Mangnus C. Wellendorf (1909 - 1992)
Mangnus C. Wellendorf was born on March 16, 1909 on the family farm in Hayes Township, Ida County, Iowa, the son of Emil and Mary Brockman Wellendorf; and died on Friday, May 1, 1992 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of 83 years.Mangnus was baptized as an infant and later confirmed at the Friedens Evangelical Church in Schleswig, Iowa. He attended country school and the Ida Grove Community School. After his education he farmed with his parents on the family farm in Hayes Township.
On January 6, 1932 Mangnus was united in marriage to Erma Henningsen of Schleswig, at the the Friedens Evangelical parsonage in Schleswig. Together they settled on a farm near Vail where they made their home for the past sixty years. To this union one daughter, Ruth was born.
Mangnus was a loving and caring husband and father who worked hard providing for his family. He loved farming and fishing and working with wood. He was a long time member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.
Mangnus was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Ruth Walde who died Nov. 12, 1989; and one brother, Fred.
He is survived by his wife, Erma; one son-in-law, Leonard Walde of Vail; two sisters, Ella Schelldorf of Holstein, la. and Iona Thraen and her husband, Laverne of Omaha, Neb.; also one brother, Elmer Wellendorf of Deloit; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 4, 1992, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, with Pastor Kurt Kaiser and Pastor Philip E. Bloch officiating the service and graveside rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Henry Henningsen singing, "How Great Thou Art" and "You'll Never Walk Alone" and congregational singing hymn "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Pallbearers were Dick Hugg, Glen Wellendorf, Joe Schierbrock, Gerald Beck, Roger Meehan and Mario Henningsen. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home in Denison.

Marcus B. Wodtke (1909 - 1990)
Marcus B. Wodtke, 81, of Mapleton died Sunday, Sept. 30, 1990, at a nursing home in Mapleton. Services were at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, near Charter Oak. The Rev. Bob Hines officiated. Burial was in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation was after 2 p.m. Tuesday with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at Walter Funeral Home in Mapleton.Mr. Wodtke was born April 27, 1909, in Soldier Township, north of Charter Oak, the son of Frederick and Mathilde (Fester) Wodtke. He attended Parochial School at Immanuel Lutheran. He was baptized on May 23, 1909 and later confirmed April 13, 1924 at Immanuel.
He married Edna Teut on Aug. 3, 1933, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The couple farmed five miles east of Mapleton until 1953, when they moved to the home farm. They farmed there until 1974 when they moved into Mapleton. Mrs. Wodtke died March 20, 1985.
Mr. Wodtke was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, where he was a voting member and held various offices. He served on the Cooper Township school board and was a director of the Farmer's Co-op at Mapleton.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Marlene and Don Bohlmann of Omaha and Jolene and Phil Ketelsen of Mapleton; two sons, Verdell of Charter Oak and Delbert and his wife, Rita of Sioux City; two sisters, Clara Kroll and Helma Engelke, both of Mapleton; two brothers, Martin of Mapleton and Leonhard of Anthon; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one daughter, Janice and his wife.
Pallbearers were Mark Bohlmann, Matt Grabowski, Eric Wodtke, Joel Wodtke, Gary Wodtke, Dale Engelke, Larry Ketelsen and Ron Kuhlmann.

Margaret (Winey) Cose (1908 - 1999)
Margaret Winey Cose was born at Deloit, Iowa May 25, 1908 the daughter of Arthur and Anna Eliza Anderson Winey. She received her education in local rural schools and was graduated from Denison High School. She continued her education and received her teaching certificate after completing Normal Training School in Denison.On August 15, 1940 Margaret was united in marriage with Mervin Cose at Denison, Iowa. Their union was blessed with one daughter, Susan. They made their home in Deloit and later Audubon, Iowa moving to Denison in 1947. Margaret taught in rural schools and the Denison Community Schools for many years before retiring in 1973. Following her teaching career she was employed at Norelius Community Library, retiring in 1988.
Margaret was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Denison and the Denison Retired Teachers Association.
On September 25, 1999, due to failing health, Margaret moved to Des Moines, Iowa to be near her daughter, Susan. Margaret died at her daughter's home in Des Moines Monday, October 25, 1999. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 91 years and 5 months.
Including her parents Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Mervin on September 17, 1988, four sisters Ruby Wellendorf, Loyal Atkinson, Gladys Winey and Lucille Mason, and one brother, Delmer Winey.
Survivors include one daughter Susan Beutel and her husband Robert of Des Moines, two grandsons, Mark Beutel of Lake Villa, Illinois and Dale Beutel and his wife Amber of Rockford, Illinois, one brother LeRoy "Bud" Winey and his wife Clara of Denison, two sisters Mildred Yeager and husband, George of Des Moines and Carmen Doty and husband, Wayne of Bella Vista, Arkansas, several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Memorial services were held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 1, 1999 at the First United Methodist Church in Denison, Iowa with Rev. Joseph R Boysen officiating. Music for the service was provided by Karen Kahl on the organ. Selections included "Amazing Grace" and "Near To The Heart Of God". Private interment was in the Deloit Cemetery at Deloit, Iowa. Memorials have been established to the First United Methodist Church or Norelius Community Library. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Marie E. (Berndt) Carstensen (1906 - 1990)
Marie E. Carstensen, the daughter of Fred C. and Freida Kunze Berndt, was born Aug. 31,1906 in Denison, and died Sept. 26, 1990 at the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Neb., at the age of 84 years.Marie grew up on a farm near Denison and received her education in the Zion Lutheran School in Denison. After her education, she helped on the family farm until May 16, 1926, when Marie and Raymond H. Carstensen Sr. of Denison, were united in marriage in Denison.
This union was blessed with five children. Marie and Raymond made their home on the Carstensen family farm in Milford Township, retiring from the farm in 1958 and moving to Denison. Marie began work as a nurses aid at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital and Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, a job she held until she retired in 1978. Marie was baptized Jan. 17, 1907 and confirmed April 9, 1922 in the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and was a member of the church.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Raymond H. Sr., on Jan. 8, 1985; one son, Raymond H. Jr.; two brothers, Carl Berndt and Walter Berndt; and one sister, Esther Norris.
Her survivors include her children: Delphine Braase of Manilla, Norma Smith of New Hope, Minn.; Vernon L. Carstensen of Denison and Robert E. Carstensen and wife, LeAnn of Marion. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one brother, William Berndt of Riverside, Calif.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Pastor Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services with interment in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Mrs. Karen Kahl was organist and Henry Henningsen was soloist. The solo selection was "How Great Thou Art" and the congregational hymn was "I'm But a Stranger Here." Serving as pallbearers were William Barnes, Alan Carstensen, Dale Carstensen, David Carstensen, Dennis Carstensen, Timothy Carstensen and Michael Waskosky. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Service in Denison.

