his tour of military duty, he served his country in artillery battalions in Europe, Belgium, France, Germany and England. After receiving an Honorable Discharged in 1945, he returned to Kiron rejoining his family on the farm.
On May 4, 1947, Walter was united in marriage to Arla Ewoldt at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township. The couple settled on the family farm and were blessed with the birth of two children. Walter was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church. He was a devoted, loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. Through his life, he was a devoted steward of the land he loved, caring for it as he loaded and bailed hay and cleaning the farm by sticking thistles. In his leisure time, he loved to Polka dance.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and three sisters-in-law. Survivors include his wife, Arla of Kiron; two sons, Raymond and his wife, Sue of Culpeper, Virginia, Ralph and special friend, Darlene Trieweiler of Denison; four grandchildren, Chris of Culpeper, Virginia; Paul of Washington, D.C., Mark of Ft. Lewis, Washington, and Linnae of Denison; and one brother, LeRoy Hansohn of Kiron.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, October 26, 1998 at the St. John's Lutheran Church, Kiron, Iowa. Rev. Hilmer Hafner officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Stockholm Township, Kiron. Walter Herman Jaacks (1911 - 1996)
Walter Herman Jaacks was born July 4, 1911, the son of Emil and Rosa Hildebrandt Jaacks. He died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison on Saturday, January 20, 1996 at the age of eighty-four.Walter was born on the family farm northwest of Denison. He was baptized on September 14, 1911 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and was later confirmed in the Lutheran faith on July 6, 1925 with his brother and sister. He received his education in a rural school near the family home in Goodrich Township.
On March 29, 1933, Walter was united in marriage to Jessie Moeller at Schleswig, Iowa. The couple settled on the family farm and were blessed with the birth of three children. Walter was a highly regarded and well known farmer and livestock producer in the region. He served as a director and president of the Crawford County Beef Producers Association, and the Crawford County Fair Board for which he served twenty years including a seven year tenure as president of the board. He was a lifelong member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and was a member of their Voters Assembly. Additionally, Walter served on the building committee for Zion's Parish Hall that was built in the early sixties.
In 1987, the couple retired from their farming career of fifty-four years and moved to Denison. In 1995, Walter moved to the Eventide Lutheran Home.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, one infant son, Louis and a brother, Henry. Survivors include his wife Jessie of Denison; one son, Willis and his wife, Mary Ann of Sigourney, Iowa; one daughter, Jeanette Flagge and her husband Tom of Fort Dodge; one granddaughter, Jill Jaacks; three grandsons: Jon Jaacks, Jay Jaacks and Andrew Flagge; two step-grandchildren, Craig Damerval and Janet Lancial; two great-grandsons, Kyle and Eric Jaacks; and three step-great-grandchildren: Christian and Kaitlyn Damerval and Braxton Lancial. Also, one sister Sophie Schroeder of Denison; one sister-in-law, Adeline Jaacks of Denison; one brother-in-law, John H. Moeller and his wife, Bernice of Schleswig; many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 23, 1996 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Luther Clarence Hutchinson (1919 - 1995)
Luther Clarence Hutchinson was born January 4, 1919 at Denison, Iowa, the son of Thomas and Abbie Winey Hutchinson.He was raised on a farm and attended rural school and was later graduated from the Denison High School. While growing up on the farm Luther was very active in 4-H and held various offices and won several medals and awards including the Grand Champion of Crawford County Fair for six years and Grand Champion at Omaha Aksarben for two years. After his graduation he went on to Chicago, Illinois and attended the American Technical Institute studying Business Administration.
In 1941, Luther went overseas to serve his country in the U.S. Army Medical Corps where he was a P.O.W. for two and a half years. After he served his country Luther returned to Deloit where he owned and operated the Deloit Mercantile Company until 1954 when he moved to Ida Grove and began working as a District Supervisor for the Des Moines Register and later as a State Sales Manager for Arkfeld Manufacturing Company. In 1958 he opened the Hutchinson's Flower Shoppe in Ida Grove and also sold real estate there until 1968.
After leaving Ida Grove in 1968 Luther remained in the sales field in Kansas City, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Phoenix. He resided in Scottsdale, Arizona and it was at his home there that his death occurred, May 7, 1995. He had attained the age of 76 years, 4 months and 3 days.
Luther was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter Sally Carney and her husband Dennis of Des Moines, Iowa and two grandchildren, Alissa and Joshua Carney of Des Moines, Iowa, and other relatives and friends.
Memorial services were held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, May 19, 1995 at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa with the Rev. Alice Bolen officiating. Glenn Rankin served as organist playing three selections "Amazing Grace", "In The Garden" and "Old Rugged Cross". Military Honors were provided by the American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa. Interment was in the Deloit Cemetery at Deloit, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Leone A. (Jochims) Gehring (1916 - 2007)
Leone A. Gehring was born June 10, 1916, the daughter of Adolph and Amanda Stockfleth Jochims. She died at the Denison Care Center, Denison, Iowa, on March 25, 2007, at the age of ninety years.Leone was born in Morgan Township, Schleswig, Iowa, and attended rural school near her home. She was a member of the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church of Schleswig and later of Zion Lutheran Church of Denison.
After completing her education, Leone worked at home until her marriage. On April 11, 1933, she was united in marriage to William Gehring at the Zion Lutheran parsonage in Denison by Rev. Wm. Frese. The couple lived with her husband's family until 1939 when they settled on a farm in Goodrich Township. They were blessed with the birth of two children. In 1943, the family purchased a farm northwest of Denison where they remained until moving to town in 1983. Leone was fond of gardening, playing cards, and visiting with friends. She liked spending time at the Senior Center. In earlier years she and William often went to movies at the Ritz and enjoyed dancing on Friday nights at the Old Colombia Hall.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sisters, Hilda Lafrentz, Sadie Ernst, and Lorraine Preul; two brothers, Clarence Jochims and Harvey Jochims; and one grandson, William Joseph Gehring.
Survivors include: one daughter, Maxine Boeck and her husband, Gaylord, of Schleswig; one son, William and his wife, Charlene, of Denison; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Alice Johnson and her husband, Roy, of Schleswig; two brothers, Arlo Jochims and Glenn Jochims, both of Carroll; one brother-in-law, Ardelbert Preul of Denison; one sister-in-law, Darlene Gehring of Ida Grove; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the services and grave side rites held at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Organist Jeanette Venzke provided accompaniment for soloist Larry Boeck as he sang "On Eagle's Wings," and for the congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art," and "I Know that My Redeemer Lives." Those serving as pallbearers were Terry Gehring, Roger Walde, Mike Watje, Dennis Hansen, Lonnie Dalton, and Allan Preul. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them for fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid.

Leone (Hulsebus) Beermann (1914 - 1989)
Leone Beermann was born at Defiance, Ia., April 21, 1914, the daughter of Peter and Floy Maxwell Hulsebus. She was raised in the Defiance area where she was baptized n 1915 at the Evangelical Church. She received her education there, graduating from the Defiance High School with the class of 1932.On Feb. 6, 1940, Leone was united in marriage with Walter H. Beermann at Denison. This union was blessed with four children, Robert, Carol, Ronald and Deborah. Walter and Leone farmed together in Crawford County for almost 49 years. They moved to their present farm home ten miles south of Denison in 1945 where she resided until her death. Leone was an avid gardener and her beautiful flower gardens were well known throughout Crawford County.
Leone died late Wednesday, Jan. 4, 1989, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Neb., where she had been hospitalized the past seven weeks. At the time of her death she had reached the age of 74 years, eight months and 13 days. Leone was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison where she was confirmed in 1953.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Nellie Jensen and one brother, Faye Hulsebus.
Survivors are her husband, Walter H. Beermann of rural Denison; four children: Robert Beermann and wife, Gail of Norwalk, Carol and husband, John Janssen of Mingo, Ronald Beermann of Castle Rock, Colo., and Deborah Beermann and husband, David Van Dusseldorp of Iowa City; two grandsons, Timothy and Daniel Beermann of Norfolk; three grand-daughters, Michelle Beermann of Norfolk, and Katharine and Sarah Van Dusseldorp of Iowa City; and two sisters, Maye Campbell of Yetter and LaVerne Marshall of Stanton. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 7, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser officiating. Leonhardt H. Schultz (1911 - 1994)
Leonhardt H. Schultz was born November 14, 1911 the son of Albert G. and Kathryn Grabau Schultz. He died at the Morningside Care Center in Ida Grove, Iowa, Tuesday, September 27, 1994 at the age of eighty-two years.Len was born in Schleswig, Iowa where he lived with his family. He received his education in the Schleswig Community Schools. After graduating from the Schleswig High School, he attended college at Iowa State University in Ames.
After completing his education, he was employed at his father's hardware store in Schleswig. In 1942 Len entered the U.S. Army, served his country during World War II as a Company Commander with the 21st Tank Battalion, 10th Armored Division in Central Europe. Receiving a Purple Heart, American Defense Ribbon, European Theater of Operations with four stars, American Theater Ribbon, and Victory Medal.
On January 24, 1943, Len was united in marriage to Helen Holly Moffit, at her brother's home in Elmhurst, Illinois. In 1946 Len was honorably discharged from the Army and the couple settled in Schleswig, where he managed the family hardware store. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, the Schleswig American Legion and V.F.W. In his free time he enjoyed pheasant hunting and in his later years he and Holly enjoyed fishing in Minnesota and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Holly in 1993, two brothers, Clarence and Walter and one sister, Lenore. Survivors include one sister, Celeste Micek of Omaha, Nebraska; a nephew, George Moffit and his wife, Pam of Carmel, Indiana; other nieces, nephews and many friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 30, 1994 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa with Rev. Donald Wagner officiating the service and grave rites held at the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound" and "Abide With Me." Pallbearers and Military Honors were: American Legion Post #645 & V.F.W. Post #3930, Schleswig. Leonore Emma (Schroeder) Hamann (1912 - 2002)
Leonore Emma (Schroeder) Hamann was born June 13, 1912 to Herman Schroeder and Ella (Peters) Schroeder in Crawford County, Iowa. Leonore graduated from the Schleswig High School in 1930. In 1932 she started teaching at Morgan No. 7 Schleswig, Iowa.She was united in marriage to Edmund Hamann on June 9, 1939. In 1958 Leonore returned to teaching furthering her education by night school and summer school. In May 1968 she graduated from Drake University with a Bachelor of Science Degree. Leonore taught 4th grade in Ida Grove for ten years and seventeen years in the Schleswig School system. She retired in May 1975. Leonore was an active member of the Women's Guild and the Dorcas Society at the United Church of Christ. Also a member of the Crawford County Hospital Auxiliary and the Iowa State Educational Association and a charter member of the Iowa Retired Teachers Association.