Marie (Otto) Suhr (1908 - 1992)
KINGSLEY, Iowa - Marie Suhr, 84, of Kingsley, died Monday, June 8, 1992, at a Sioux City nursing home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Dickison-Michaelson Funeral Home in Kingsley, with the Rev. Art Hermanson officiating. Burial will be in Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig with the Rev. James Schatz officiating. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.Mrs. Suhr, the former Marie Elizabeth Otto, was born Jan. 15, 1908, at Denison, the daughter of Herman and Mary (Holtman) Otto. She moved with her family to Owatonna, Minn., and later returned to the Denison area.
She married John A. Suhr March 22, 1927, at Carroll. The couple lived in the Denison/Schleswig area, where he worked as a mechanic. They moved to Kingsley in 1983. He died in 1983. Mrs. Suhr was a member of the Golden Circle Group in Kingsley.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Kenneth and Marjorie of Kingsley and Jack and Joye of Sioux City; five grandchildren, Connie Thomas, Sherry Suhr, Becky Amundson, Cindee Van Meter and Mindee Gaskell; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Otto; two sisters, Selma Maloney and Hattie Meeves; and a grandson, Jerry.

Olga (Kogol) Patchin (1916 - 2006)
Olga Kogol Patchin, a former long time resident of Deloit, Iowa, was born on September 9, 1916 in Chicago, Illinois, to John and Tatiana Kaplar Kogal.She died Friday, November 24, 2006 at Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine, Iowa, at the age of 90. She had seven younger sisters and one older brother.
She attended Wells High School and quit in her junior year to work as a domestic and later worked in a furniture slipcover factory until her marriage. She attended the Russian Evangelical Church and the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago as a young woman and sang in the choir. She also worked in a booth at the 1933 Worlds Fair.
She met Lonald Ellsworth Patchin at a skating rink where she asked him to be her partner in a ladies' choice. Lonald was in the Army Air Corp stationed in Chicago at the Stevens Hotel. They married on January 23, 1943 and moved to Eagle Pass, Texas, where Lonald was stationed and Olga worked in the PX. After the war they moved to Schleswig, Iowa for a few years and then to Deloit.
Lon and Olga had four children: Laura and husband Mark Westermeyer of Woodbine; Lonald and wife Jan of Schleswig; Eileen Patchin (deceased); and Sandra Ohlund of Harlan. There are five grandchildren: Scott and Susan Patchin of Suffolk, Virginia; Greg and Patricia Patchin of Fort Collins, Colorado; Christy Schurke of Chandler, Arizona; Michelle Schurke of Omaha, Nebraska; and Grant Ohlund of Harlan, Iowa. There are also five great-grandchildren.
Lon and Olga always did gardening together and sold sweet corn and other vegetables from their home in Deloit. She also enjoyed working in her flower beds. She worked as a waitress for many years at several restaurants and in the kitchen at the Red Lantern Steak House. She enjoyed sewing, reading, cooking, shopping, and traveling to visit her family in Chicago and Culver City, California. She enjoyed going to events in which her children and grandchildren took part. She was a 60 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary post 690 of Deloit and was a member of the RLDS/COC Church of Deloit and later Denison, Iowa. In late 2004 Lon and Olga moved to Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine. Lon passed away in March of 2005.
Olga was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter Eileen; her husband Lonald; sisters and brother-in-law Vera and Art Heide of Chicago, Illinois; Anne Janus also of Chicago; Mary and Alexandria as children; Helen Kogol of Chicago; a brother Michael and wife Katie, also of Chicago; and brother-in-law Robert Meyer of Culver City, California. Two sisters remain: Florence Meyer of Culver City, California, and Wanda and her husband Walter Bafia of Chicago, Illinois.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 28, 2006 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. Elder Royl Roden and Elder Mark Westermeyer officiated the services and grave side rites held at the Deloit Cemetery in Deloit, Iowa. Organist Jane Roden provided the organ accompaniment for vocalists Carrie Morris and Sheila Reitan as they sang, "The Old Rugged Cross," and for the congregational hymn, "The Old, Old Path." Those serving as honorary pallbearers were Michelle Schurke and Christy Schurke. Those serving as pallbearers were: Sherm Higginbottom, Lloyd Mathies, Greg Patchin, Allen Johnson, Scott Patchin, and Grant Ohlund. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch at the Community of Christ Church served by the Community of Christ Women's Department. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Otto Bernhard Backhaus (1915 - 1970)
Funeral services for Otto Backhaus were held Saturday, November 7 (1970), at the Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. F. A. Wiese officiating. Mrs. Ray Schmidt was organist. The choir sang "For Me To Live Is Jesus" and the congregation sang "I Am But A Stranger Here".Otto Bernhard, son of Carl Backhaus and his wife Clara nee Schumann was born in Grant Township on February 25, 1915. He was baptized in Trinity Lutheran Church, Grant Township. Confirmed at Immanuel, Schleswig. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church most of his life.
In 1941, he moved to the West Coast where he worked in one of the defense plants manufacturing planes. After the war, he came back home and farmed the homeplace four miles west of Schleswig. For a number of years, he has been living at Escondido, California during the winter where he was in the real estate business. During the summer months, he lived the past six years with his sister Gertrude Ernst, where he did part time farming.
He unexpectedly died of a heart attack on Thursday afternoon near his sister's farm while driving the pickup truck. He was preceded in death by one brother who died in infancy.
Survivors include the following sister and brothers: Gertrude Ernst of Schleswig, Lucille, wife of Vern Kruse of Denison, Fern, wife of Alvin Stier of Schleswig, and Carl of Aurelia, and thirteen nieces and nephews. He attained to 55 years, eight months, and ten days.
Pallbearers were Freddie Backhaus, Edwin Backhaus, Fred Jacobs, Harry Streck, Gereld Meeves, and Fred Blume. Interment was in the Grant Cemetery.

Otto Evers (1891 - 1965)
Funeral services were held for Otto Evers Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. at the Maxwell Funeral home with Rev. Carl Schmidt officiating. Hymns were sung by the Lutheran ladies choir with Mrs. Fred Rabe as the organist.Otto Evers, son of Wulf H. Evers and Caroline W. Wiedemann, was born July 14, 1891 in Clinton county, Grand Mound, Ia. In 1892 the family came to Crawford county, lived around Schleswig for a time, and then moved west of Denison in Paradise township.
On Feb. 10, 1915, he was united in marriage to Louise Christiansen. To this union three children were born, Raymond L. of Arion; Vera, who died on March 4, 1959, and Irene, Mrs. DeOrr Cose of Maurice. They farmed in Paradise township 35 years until they moved to Denison in 1950.
He died on Jan. 25.(1965) He was preceded in death by his daughter, Vera, his parents, three brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, one son, Ray, one daughter, Irene, six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Gus Wachter of Sioux City and Mrs. Dean Hain of Denver, Colo.
Interment was in Morgan township cemetery in Schleswig.