She was preceded in death by her husband Edmund in December 2001, her father and mother, her brother-in-law Robert who lived with them and died in March 2001, a sister Garnet and Herbert Potter, two sisters-in-law Lillie Wellendorf Johnson and Edna and Ray Bumann.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, Gary and Barbara Potter; Dennis and Trude Potter, all of Anoka, Minnesota; Earl and Shirley Bumann; Lucille Bumann Mason; Mildred and Jim Fleenor, all of Ida Grove; Dolores and Delayne Linn of Morris, Illinois; June Bumann of Englewood, Colorado; Edna Mae and Tom Phillips of Ida Grove; Lois and Ed Skinner of Altoona, Iowa; Carol and Roger Clausen of Missouri Valley, Iowa; Karen S. Bumann; Roger and Karen Bumann, all of Ida Grove; Jeanette and Dick Messer of Altoona, Iowa; and many relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 28, 2002 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Chris Burtnett officiated the service and grave rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Wendy Bumann provided the organ accompaniment for vocalists, Barb Buffum, Pam Gronau and Janet Lafrentz singing "Family Bible" and congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art" and "Precious Lord." Leota Elise (Kastner) Worley (1914 - 1999)
Leota Elise Kastner Worley was born on February 13, 1914, daughter of Edward and Lena Friedrichsen Kastner, on the family farm in Otter Creek Township near Kiron, Iowa. She passed away Saturday, April 24, 1999 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison.She was a lifelong member of the Schleswig United Church of Christ, having been baptized there as an infant and confirmed in 1929 by Rev. Kielhorn. She received her education in rural schools until age 9 then attended the Schleswig Community School, graduating with the class of 1932.
She was united in marriage to Lyle Worley on October 11, 1938 at the United Church of Christ by Rev. Rinne. They were blessed with two sons. The couple farmed west of town and in 1962 they moved to Schleswig. Lyle passed away on September 24, 1975.
She was a devoted wife and mother and grandmother who enjoyed her grandchildren very much. She was a devoted church worker and sang in the choir for fifty years, taught Sunday School and was secretary of the Sunday School for six years. She held various offices in the Women's Guild and past secretary of the Senior Citizen's Club. She was always ready to help whenever called upon.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle, her parents and her three brothers: Louie, Robert and Gilbert Kastner. Survivors include two sons, Larry and his wife, Pat of Eugene, Oregon, Keith and his wife, Vickie of Carroll, Iowa, four grandchildren: Darcy and her special friend, Doug Dailey of Carroll, Brian and his wife, Rhonda with their daughter, Megan of Carroll, Tiffini of Ames, Iowa and Kim of Eugene, Oregon; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 27, 1999 at the United Church of Christ, Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Gordon Hoyt officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Dorothy Jessen provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Rubie Kastner singing "Beyond the Sunset" and "The Lord is My Sheperd." Pallbearers were: Ronald Kastner, Robert Kastner, Rawlo Kastner, Verdell Kastner, Charles Harm, Steven Jepsen, Dennis Bruhn and James Streck. LeRoy A. Hansohn (1919 - 2005)
LeRoy A. Hansohn was born December 1, 1919, the son of Henry and Ida Schultz Hansohn. He died Wednesday, November 23, 2005 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-five.LeRoy was born in Stockholm Township near Kiron, Iowa. He was baptized in Christ January 18, 1920 at St. John Lutheran Church, Stockholm Township and was later confirmed there on May 20, 1934. He received his education in the Stockholm #4 school, after which he began working with his father and brothers on the family farm. On February 9, 1942, LeRoy was drafted into the United States Army Air Corps and served his country until his honorable discharge on August 9, 1945. After returning home, he continued working on the family farm.
On February 8, 1949, LeRoy was united in marriage to Ima Jean Schultz at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. The couples settled on LeRoy's family farm and were blessed with the birth of five children.
In addition to farming, LeRoy served as a Crawford County Supervisor from 1974 to 1994, during which time he served on various boards. He also was a 4-H club leader for the Kiron Winners; was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Kiron, and served on their ceremony board as well as serving as grave opener, and a member of the V.F.W. Post 3930 and American Legion Post 645 of Schleswig. He was a very loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who always put his family first. For three years, LeRoy lived with his daughter, Sheila and her family, which enjoyed very much, until moving to Denison Care Center in 2003. In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially with his grandchildren, fishing, attending farm auctions, occasionally visiting the casino to play the slot machines, and socializing with his friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ima Jean in 1996; one granddaughter, Jessica Linn; three brothers: Raymond in infancy, Edward, and Walter; three sisters-in-law: Judy Hennings, Jean Hansohn, and Velma Hansohn.
He is survived by his children: Steve Hansohn and his wife; Sue of Onawa, Iowa; Sheila Launderville and her husband, Edward of Denison; Starla Steinkuehler and her husband, Jim of Dow City; Sandy Wulf and her husband, Robert of Deloit; and Shelly Pick and her husband, Robert of Jacksonville, Florida; twelve grandchildren: Jeremy Linn and his wife, Tina of Carroll; Amber Linn of Omaha; Kristine Linn of Denison; Scott Hansohn of Atlanta, Georgia; Andrea Hansohn of Onawa; Ryan and Nicholas Steinkuehler, both of Ankeny; Cody Steinkuehler of Dow City; Madyson and Emily Pick, both of Jacksonville, Florida; and Jeremy and Ashley Wulf, both of Manning; one great-grandson, Tristan Linn of Carroll; one sister-in-law, Arla Hansohn of Kiron; and two brothers-in-law, Verdeen Henningsen and his wife, Georgia of Charter Oaks; and Wayne Schultz and his wife, Betty of Denison; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 26, 2005 at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Kiron, Iowa. Rev. Mark Hansen officiated the service and grave sites rites held at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Stockholm Township, Kiron. Lois Gronau provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Jane Gronau singing "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound" and for congregational hymns "Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me" and "I'm But a Stranger Here." Honorary pallbearers were: Virgil Andersen, Eileen Heiden, Martin Spiegel and John Lawler. Those serving as pallbearers were: Nicholas Steinkuehler, Ryan Steinkuehler, Cody Steinkuehler, Scott Hansohn, Jeremy Linn and Jeremy Wulf. Military Honors were Iowa Army National Guard Co. LeRoy Christian Hennings (1918 - 1990)
LeRoy Christian Hennings was born Nov. 17, 1918, on a farm in Jackson County, Minn., the son of Hans and Anna Hadenfeld Hennings. The family resided in Minnesota until 1926, when they moved to Denison following his father's death. He received his education in the Denison Schools graduating from high school with the Class of 1939.During World War II he served his country in the United States Army with his last assignment in the Philippines. Following his discharge from the service he made his home for a time at Fort Collins, Colo. He then moved to Cheyenne, Wyo., where he was employed for many years as a mechanic for Holiday Motors and for 25 years as a bartender at the Mayflower Bar and Restaurant. LeRoy retired in 1985, and returned to Denison to care for his mother.
LeRoy died Thursday morning, July 26, 1990, at the Veterans Hospital in Omaha. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 71 years, eight months, and nine days. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cheyenne and the American Legion and V.F.W. in Cheyenne.
LeRoy was preceded in death by his father, Hans Hennings and his stepfather, Martin Lochmiller.
Survivors include three daughters and their husbands: Bonnie and Ted McAffee of Cokeville, Wyo., Janice and Jeri Hudak of Lander, Wyo., and Debbie and Dean Richardson of Cheyenne, Wyo.; eight grandchildren; his mother, Anna Lochmiller of Mapleton; one sister, Loretta and her husband, Lawrence Schleis of Mapleton; and three brothers and their wives: Andrew and Mary Hennings of Ft. Meyers, Fla.; also nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaier officiating. Music for the service was provided by the congregation singing "Just As I Am", "Rock of Ages", and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Karen Kahl served as organist. Pallbearers included Dean Richardson, Ted McAffee, Jeri Hudak, Michael Hennings, Jerry Tierney, and Jim Tierney. Graveside Military Honors were conducted by the V.F.W. Post 2504, Denison. Interment was in the Lutheran Cemetery at Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Leroy Alvin Friedrichsen (1915 - 1981)
Leroy Alvin Friedrichsen was born on a farm in Hayes Township, Ida County, Iowa, September 7, 1915, the son of Julius and Ella Schmidt Friedrichsen. He was baptized August 20, 1916, at the Friedsens Church in Schleswig. Leroy spent his early years on farms in Ida County and received his formal education at the local rural schools there. In 1931 he was confirmed into the Lutheran Faith at the Lutheran Church in Ida Grove. During his teenage years the family moved to a farm in Crawford County near Schleswig, and he assisted his father in the farm operation there.On March 11, 1939, Leroy was united in marriage with Garnet Brockmann at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. They made their home on the family farm near Schleswig and it was there they raised their daughter, Eileen. Leroy spent his entire life farming and had retired a few years ago.
He suffered a heart attack Monday, October 12, 1981, at the farm home and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison. At the time of his death, Leroy had attained the age of 66 years, 1 month, and 5 days. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig.
Leroy was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Garnet, of rural Schleswig, one daughter and son-in-law, Eileen and Marvin Streck of Schleswig, three grandchildren, Sonya, Ryan and Brent Streck of Schleswig, and one sister, Lucille, Mrs. Robert Vittitoe of Schleswig. He is also survived by other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 15,1981, at the Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison with the Rev. Theodore A Letzring of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig officiating. Comfort in music was provided by Mr. Henry Henningsen as soloist and Mrs. Benice Gronau as organist. Casket bearers included Willard Friedrichsen, Clarence Friedrichsen, Ray Gonnerman, Steven Vittitoe, Palmer Moeller, and Louis Thiede. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig.

Leroy H. Mundt (1913 - 1983)
Leroy, son of Harry and Sophie Schutt Mundt, was born June 14, 1913, near Manilla, Iowa. He graduated from the Manilla High School with the Class of 1930. During the 1930's he worked in California for the Shell Oil Company. During World War II, Leroy served with the United States Army in the Pacific. He was stationed in New Guinea and Australia.On Nov. 5, 1945, he was united in marriage with Mary Kaufman at St. Joseph's Church in Earling. After their marriage they lived in California for six months, and then came to the Manning area. Leroy worked for Fred Petersen's garage in Manning for several years, and has since been associated with the Standard Oil Company. He has operated the Standard tank wagon service for over 30 years, and has sold Standard farm service products. Leroy has been retired for seven years. He was a member of the local VFW and American Legion Posts.
Leroy has been in failing health for the past year, suffering from what is commonly called Lou Gehrig's Disease. For the past six months he has been cared for at the Manilla Manor Nursing Home, Manilla. He was transferred to the Manning General Hospital on May 9, 1983, and died there that same day at the age of 69 years, 10 months, and 25 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents; by one son Barry Ray, in infancy, and by a sister, Mrs. La Verne Jorgensen on May 1, 1983.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; and the following children: Linda (Mrs. Lowell) Stolfus of New Hampton, Janice (Mrs. Kenneth) Mickels of Omaha, Betty Fink of Deloit, Beverly Mundt of Omaha, Vickie (Mrs. Tom) Welch of Omaha, Terry Mundt, at home, Manning and Dean Mundt of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; by seven grandchildren and two brothers, Gibert of Manilla and Orville of Rogers, Ark.