Otto Jahn (1887 - 1969)
Otto Jahn, son of Carl and Bertha (Krause) Jahn, was born Feb. 18, 1887 in Hanover township, Crawford county. In early infancy he was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran church in Hanover township.He lived on farms in Hanover township, in South Dakota before coming to live in Denison. The past four years of his life were spent at the Boeck Rooming house where he died March 7.(1969)
He was married to Lula Plough who survives him along with three daughters, Mrs. Esther Champion of Omaha, Mrs. Erma Aldag of Schleswig and Mrs. Eileen Peters of Denison, 12 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and one great great grandchild, one brother, Bernhard of Sioux City; four sisters, Mrs. Bertha Mesenbrink of Windom, Minn., Mrs. Anna Marten and Mrs. Minnie Hopp of Denison and Mrs. Mathilda Rabe of Charter Oak. Four sisters and a brother preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran church on March 10, with the Rev. C. W. Schmidt officiating. Hymns were sung by the Lutheran Ladies Quartet with Mrs. Fred Rabe serving as organist. Interment was in the Lutheran cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Ronald Aldag, Edward Champion, Richard Champion, William Aldag, Marten Champion and Murlin Champion.

Otto Friedrich Rath (1891 - 1988)
Otto Friedrich Rath, the son of John and Elise Schroeder Rath, was born on June 28, 1891, in Nishnabotna Township, Crawford County, Ia., and died on Nov. 18, 1988, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, at the age of 97 years.Otto grew up on the family farm and attended rural schools in Washington Township, Crawford County. He assisted with the farming until he and Emma Arndt of Buck Grove were united in marriage on Sept. 11, 1912. This union was blessed with two daughters. After marriage they farmed in Washington Township until retiring, and moved to Denison in 1953.
Emma died on March 25, 1972, and Otto continued to live in his home until entering Denison Care Center in Denison on Aug. 23, 1986. He enjoyed working the land for the welfare of his family, being ever devoted to them. After retiring, he enjoyed maintaining his yard.
Otto was baptized in the family home on June 18, 1893, and later confirmed on April 8, 1905, at St. Johannis German Lutheran Church in Washington Township. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison at the time of his death, where he had served as an elder.
Preceding Otto in death were his parents; his wife Emma; three brothers and one sister; also three half brothers. Surviving him are his two daughters: Erma and her husband, Harry Meggers of Denison, and Wilma and her husband, Harold Burmeister of Sioux City; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Elsa Schoening of Norfolk, Neb.; three half sisters: Clara Weller of Correctionville, Gertrude Christensen of Denison, and Carmen and her husband, Edward Beermann of Denison; one half-brother, Robert Rath and his wife, Garnet of Denison; and one sister-in-law, Myrtle Rath of Denison.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 21, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Pastor Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services with interment in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Mrs. Karen Kahl was organist for Henry Henningsen, soloist, and congregational singing. Selections were "How Great Thou Art," "Just As I Am" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Serving as pallbearers were Ray Burmeister, Kenneth Early, Robert Jaacks, Arlen Petersen, Wesley Rath and John Rath. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Otto Emil Schultz (1897 - 1974)
Funeral services for Otto Schultz were held Wednesday, April 24, 1974, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, with Rev. F.A. Wiese officiating. Mrs. Ray Schmidt was the organist. The Immanuel Lutheran Ladies Choir sang "There Is An Hour of Peaceful Rest" and the congregation sang "Rock of Ages".Otto Emil Schultz, son of Herman Schultz and his wife Bertha Huebner, was born in Hanover Township on June 26, 1897. There he grew up. He was married to Louise Jurgensen on February 15, 1925. The couple farmed in Soldier Township. Later they moved to Schleswig where Otto was in the implement business. He returned to farming in 1931 where he remained until 1952 when he retired and moved to Schleswig. The past few years his health has not been very good, and he died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on Sunday evening, April 21. He attained to 76 years, 9 months and 25 days.
He was a life long member of the Lutheran Church. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's, Hanover Township, and was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig, for over a quarter of a century. He served on the Church Board for 12 years.
He is survived by his widow Louise of Schleswig, one daughter Charlene, wife of Gerald Pedersen of Schleswig, and three grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Herman Kuhlmann of Charter Oak, and Mrs. Erma Wisneski of St. Cloud, Minnesota, and one brother, Alfred of Charter Oak.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters, Leonard and Herman, Adela and Minnie.
Pallbearers were: Beryl Garrett, Oran Kuehl, Donald Schultz, Milford Schultz, Al Jorgensen and Alfred Kuhlmann. Interment was in Morgan Township Cemetery, Schleswig.

Otto William Kunze (1897 - 1963)
Otto William Kunze was born May 25, 1897 to Henry William Kunze and Maria Sophie Rodewald Kunze. He was baptized the same year by Pastor August Matthews on Oct. 3. He was later confirmed by Pastor A. Amstein.He was married to Frieda Riessen. To this union three children were born. They were LaVerna, Una Bell and Donald.
On Oct. 3, 1937, he was united in marriage to Viola (Schwenn) Kluver. To this union two children were born, Otto Robert and Judean.
Mr. Kunze lived in this community all of his life, mostly as a farmer. He was stricken with a stroke Sept. 8, which caused his death Sept. 16.(1963) He reached the age of 66 years, 4 months and 9 days. Both parents and two brothers, Henry and William, are also deceased.
Among the survivors are the following: the widow, his five children, LaVera, Mrs. Gerald Davis, of Onawa, Una Belle, Mrs. Arthur Buller of St. Charles, Ill., Donald Kunze of Wood River, Ill., Otto Robert Kunze of Charter Oak, Judean Kunze of Des Moines and ten grandchildren. Also one brother, Fred, of Charter Oak, two sisters, Minnie Harm of Denison and Mrs. Anna McQuire of Charter Oak.
Funeral services were held in the St. John's Lutheran church in Charter Oak, Sept. 18, at 2 p. m. Words of comfort were given by Rev. O. R. Schlegelmilch. Music was by William Ziesmer. Pallbearers were Frank Lorensen, Arthur Naab, Adolph Schau, Roy Schrader, Ranklin Weed and Louie Wellner. Interment was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens, Garden of Gethsemane.

Paul Fredric Pobanz (1928 - 2006)
Paul Fredric Pobanz was born March 29, 1928, the son of Frederick and Sophie Dersien Pobanz. He died Monday, February 20, 2006 at his home in Denison, Iowa at the age of seventy-seven.Paul was born in Denison, Iowa, and lived in the Denison and Deloit area all of his life. He entered the United States Army on May 7, 1952, served his country during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on May 6, 1954.
On October 10, 1961, Paul was united in marriage to Jane Morrow. The couple were blessed with the birth of four children: Earl, Don, Keith and Louise. Paul worked numerous jobs over the years including farming, trucking, packing plant, and several other farm related jobs.
Preceding him in death were his parents and one brother-in-law, Lionel Ehlers.
Survivors include three sons, Earl Pobanz and his wife, Christina of Lincoln, Nebraska; Don Pobanz and his wife, Lauri of Hastings, Nebraska; Keith Pobanz and his wife, Jeri of Grand Island, Nebraska; one daughter, Louise Pobanz of Kirkland, Washington; his loving companion, Opal Stommel of Denison and her daughter, Kathy Howell and her husband, Michael, of Leavenworth, Kansas and her son, Robert Stommel of Dallas, Texas; twenty-nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Christine Ehlers of Bronson, Iowa; three nephews, Lonnie, Larry and LaVern Ehlers; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 28, 2006, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. Don F. Pobanz officiated the service with burial at the Deloit Cemetery. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns, "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound," and "How Great Thou Art" and special service music "Love Me" was played. Paul Johannsen (1892 - 1962)
Paul Johannsen, son of Johannas and Johanna Johannsen passed away on March 21 (1962) at the Crawford county memorial hospital in Denison.Mr Johannsen was born June 21, 1892 in Goodrich Township and reached the age of 69 years and 9 months. He retired from in the 1940's due to ill health.
Mr Johannsen was united in marriage to Avis Paup of Denison on May 1, 1961. Survivors include his wife Avis; four children by a previous marriage: Vernetta (Mrs Reiney Steinkuehler of Harlan), Vera May (Mrs Wayne Hogencamp of Fullerton, California), Violetta (Mrs Jim Jones of Fullerton, Calif.) and Val Jean of Kiron; four sisters: Minnie of Schleswig, Mahala (Mrs August Peterson of Denison), Emma (Mrs Walter Schultz of Kiron) and Bertha (Mrs Al Stone of Cedar Rapids); one brother, Carl of Schleswig; four step-sons; 14 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Preceding Mr Johannsen in death were his parents, two sisters: Lena and Sena; one brother, Johannas and one grandson.
Funeral services were held on March 23, at the First Baptist church in Denison with words of comfort by Rev. M. C. Carstensen of Harlan. Interment was made in the Oakland cemetery. The following were pallbearers: Elroy Hansen, John Petersen, Rowland Petersen, Herbert Johannsen, Irvin Schultz and Reynold Johannsen.

John Elmer Judy (1879 - 1965)
John Elmer Judy, son of Isaac Judy and his wife Mahala nee Biggleman, was born in May of 1879 in Seemly, W. Va., where he also grew to manhood. At the age of twenty, he came to Crawford County and here on Dec. 15, 1901 he was married to Anna Krueger. They farmed in Stockholm township for some eighteen years, then moved to their farm in Goodrich township where they resided until 1944 when they came to live in Denison.Mr. Judy became seriously ill last May. The closing months of his life were spent at Saunder's Rest home where he passed away on the night of Dec. 7th. (1965)
Mr. Judy affiliated with the Lutheran Church by the rite of confirmation. His funeral service was held at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison on Jan. 11 with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Hymns were sung by the Lutheran Ladies Choir with Mrs. Fred Rabe serving as organist. Pallbearers were: Kenneth Aldag, Ervin Keesling, Edward Peters, Earl Keesling, Wayne Keesling, David Rameden.
His death is survived by his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Edna Keesling of Denison; two sons, Lester of Denison and Eston of Sioux City; six grandchildren and five step-grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren; one brother, Jacob Judy, of Rough Run, W. Va. One granddaughter, one great-granddaughter. Four brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

John Friedrich Bielfeldt (1897 - 1962?)
NOTE: Year of death not given on newspaper article.The Morgan Cemetery list has a John F. Bielfeldt born 1897, died 1962.Funeral services for John F. Bielfeldt was held Friday afternoon at the Zion Lutheran church with Rev. Carl Schmidt officiating. He died at his home west of Denison on June 12.
John Friedrich Bielfeldt was the son of Claus Bielfeldt and his wife Catharine, nee Joens, and was born June 28, 1897 in Van Buren. In early infancy he was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Denison. On Aug. 18, 1918, he was wed to Adelheid Pautsch, a union to which seven children were born. After their marriage they farmed in Hanover Township until 10 years ago when they came to make their home in Denison.
Survivors are his widow, three sons, Emil of Dow City, John Jr. of Arion and Glen of Charter Oak; three daughters, Mrs. Ruth Jess of Schleswig, Mrs. Ruby Sass of Ida Grove and Mrs. Fern Held of Hinton. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Christine Kruse of Denison and Mrs. Eva Michaelsen of Holstein. He was preceded in death by one brother, Jurgen, one son, Bernhard and one sister, Minnie.
Interment was made in the Morgan Township cemetery with the following acting as pallbearers Harold Engelking, Verne Kruse, Orville Nathlich, Lloyd Pautsch, Donald Ullrich and William Ullrich.

John F. Droegmiller (1891 - 1968)
John F. Droegmiller, 76, 2301 S. St. Aubin St., died Friday morning at a Sioux City hospital following a long illness.Mr. Droegmiller was born in Hanover Township, Crawford County, Nov. 12, 1891. He farmed in Crawford County until 1945 when he moved to Sioux City.
He was a veteran of World War I, the Eagles Lodge, and was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include one brother, William of Sioux City; two sisters, Miss Ida Droegmiller of Sioux City and Mrs. Clara Neddermeyer of Cherokee, Iowa. The body was taken to the W. Harry Christy Funeral Home in Morningside.

John Fredrick Schmidt (1895 - 1972)
Funeral services for John F. Schmidt were held Monday, September 25, 1972, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig with the Rev. R.J. Ratzlaff officiating. Mrs. John Evers was the organist. Mrs. Ernie Grell and Mrs. G.M. Johnson sang "In the Garden" and "Just As I Am".John Fredrick Schmidt was born in Crawford County, Iowa to Carl F. Schmidt and his wife Wilhelmina Rahn on January 5, 1895. He passed away after a lingering illness on September 22, 1972, having reached the age of 77 years, 8 months and 17 days.
On January 23, 1918, he married Erna Friedrichsen here in Schleswig, with the Rev. Wetzler officiating. They farmed in Otter Creek Township until moving to town 26 years ago. They observed their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1968.
Besides his wife, he is survived by nieces, nephew, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother.
Pallbearers were Ray Kruse, Ray Schmidt, Ralph Reincke, Louie Kastner, Francis Quandt and Wilbert Johannsen. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery.