Funeral services were held May 12 at Ohde Funeral Home, Manning, at 11 a.m. Officiating was Rev. Msgr. Dean Walker. Organist was Maureen Halbur and vocalist was Livie Mohr. Interment was at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Manning, with military honors. Pallbearers were Keith Weller, Marcus Mundt, Wayne Schwarte, David Kaufman, Harry Mundt and John Fromm. Ohde Funeral Home, Manning, was in charge of arrangements.

Lesetta A. (Iversen) Loeck (1919 - 1998)
Lesetta A. Loeck was born November 5, 1919, the daughter of Matthias and Amelia Schwartz Iversen. She died at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, on Tuesday, April 21, 1998 at the age of seventy-eight.Lesetta was born in Morgan Township, northwest of Schleswig, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ and later confirmed at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig by Rev. Kiehorn. As a child, she lived with her parents on a farm and received her education in Morgan No. 2 School.
After completing her education she worked as needed, doing house work, until her marriage to Raymond Loeck on September 17, 1944, in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township by Rev. Wagner. The couple settled on a farm near Ricketts, where they made their home, moving to Ricketts in 1978.
Lesetta was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and in 1945 she became a member of their Ladies Aid, serving as past president and secretary of the organization. She was a loving wife, who enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and friends. In her leisure time, Lesetta enjoyed dancing, fishing near the Minnesota border and bowling, serving as secretary of her bowling association. In her earlier years, she enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardens and was a member of several card clubs.
She is preceded in death by her parents and four brothers in infancy. Survivors include her husband, Raymond of Ricketts; one sister, Midred Schwanz of Denison; nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 24, 1998 at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Eugene Ernst officiated the service and grave site rites held at the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Hanover Township. Mary Jane (Schlieff) Klotz (1917 - 2004)
MAPLETON, Iowa - Mary Jane Klotz, 87, of Mapleton died Monday, Dec. 27, 2004, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Scott Fiege officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.Mary Jane Klotz was born in Troy, S.D., to George and Lewellyn (Diehl) Schlieff. She had a brother, George (now deceased), and a sister, Helen Petersen of Anthon, Iowa. Her childhood and school years were spent in Storm Lake, Iowa, where she later earned a teacher's degree at Buena Vista College. After teaching school for several years, she accepted a job with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington D.C. and later with military intelligence at the Pentagon during World War II.
She rode the troop train cross country to the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station in El Centre, Calif., where she married Andrew Klotz on July 8, 1944. After the war, they resided in Schleswig, Iowa, where they began their careers in the grocery business. Their children, Peggy and Bradley, were born there. With the purchase of a larger store, they moved the family to Mapleton, where they owned and operated Klotz Food Market until their retirement.
The couple enjoyed their retirement summers at their cabin at Lake Okoboji, Iowa. In 1994, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary there. After Andy's death on Dec. 26, 1994, she continued to live from spring until fall at the lake, planting her large vegetable garden and spending time with her many friends before returning to Mapleton for the winter.
She is survived by a son and his wife, Brad and Shirley Klotz of Plano, Texas, and their boys and their wives, Jason and Heather Klotz and John and Natalie Klotz and their daughters, Avery, all of Allen, Texas; a daughter and her husband, Peggy and Rob Whitset of Newran, Ga. and their four children, Leslie and her husband, Bill Davenport of Austin, Texas, Kate and her husband, Mike Wallace of Little Rock, Ark., Jamie Hunt of Lincoln, Neb., and Holly Hunt of Washington D.C.
She nurtured us with her love and caring, her food and friendship and though we will each miss those special moments we've spent with her through the years, we rejoice in knowing that she is now peacefully in her heavenly home.

Robert William Ludwig Johannsen (1912 - 1986)
Robert William Ludwig Johannsen was born on June 3, 1912 in Ida County, Iowa the son of Carl R. and Alvina Else Johannsen. He died Wednesday morning, April 23, 1986 at his home in Charter Oak at the age of 73 years, 10 months, and 20 days. Robert spent his childhood years in Ida County. He received his formal education in the Grant Township School.Robert was united in marriage to Edna Jurgensen on June 24, 1934 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. They made their home on a farm near Battle Creek for a number of years. They later moved to a farm near Charter Oak. During his years of farming, Robert also worked as a carpenter. Robert and Edna moved to Charter Oak in 1981 following retirement from farming. Robert served two years as president of the St. John's congregation and also served another two years as vice-president. He served as Elder for thirteen years, was a member of the L.L.L. and was also a member of the Charter Oak Community Club.
Preceding Robert in death were his parents, his son Burdett, his daughter Charlene, and his sister Helen.
Survivors include his wife Edna of Charter Oak; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law Mabel Hennings and husband Earl of Denison; four nieces; four nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 26, 1986 10:30 a.m. at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. Interment was in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery near Charter Oak. The Rev. L.C. Gebhardt and Vicar Steven Hulke officiated at the services and graveside rites. The St. John's Ladies' Choir with Mr. Art Beeck as organist provided music for the services. Hymns for the services included "Heaven Is My Home" and "How Great Thou Art." Serving as pallbearers for the services were Valgene Hennings, Verdeen Hennings, Verle Hennings, Dale Reese, Roger L. Johannsen, and Erwin Voss. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Charter Oak.

Viola Rose (Schwenn) Kunze (1911 - 1991)
Viola Rose Kunze was born Aug. 13, 1911, the daughter of Robert and Augusta Hintz Schwenn, on a farm near Ricketts, Iowa. She died Friday, Aug. 23, 1991 at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Whiting, Iowa at the age of 80 years.Viola grew up on the farm and received her education in the Hanover Lutheran School. She was baptized a Christian, and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in 1926 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hanover.
In her youth, she worked in various positions in the area until she was united in marriage to Otto Kunze on Oct. 4, 1938. The couple settled on a farm near Charter Oak, where they raised four children. They spent their lives on the farm working together and raising their family. Viola was a devoted wife and mother who worked hard to care for her family's needs. In her spare time, she enjoyed socializing in various clubs in addition to quilting and gardening. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak and was involved with various church activities.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Otto in 1963. Survivors include her children: Byron Kluver of Whiting, Vertus Kluver and his wife, Mary of Mapleton, Otto R. Kunze and his wife, Ila Jane of Ute, and Judean Kunze and his wife, Margaret of Runnells; 15 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Leona Lill of LeMars, Dorothy Jepsen and her husband, Edward of Charter Oak; and one brother, Duane Ackelbein of Ricketts.
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 26 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, with Pastor L.C Gebhardt and Vicar Patrick Sparling officiating the service and grave side rites held in the Garden of Gethsemane at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Mrs. Angela Gebhardt served as organ accompanist for the St. John's Ladies Choir singing the selections "Abide With Me" and "My Hope is Built on Nothing Less." Walter Peter Ketelsen (1916 - 2003)
Walter Peter Ketelsen was born December 16, 1916, the son of John and Tina Schroeder Ketelsen. He died Sunday, May 18, 2003 at his home in Charter Oak, Iowa at the age of eighty-six.Walt was born on a farm near Charter Oak and received his education at a rural school near his home and parochial schools. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak.
On July 8, 1939, Walt was united in marriage to Eldora Meggers. The couple made their home on a farm near Charter Oak and were blessed with the birth of five children. Along with farming, Walt did custom baling and worked at the Dunlap Livestock Auction for several years. They retired and moved to Charter Oak in 1983, where Walt lived until the time of his death. Walt was a lifelong devoted member of St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, and the Charter Oak Community Club. He was a loving husband and caring father who enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. In his leisure time, Walt enjoyed fishing and woodworking.
Walt was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Donna in 1996, and two sisters, Alice Lorensen and Laura in infancy. Survivors include his wife, Eldora of Charter Oak; three sons, Phil Ketelsen and his wife, Jolene of Mapleton; Larry Ketelsen and his wife, Jan of Charter Oak; Rick Ketelsen and his wife, Rhonda of Denison; one daughter, Janice Miller and her husband, Gene of Denison; son-in-law, Leo Jacobsen of Walnut; eleven grandchildren, Walt Jacobsen and his wife, Kim; Steve Jacobsen and his wife, Mary; Deb Jacobsen; Susan Leek and her husband, Brandon; Brian Ketelsen and his wife, Renata; Tina, Joan and Cindy Ketelsen; Derek, Nathan and Abby Ketelsen; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Alma Preul of Denison, formerly of Charter Oak; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 21, 2003 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Eugene Ernst officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. Paul Cemetery, Charter Oak. Marjorie Neddermeyer provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," "I'm But a Stranger Here" and "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound." Pallbearers were: Harold Lorenzen, Darrell Ketelsen, Lee Stence, LeRoy Nemitz, Bob Preul and Bob Kroll. A Prayer Service was held at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 20, 2003 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.

Mathilda Louise (Mesenbrink) Meeves (1912 - 1974)
Mathilda Louise Meeves, daughter of Henry and Anna Mesenbrink, was born August 13, 1912, near Ricketts, Iowa. She received her schooling in Rockwell City, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood, and on December 17, 1943, she was united in marriage to Jerry L. Meeves, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Since that time, they made their home in Denison, Iowa, where she lived at the time of her passing.Mrs. Meeves passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 1974, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, after reaching the age of 62 years, 1 month and 5 days.
She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, Jerry, one son, Alvin of Coloma, Mich.; one brother, George Seibert, of Genoa City, Wisc.; five sisters, Mrs. Frieda Lingle, Mrs. Sophia Naab, and Mrs. Rose Berner all of Denison, Iowa; Mrs. Anna Zerkie of Rockwell City, and Mrs. Lillian Johannsen, of Sterling, Ill. Six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Henry and one sister, Alma.
Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Maschke, officiating. Soloist was Henry Henningsen accompanied on the organ by Mrs. Fred Rabe. Burial was in Crawford Heights Memory Garden, Denison. Pallbearers were Andrew Thomsen, Meinhardt Jaacks, Richard Holihan, Gordon Knights, Ray Lownes and William A. Boyens.

Robert Raymond Rath (1910 - 2003)
Robert Raymond Rath was born August 9, 1910, the son of John H. and Katherine Jurgensen Rath. He died Monday, February 10, 2003 at the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of ninety-two.Robert was born in Denison, Iowa and was baptized in Christ on January 24, 1911 at St. Peter's Church in Washington Township. He was confirmed on March 28, 1926 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Robert received his education at a rural school near his home and Zion Lutheran School in Denison. After completing his education, he worked for his father on the family farm and also in 1929 for a construction company that was paving Highway 59.