John Gosch Sachau (1875 - 1967)
John Gosch Sachau, son of Jacob Sachau and his wife, Wiebke nee Dethmann, was born March 29, 1875 in Washington township, Crawford county where he also grew to manhood.He was married to Minnie A. Jepsen on Feb. 26, 1901, a union to which four children were born. After their marriage they resided on farms in the Deloit area until retiring to Denison in 1940.
Mr. Sachau was taken to the Denison hospital on Dec. 14 and died Jan. 3 (1967) at the age of 91 years.
He is survived by his widow, two sons, Louis of Lincoln, Neb, and Harry of Denison; two daughters, Mrs. Dolly Pautsch of Los Angeles and Mrs. Maxine Schmidt of Denison; seven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; three sisters, Emma Koenck of Wall Lake, Anna Thoms of Sioux City and Tena Bumann of Danbury. Four brothers, Henry, Hans, Fred, and August preceded him in death as well as one sister, Mary Dethlefsen.
His funeral service was held on Jan. 7 at the Maxwell Funeral home with Rev. C. W. Schmidt officiating. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist with singing by the Lutheran Ladies Choir. Interment was made in the Morgan township cemetery with the following as pallbearers, Alvin Dixon, Earl Hintz, Arlo Jensen, Delbert Sachau, Curtis Sachau and Lodean Schmidt.

John H. Evers (1902 - 1972)
Funeral services for John H. Evers were held Monday, July 3, 1972, at 10:30 a.m. at The United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Rev. R.J. Ratzlaff and Rev. A.F. Rinne officiated. Miss Becky Ratzlaff, organist, accompanied Mrs. Harlan Buffum and Mrs. G.M. Johnson as they sang "In The Garden" and "The Lord Is My Shepherd".John H. Evers was born to C. John Evers and his wife, Louise nee Mason, in Otter Creek Township, Crawford County, Iowa, on August 4, 1902. He was baptized by Pastor Emil Hansen in 1907 and confirmed in the faith by Pastor Wetzler in 1918.
He married Malinda Mohr on June 6, 1926, in Schleswig with Pastor W.G. Mauch officiating. The Evers lived in Onawa for three years and in Sioux City two years, the rest of the time here in Schleswig. He had been a dealer for Texaco Oil for thirty years before his retirement.
Mr. Evers passed away at St. Luke's Hospital, Sioux City, at 9 p.m. Thursday, June 29, 1972 having reached the age of 69 years, 10 months and 25 days.
Mr. Evers had served the community and church for many years. At the time of his passing he was president of the United Church of Christ and at the 65th anniversary of the congregation received recognition for having sung in the choir for over 50 years. He was a member of the building committee for the church.
In the church he had served as Sunday School superintendent some years ago, as secretary of the congregation and council, he held all offices at one time or another in the Men's Brotherhood, a delegate to state synod meetings and national church meetings. He was a member of the Pairs and Spares organization of the church and was chairman of numerous committees of the church from time to time, including the Property, Executive Finance committees of the council.
Many of the community projects completed in the past years had the full hearted support and effort of Mr. Evers. Most recently he served as General Manager of the Schleswig Golf Club, a member of the Community Club, the Businessmen's Club and the Schleswig Enterprise Corporation.
He was active in fraternal organizations including the Masonic Lodge at Denison, the Scottish Rite Lodge at Sioux City, the Abu Bekr Shrine at Sioux City and The White Shrine Lodge at Ida Grove.
Mr. Evers is survived by his wife Malinda, two sons Everett of Schleswig and Gene of Cincinnati, Ohio, two daughters-in-law May Lou Evers and Sally Evers, six grandchildren, a brother Bernhard Evers of Des Moines, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services for John Groth were held Friday, January 8, 1971 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig with Rev. R.J. Ratzlaff officiating. Mrs. Gunner Johnson and Mrs. Earnie Grell sang "Old Rugged Cross" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus". Mrs. John Evers was the organist.John Henry Groth, son of Christopher Groth and Maggie Peters, was born July 15, 1890. He was married to Hilda Petersen at Denison, Iowa on February 16, 1916.
Mr. Groth has been a resident of this community since 1944 and was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. He passed away at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on January 5, 1971 following a brief illness. He attained to 80 years, 5 months and 20 days.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Survivors include his wife, Hilda; one daughter, Eleanor, Mrs. Johannes Breckling; one grandchild and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were: Harry Groth, Wilber Groth, Arnold Peterson, Herman Miners, Arlo Jensen, Willie Luth and Walter Maack. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery.

John Heinrich Spahn (1877 - 1964)
Funeral services for John Spahn were held Wednesday, February 26th at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. The choir sang "This Body In The Grave We Lay" and the congregation sang "Rock Of Ages." They were accompanied on the organ by Mrs Ray Schmidt. Rev. F. A. Wiese read the following obituary:John Heinrich Spahn, son of Jurgen and Dorthea Spahn was born February 17th, 1877 at Clinton, Iowa. His parents moved to Fulton, Illinois when John was seven weeks old. At the age of seven years, the family moved to Hayes Township, Ida County. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Grant Township.
March 19, 1902 he was married to Ida Burk. He moved with his wife to Schleswig in 1910 from a farm in Woodbury County. In Schleswig he was in various businesses including the implement business. After the death of his wife, he made his home with his son, Arthur in Storm Lake. He died there Monday afternoon, February 24.(1964)
He is preceded in death by his wife Ida, who died December 19, 1962. He is survived by his sons: Arthur of Storm Lake and Raymond of Edwardsville, Illinois, four grandchildren, one brother Ed Spahn of Mapleton. Three sisters, Mrs Minnie Abbe of Battle Creek, Mrs Mary Andresen of Ida Grove and Dora, wife of William Krueger of Saugus, California.

John Johnson (1891 - 1972)
Funeral services for John Johnson, 80, were held Friday morning, February 25, 1972, at Sinn's Funeral Home in Schleswig, with the Rev. Ira Williams of Lake View officiating.John Johnson was born July 4, 1891, at Falkoping, Sweden, the son of August and Anna Marie Johnson. He came to America in 1910 at the age of 18. He came to Arthur, Iowa to work for Elmer Skarin, who was engaged in farming. Mr. Johnson farmed many years north, west and south of Schleswig. In 1952, he retired and moved to Schleswig. He passed away on February 22, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital after a two-week illness. He attained to 80 years, 7 months and 18 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Gilbert of Ida Grove, who died in 1967.
Survivors include: two sisters Agnes Larsen of Waukesha, Wisconsin and Tokla Johnson of Sweden, one brother Carl of Sweden, nieces and nephews and his housekeeper Martha Quade, who was with him since 1922.
Pallbearers were: Ray Kruse, Hans Kuehl, Fred Miller, Roy Jensen, Ralph Reincke and Vernon Christiansen. Interment was in Morgan Cemetery.