On June 2, 1935, Robert was united in marriage to Garnet Langer. The couple rented a farm from Robert's father which they later purchased and he farmed there his entire life. Robert was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. He loved farming always doing his best to raise good crops and cattle. He enjoyed fishing and relaxing in their cabin in Canada and visiting with his friends and neighbors. Robert never really retired. Last fall at age ninety-two, he still ran the combine harvesting all the crops.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Anne Lurene in 1942, one sister, Clara Weller, three brothers, Herbert, Werner and Walter Rath, four half-brothers, Henry, Otto and Rudolph Rath and Carl Bundy, also two half-sisters, Frieda Jedele and Elsie Schoening.
Survivors include his wife, Garnet of Denison; a son, Jack Rath of Denison; two sisters, Gertrude Christensen and Carmen Beermann, both of Denison; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 14, 2003 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Oakland Cemetery in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art," "I'm But a Stranger Here" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Those serving as pallbearers were: Harold Beermann, Walter Beermann, Jeff Sievertsen, Everett Miller, Randy Rath, Phil Blum and Mervin Arnold. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Dorcas Society. Violet Adeline (Krohnke) Grell (1910 - 1993)
Violet Adeline Grell was born January 26, 1910, the daughter of George and Anna Tech Krohnke. She died on Monday, December 27, 1993 at the Terrace Gardens Nursing Home in Wichita, Kansas at the age of eighty-three years.Violet was born on a farm near Schleswig, Iowa and received her education in rural schools near her home. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig.
On April 1, 1931, Violet was united in marriage to Albert Grell at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. The couple settled in Ricketts where her husband owned and operated a service station and bulk delivery business. They were blessed with three children. She subsequently received her high school education and diploma as an adult. Her Christian heritage was very important to her and she was devoted to her Lord and Savior through her church. She was a charter member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts and was deeply involved with Christian education in the church through confirmation and Sunday School. She was a member of St. Luke's Ladies Aid, serving as president of the organization in addition to other offices, and was a member of the LWML and served as president of the Denison Zone.
She became a Braille transcriber and through correspondence taught the skill to others throughout the United States. For her work, she was formally recognized by the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Violet enjoyed bowling, fishing, gardening and entertaining her family. She had a special talent for writing poems.
After the death of her husband, Albert in 1979, Violet remained in her home in Ricketts until 1986 when she moved to the Eventide Senior Housing in Denison where she remained until 1992 when she moved to the Eventide Nursing Home as a consequence of ill health. In June of 1993, Violet moved to the Terrace Garden Health Center in Wichita, Kansas to be nearer her family.
Violet was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Albert; one infant son, Richard in 1933; one granddaughter, Julie Elizabeth in 1982; and four brothers: Jerry, Walter, Erhardt, and Wayne.
Survivors include: two sons, Deane and his wife, Peggy of Wichita, Kansas; Lyle and his wife Marlys of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; three grandchildren, Lindy Grell and her husband, Gerald White of Inger, Minnesota; Wendy Grell of Denver, Colorado; Cary Grell of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and three great-grandsons, Sam Landry, Zagajiiw, and Raining Albert. Also surviving is one sister, Irene Johannsen of Schleswig; two brothers, Everett Krohnke and his wife, Shirley of Crescent Lake, Oregon and Cecil Phillips of Ute, Iowa.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Friday December 31, 1993 at the St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts, Iowa with Rev. Donald Winterrowd officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison, Iowa. Marlene Lee provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "The Lord's Prayer" and "Amazing Grace" and congregational hymn "My Faith Looks Up to Thee". Pallbearers were: Roger W. Johannsen, Dr. K.M. Johannsen, Wayne Kuhlmann, Robert Schreiber, Kenneth Baak and Cary Grell. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them for lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Warren M. Whited (1914 - 1986)
Warren, son of George and Tessie Whited was born Feb. 26, 1914, near Arion in Crawford County, Ia. He was educated in rural schools near his home. He died Aug. 28, 1986, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital. At the age of nine he was baptized in the First Baptist Church of Denison and remained an active lifelong member.On Feb. 14, 1934 he was united in marriage at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison to Hilda Rath. To this union nine children were born. They made their home in and around Denison until Hilda's death in July of 1955.
On Jan. 18, 1960, he was united in marriage to Gertrude McCullough in Council Bluffs. Warren and Gertrude resided in Denison and then in Deloit until her death in Aug. 1983.
On Dec. 23, 1984, Warren was united in marriage to Joyce Hagge at the First Baptist Church in Denison. They made their home in Deloit. Warren's many occupations included farming, trucking, gardening and for many years he was a service man for Marten Appliances. Eventually he was self-employed as a service man.
Warren died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on Aug. 28, 1986, at which time he had attained the age of 72 years, six months and two days.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Burton and John, two sisters, June Whited and Hazel Thurber, one daughter, Mrs. Arlene Bolken, one son Jesse McCullough and two grandchildren.