John Mathias Kluver (1882 - 1965)
Funeral services for John Mathias Kluver, who died at the Battle Creek Hospital on March 9, were held on Thursday, March 11, 1965 at the United Church of Christ. Mrs Harlan Buffum and Mrs Don Meyer sang, "Asleep In Jesus" and "Nearer My God To Thee." Mrs Broder Petersen accompanied them on the organ. Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff officiated.John Mathias Kluver, son of Carl Kluver and Henrietta Stoedt was born on September 26, 1882 in Germany. He was a resident of the Schleswig community for 61 years. He farmed southeast of town before retiring and moving to Schleswig. He lived with his brother, Carl, in Mapleton the past year.
He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. He was baptized and confirmed in Germany. He attained the age of 82 years, 5 months and 13 days.
He is survived by two brothers, Carl of Mapleton, August of Charter Oak and one sister, Dora Proise of Appleton, Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Emil, Henry, and Jacob and two sisters, Hannah and Wilhelmina.
Burial was made in the Morgan Cemetery. The pallbearers were: Harry Jess, Peter Pickel, Robert Bumann, John H. Gosch, Herbert Miller and C. H. Claussen.

Marie Katherine (Hoist) Kruthoff (1908 - 2007)
Marie Katherine Kruthoff was born May 5, 1908, the daughter of Max and Amelia Christiansen Hoist. She died Thursday, April 12, 2007 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-eight.Marie was born in Arion, Iowa and was baptized in Christ, June 14, 1908 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and later confirmed there on April 9, 1922. After completing her education she helped at home.
On December 4, 1929, Marie was united in marriage to Walter Kruthoff at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison by the Rev. William Frese. The couple made their home on a farm near Denison and were blessed with the birth of two children.
Marie was a life-long devoted member of Zion Lutheran Church, where she was a charter member of Dorcas and an active member of the Ladies Aid. She also taught Sunday School for several decades, which included thirty-three years of perfect attendance. She loved caring for her family, cooking, vegetable and flower gardening. In her leisure time she enjoyed quilting, crocheting, and crafts at church. She also enjoyed several Ladies Club and Card Clubs.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Walter, a daughter-in-law, Irene Kruthoff and two brothers, Fred and Elmer Hoist.
Survivors include two sons, Dale Kruthoff of Denison; David Kruthoff and his wife, Georgia of Bay City, Texas; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Anna Dethmann of Denison; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 17, 2007 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the services and grave side rites held at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Organist Karen Kahl provided accompaniment for the congregational hymns "The Old Rugged Cross," and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Soloist Eldon Hardekopf sang "How Great Thou Art." Those serving as pallbearers were Matthew Kruthoff, Mark Kruthoff, Carl Kruthoff, Jeff Ahrenholtz, John Kruthoff, and Joshua Biffar. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them for fellowship and lunch served by the Dorcas Society.

Marie (Grell) Kropf (1905 - 1994)
Marie Kropf, the daughter of Mathhius and Alvena Carstens Grell, was born June 15, 1905 on a farm in Goodrich Township, Iowa. She died at the Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa, December 16, 1994 at the age of eighty-nine years.Marie grew up on the farm and was baptized in Christ on August 6, 1905 and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St, John's Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township, Iowa. She received her education in a rural school near Boyer, Iowa.
On December 22, 1926, she was united in marriage to Henry Kropf at the Zion Lutheran personage in Denison. The couple farmed near Deloit until 1931, when they moved to Deloit where they owned and operated a filling station until 1967. In 1974, Henry died and Marie was subsequently employed at Eventide and then at the Red Lantern Steak House in Denison.
On October 18, 1976, Marie was united in marriage to Manford Knudsen at Faith Lutheran Church in Deloit where they made their home.
Marie was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Deloit, where she taught Sunday School for many years and was a charter member of their Ladies Aid Society. She enjoyed fishing at Lake View where she and Henry had a home during the summer season,
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Henry; husband, Manford; three sisters: Emma Lehmann, Edna Cram and Dorothy Scheer.
Survivors include two sisters, Jeannette Johnson of Mapleton and Betty Paulson and her husband, Pete of Deloit; two brothers, Arnold Grell and his wife, Velma of Homick and Freddie Grell and his wife, Vonnie of Danbury and several nieces and nephews.