Warren is survived by his wife, Joyce, of Deloit; one sister, Mrs. Tena Crouch of Denison, seventeen children: Delores - Mrs. Robert Slater of Denison, Irene Stone of Theodosia, Mo., Gale and his wife Joleen of Denison, Donna - Mrs. Larry Stone of Schleswig, Ruby - Mrs. Al Kimmen of Theodosia, Mo., Jerry of Denison, Judy - Mrs. Cecil Clayton of Gainesville, Mo., Yolanda - Mrs. Fred Sherburn of Wrightwood, Calif., Mr. L. E. Bolken, a son-in-law, Denison, Patricia - Mrs. Warren Thies of Ute, Myrle McCullough and his wife Dora of Fall River, Kan., Theresa - Mrs. Robert Symington of Huntington Beach, Calif., Elizabeth - Mrs. James Wonderly of Grand Island, Neb., Mary Kay Thompson of Calera, Okla., Kevin Hagge of Westside, Michael Hagge of Arcadia, Randall Hagge of Arcadia and Brenda Hagge at home. Forty-one grandchildren and thirty-nine great-grandchildren, and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Aug. 30, at the First Baptist Church in Denison. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery. The Rev. Warren Wilson officiated at the services. Mrs. Wilbur Petersen served as organist with Henry Henningsen as soloist. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers were: Dr. James L. Flood, Carl Lorenzen, Ralph Marten and John J. Murphy. Serving as pallbearers were: Ray Bacon, Mark Bilsten, Dennis Marten, Dick Mendlik, Doug Haase and Bob Segebart. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

May Lou (Clausen) Wellendorf (2000 - 2000)
May Lou Wellendorf was born May 23, 1911, the daughter of Paul and Emma Kunze Clausen. She died Sunday, June 25, 2000 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison at the age of eighty-nine.May Lou was born on the home farm in Willow Township, near Charter Oak, Iowa and was baptized in Christ, on the third day after her birth in her family farm home. She received her education in a rural school near her home and was confirmed on April 5, 1925 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak by Pastor Amstein. After her high school graduation with the class of 1929, May Lou enrolled at the Lutheran Hospital Nurses Training program in Sioux City, Iowa, later graduating as a Registered Nurse with the class of 1932.
On November, 8, 1933, May Lou was united in marriage to Herman Wellendorf at the Morningside Lutheran Parsonage in Sioux City. The couple settled on a farm near Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of one son, Howard. The couple remained in Schleswig until 1945, at which time they moved to Clear Lake, Iowa where the couple operated a rooming house for patients of the Chappel Clinic. In 1963, the couple moved to Denison where May Lou took care of her mother, Emma Westphalen at her home in Charter Oak.
May Lou loved her work as a nurse and throughout her life, was complemented numerous times for the wonderful care she gave others. She also enjoyed sewing, reading, gardening, and was very involved with her position as a 4-H instructor. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-father, Detlef Westphalen; her husband, Herman Wellendorf; her twin sister May Belle; three brothers, William, Fred and Vernon Clausen, two step-sisters, Matilda Clingenpeel and Amelia Brown and one step-brother, Ethef Westphalen.
She is survived by her son, Howard and his wife, Gloria of Fort Madison, Iowa; five grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 29, 2000 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa. Rev. Robert Sleister (1919 - 1996)
Robert, son of Hero and Mabel Fuller Sleister, was born December 6, 1919, on a farm near Manilla, Iowa. He attended Greeley #1 rural school and continued his education at Manilla High School, graduating with the class of 1936. After graduating, Robert began farming where he was born.On November 9, 1940, Robert was united in marriage with Betty Hansen. Six children, David, Larry, Paulette, Dennis, James, and Kathy, were born to this union. Robert lived his entire life on the farm where he was born raising hogs for over 40 years and maintaining a dairy herd. He remained active in farming until his unexpected death. After a brief hospitalization, Robert died Saturday afternoon, March 9, 1996, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines at the age of 70 years, 3 months, and 3 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Russell Sleister, Floyd Sleister, and Bernard Sleister; and a grandson, Ryan Hammer.
Survivors include his wife, Betty, of Manilla; his children David Sleister and his wife, Priscilla, of Exira; Larry Sleister and his wife, Patricia, of Guthrie Center; Paulette and her husband, Raymond Hammer, of Omaha, Nebraska; Dennis Sleister, of Warwick, Rhode Island; James Sleister and his wife, Sheila, of West Burlington; and Kathy and her husband, Wayne Oliver, of Lees Summit, Missouri; 15 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Thelma Campbell, of Harlan and Helen and her husband Bob Maki, of Seattle, Washington, a brother-in-law, Charles Hansen and his wife, Marline, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; a special cousin and friend Robert Fuller, since childhood: a special neighbor, Bruce Gollobit; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Robert was a member of the United Methodist Church in Manilla where he taught Sunday school and served on the church board. He was awarded the Iowa Farmer Degree by the state FFA, and was recognized for his soil conservation practices by Shelby County Conservation Corps in 1978. He enjoyed reading and politics and in later years enjoyed cooking.
Robert's family was most important to him and he was happiest when they were near him. He was proud of his children's and grandchildren's achievements. Robert was a caregiver, not only to his relatives, but to his wife's. He cared for his wife after she had a stroke and was still insisting on preparing the meals. Since Betty didn't drive, she couldn't have been as active in church work if he hadn't always encouraged her to, and been willing to drive her.
Services were held Thursday, March 14, 1996, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Manilla, Iowa. Officiating the service was Reverend Kenneth Ritchie. Music was provided by vocalist Milton Barry and organist Ruth Ann Barry for selections "One Day At A Time" and "His Eye Is On The Sparrow." Interment was in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Irwin, Iowa. Casket bearers were Phil Dvorak, Steve Vogel, Mike Blum, Dick Hansen, Eugene Sleister, and Bruce Gollobit. Honorary casket bearers were Alvin Sleister, Don Sleister, Dick Sleister, Hal Sleister, Charles Hansen and Eldon Sleister. The family wishes to express their gratitude for your kindness evidenced in thought, word and deed.