Marie (Kollbaum) Prussing (1908 - 1996)
Marie Prussing was born August 30, 1908, the daughter of Fred and Rose Trinkleback Kollbaum. She died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison on Wednesday, May 1, 1996 at the age of eighty-seven.Marie was born on the Peter Meyers farm in Soldier Township near Battle Creek where she grew up. She received her education in Soldier #2. After completing her education, Marie did house work for various families in the area.
On October 16, 1929, she was united in marriage to Henry Prussing at the Zion Lutheran parsonage in Denison by Rev. William Frese. The couple settled on a farm south of Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of one son. They remained on the farm until retiring in 1968 when they moved to Denison. In 1978, Henry died and Marie remained in their home until moving to Eventide in December of 1995.
In her leisure time, Marie enjoyed crocheting, especially for the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition, she enjoyed baking and was an excellent cook, dancing, country music and playing marbles. She enjoyed watching the Statler Brothers and other TV game shows.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and was a loving caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was devoted to her family and cared for them with diligence.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry, five sisters: Viola Kollbaum, as a child, Irene Johnson, Hilda Paulsen, Mable Christians and Margaret Wissink; also five brothers: Fred, Ray, John, Marvin and Alvin; and one great-grandson, Derek.
She is survived by her son Wilbert and his wife, Julia of Charter Oak; seven grandchildren: Roger Prussing and his wife, Linda; Darla Neubauer, Rhonda Lopez and her husband, Higinio; Cathy Ray and her husband, Steve; Cheryl Hardy and her husband, Dennis; Doug Prussing and his wife, Kelli, and Lana Sliefert and her husband, Michael. Also seventeen great-grandchildren; three sisters, Esther Lackman and her husband, Bernard of Denison; Dena Nemitz of Denison; and Rose Nielsen and her husband, Melvin of Ida Grove; and several sisters and brothers-in-law.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 4, 1996 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Pastor Kurt Kaiser and Vicar Andrew Carlson officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Larry Boeck singling "On Eagle's Wings" and congregational hymns "Asleep in Jesus" and "I Know that My Redeemer Lives". Those serving as pallbearers were: Bernard Lackman Jr., Richard Kollbaum, Charles Lackman, Kenneth Boger, Jack Neumann and Larry Johnson. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. Marie (Justice) Vernon (1902 - 1991)
Marie Vernon was born on a farm in Goodrich Township near Denison, Iowa, July 15, 1902, the daughter of Eugene and Margaret Purcell Justice. She received her education in the local schools and was graduated from the Denison High School.Following high school, Marie taught in the rural schools in Hanover Township for thirteen years. She then attended Boyles Business College in Omaha, Neb. from which she graduated in 1936. After graduating she worked in the real estate business for Max Kropf in Denison and later at the Crawford County Courthouse in both the County Attorney's Office and the County Treasuer's Office.
On Jan. 3, 1944, Marie was united in marriage with Edward F. Vernon at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, and they made Denison their home in 1950, Marie began working for Crawford County Social Services and remained there until her retirement on Jan. 1, 1963.
Edward died Oct. 5, 1969, and Marie continued to spend her retirement years at her home in Denison. She entered the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, April 7, 1989 until May 31, 1989, when she returned to her own home. She returned to Eventide Sept. 7, 1989 where she had since resided.
Marie died early Sunday morning, December 22, 1991 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospial in Denison. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 89 years, 5 months and 7 days.
When health permitted, Marie was an active member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, St. Rose Ladies Guild, Catholic Golden Age, and an Auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary. Other memberships enjoyed by Marie included American Legion Auxiliary, Crawford County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and A.A.R.P.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Those left to cherish her memory in their hearts include five children, Ed Vernon and wife Yoshie of Santee, Calif., James Vernon and wife Mary of Tempe, Ariz., Mary and husband Doug Jacobsen of Lake View, and Margaret Meidlinger and Patricia Vernon, both of Council Bluffs; 17 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren, and one half brother, Dale Justice of Scottsbluff, Neb. Also surviving are other relatives and a host of friends.
A Legion of Mary Rosary was held at 4 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 26, 1991, at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison followed by a Christian Wake Service at 7:30 p.m. with Father Lloyd W. White officiating. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Dec. 27, 1991, at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, with Father Lloyd W. White as Celebrant. Music for the Mass was provided by the St. Rose of Lima Adult Choir directed by Pat Menegay with organ acccompaniment by Jean Cornelius. Selections included "Be Not Afraid" and "Ave Maria." Honorary bearers were Emmett Fitzpatrick, Leo Fitzpatrick, Vincent Keating, Jack Murphy, Lowell Maynard, Alfred Meidlinger, Melvin White, Leo Hanrahan, Pat Houston and Paul Molony. Martha Louise (Prussing) Jacobs (1903 - 1974)
Martha Louise Jacobs of Denison, daughter of Jergen and Ida Remcke Prussing, was born March 16, 1903 on a farm in Morgan Township, near Schleswig and died December 6, 1974 at Bishop Bergern Mercy Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 71 years.She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith, and attended Parochial School in Grant Twp., Ida County.
On December 11, 1924, she was united in marriage to William A. Jacobs in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs settled on a farm near Schleswig and continued farming until 1956 when they retired and moved to Denison. For the past several years Mrs. Jacobs has devoted her time and energies to taking care of elderly people.
She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband, William and a brother, Henry of Denison.
Funeral Services were held at 2:00p.m. Monday, December 9, 1974 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, with Reverend Robert Maschke officiating. Pallbearers were William Brockmann, Donald Clausen, Fred Jacobs, Edwin Rusch, Elmer Rusch, and Kenneth Streck. Interment was made in Crawford Heights Memorial Gardens, with Huebner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Martha M. (Goerner) Seils (1901 - 1989)
Martha M. Seils, the daughter of Franz and Emma Lipsky Goerner, was born near Onawa, Ia., on Oct. 3, 1901, and died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on Sept 6, 1989, at the age of 87 years.Martha moved with her family to the Charter Oak area and attended the St. John's Lutheran school in Charter Oak. She helped in the family home as well as other homes after her education.
On March 15, 1922, she and Emil Seils of Charter Oak were united in marriage in her parents home in Charter Oak. This union was blessed with one daughter. After their marriage, they farmed in Soldier Township near Ricketts, until moving to Charter Oak in 1946.
Emil died in 1981, and Martha continued to live in her home until May of 1984, when her health failed and she entered Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison.
Martha was baptized as an infant at Soldier Township Lutheran Church and later confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. She was a long time member of St. John's Lutheran Church as well as being a member of the Ladies Aid.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Emil; two brothers; six sisters and one great-grandson.
Survivors include her daughter Vernet and her husband, Victor Bohlmann of Jefferson; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Carl Schreiber of Ricketts, Herman Schreiber and his wife, Ruth of San Diego, Calif.; and one sister-in-law, Doris Schreiber of California.
Funeral services were held on Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. Pastor L.C. Gebhardt officiated at the services with interment in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery near Charter Oak. Mrs. L.C. Gebhardt was organist for the church choir. Selections were "Be Still, My Soul" and "Abide With Me."

Marvin Albert Baker (1909 - 1989)
Marvin Albert Baker, the son of Charles and Amelia Schurke Baker, was born on July 9, 1909, near Kiron, Ia., and died on Nov. 13, 1989, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Ia., at the age of 80 years.Marvin grew to manhood on the family farm near Kiron, and attended a rural school, later attending the Zion Lutheran School in Denison. After his education, he helped on the farm.
On Feb. 15, 1933, he and Vernette Grell of Schleswig, Ia., were united in marriage at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township. This union was blessed with two children. Marvin and Vernette farmed until retiring in 1983, when they moved to Kiron. They had the honor of celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house.
Marvin was baptized on Aug. 8, 1909, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township and confirmed on April 13, 1924, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. He was a long time member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township, where he held various offices. He was also associated with the ASCS office in Crawford County for many years. His pastime was playing organ music.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one grandson, Ryan Baker and one sister-in-law, Hilda Baker.
Survivors include his wife, Vernette of Kiron; his children: Marlyn and her husband, Verdell Kastner of Denison and Melvin and his wife, Jeanine Baker of Kiron; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two step-great-granddaughters; one step-great-great-grandson; three brothers, Herbert Baker of Denison, Earl Baker and his wife, Vera of Kiron and Raymond Baker and his wife, Goldie of Kiron.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township. Rover end Kilmer Hafner officiated at the services with interment in Morgan Cemetery at Schleswig. Lois Gronau was organist and Henry Henningsen was soloist. Solo selections were "Be Still My Soul" and "Nearer My God To Thee." The congregational hymn was "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Serving as pallbearers were Trent Baker, Mark Kastner, Troy Baker, Duane Zimmer, Dan Kuhlmann and Tom Hibbing. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Marvin Dethlef Kahl (1909 - 1975)
Marvin Dethlef Kahl of Charter Oak died Friday, March 7, 1975 at the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Nebr., having reached the age of 65 years, 7 months and 3 days.Mr. Kahl was the son of John and Wiebke (Ploog) Kahl, born Aug. 4, 1909 on a farm in Otto Creek Twp. near Schleswig. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith, attended rural schools, and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Charter Oak.
After his marriage to Lucinda Rath of Denison, Feb. 24, 1935 he was employed by Crawford County several years. Mr. and Mrs. Kahl made their home in Denison later moving on farms near Charter Oak. To this union three daughters and two sons were born-one son died in infancy. February, 1974 Mr. and Mrs. Kahl retired to Charter Oak due to Mr. Kahl's ill health.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant son, one brother, Otto, three sisters, Amanda, Alma and Marie, one infant brother and sister.
Survivors include his wife Lucinda, one son, Darold of Denison, three daughters, Janice, Mrs. Daniel Throckmorton of Charter Oak, Linda, Mrs. Robert Brown and Leola Kahl of Omaha, Nebr., eight grandchildren, three brothers, Herbert or Ricketts, John of Mapleton, William of Arion, several other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held March 11, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak with Pastor Albert Prouty officiating. Mrs. Paul Clausen served as organist and the St. John's Womens Choir sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Heaven is My Home". Interment was made in the Lutheran Cemetery, Charter Oak. Pallbearers were Louie Kelm, Elmer Schultz, Emil Bielfeldt, James Schultz, Ralph Vogt, Elmer Kutschinski. Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of services.

Marvin Herman Schultz (1907 - 1979)
Marvin Herman, son of Fritz and Emelia Lutz Schultz, was born June 27, 1907, in Otter Creek Township, Crawford County. He attended the rural schools in Morgan Township in Crawford County and has farmed in Crawford County since that time.He was united in marriage with Olga Plahn Hansen on July 10, 1949. They farmed about three miles west of Manning where Max died suddenly Jan. 6, 1979, at the age of 71 years, 6 months and 9 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents, by two sisters, Mrs. Anna Detlefsen and Mrs. Marie Schurke, by five brothers, Fred, William, Herman, Ed and Emil in infancy.
He is survived by his wife, Olga, by one brother John Schultz of Denison and one sister, Roma, Mrs. Henry Friedrichsen, as well as other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Jan. 9 at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Officiating was Pastor Edward F. Heinicke. Organist was Dorothy Kusel. Interment was in the Manning Cemetery. Pallbearers were Wayne Schultz, John Schultz, Freddie Friedrichsen, Donald Friedrichsen, Dale Voilstedt and William Brus. Ohde Funeral Home in Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Marvin Zage (1908 - 1999)
Marvin Zage was born November 20, 1908, the son of Bernard and Dora Jepsen Zage. He died Thursday, September 2, 1999 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety.Marvin was born on the home farm in Hanover Township where he grew up, and received his education in a rural school near his home. He was baptized in Christ, May 21, 1909, by Rev. C. Runge, and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, January 8, 1926 at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison, by the Rev. William Frese. After completing his education, he worked on the farm with his family.
On May 11, 1957, Marvin was united in marriage to Leila Petersen by Rev. Elmer Widmann, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The couple settled on the home farm where they lived until moving to Schleswig in 1967. He subsequently worked for farmers lumber and grain for 5 years before retiring.
In his leisure time, Marvin enjoyed fishing and socializing with his family and friends over a game of cards. He loved his home and family; and was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig.
Marvin is preceded in death by his parents, one brother Fred Zage and one sister, Adela Holtman.
Survivors include his Wife, Leila of Schleswig, one daughter, Donna Neumann and her husband, Ralph of Florence, Colorado; one granddaughter, Kori Neumann of Manitou Springs, Colorado; one sister-in-law, La verne Zage of Denison; and a very close friend and member of the extended family, Elnora Petersen of Schleswig.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, September 7, 1999 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", "I'm But a Stranger Here" and "My Faith Looks Trustingly". Those serving as pallbearers were: Gerald Langholdt, Dr. D.L. Schmidt, Chad Petersen, Lorenz Schultz, Larry Beeck and P.J. Moeller. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. Hedwig L. (Jensen) Pautsch-Shrak (1902 - 1992)
Hedwig (Mary) L. Pautsch Shrak was born on August 31, 1902 the daughter of Charles F. and Minnie Garbe Jensen. She died on Wednesday, June 17, 1992 at the Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake, Iowa at the age of 89 years.Mary was born on a farm near Deloit, Iowa and received her education in a rural school near her home and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. After receiving her education, Mary studied to be a seamstress and was subsequently employed in the Denison area.
On February 20, 1924, Mary was united in marriage to Herbert Pautsch of Denison. The couple were blessed with the birth of four children, and settled in Crawford and Sac Counties where they farmed until their retirement in 1956 when they relocated to California and managed motels in Long Beach and Seal Beach.
In 1970 Herbert died and Mary remained in California to live, and was later united in marriage to Frank Shrak. After the death of Frank, Mary occupied her free time traveling and enjoying the sights of other parts of the world.
Four years ago, Mary returned to Wall Lake, Iowa where she enjoyed the final years of her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one child who died at birth; her first husband, Herbert and her second husband, Frank; one brother, Harold C. Jensen; one sister, Edna Jensen; and one step-brother Earl Hintz.
Survivors include: one daughter, Normadine Vogel of Wall Lake; and two sons, Bob and his wife, Marjean of Tustin, California and Roger and his wife, Patrician Ann of San Luis Obispo, California. Also seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Lucinda Hunt of Seal Beach, California; one half-sister, Lenora Jensen and her husband, Glenn of Manning; two stepsisters, Irene Hintz of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Leona White of Warren, Michigan. Other survivors include one stepbrother, Vern Hintz and his wife, Hazel of Denison and one sister-in-law, Julia Jensen of Denison.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 20, 1992 at the Peace Lutheran Church in Wall lake, Iowa with Pastor Roger Carlisle officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Roland Erickson provided the organ accompaniment for the Peace Lutheran Choir singing "What A Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Abide With Me! Fast Falls the Eventide." Pallbearers were: Reginald Vogel, Kenneth Powell, Keith Jensen, Reed Vogel, Justin Vogel and Tim Dorr. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home in Denison.

Matthew William Wolfe (1901 - 1982)
Matthew William Wolfe was born April 12, 1901 near Denison, the son of Matthew F. and Mary Brosnahan Wolfe. He died Wednesday, Jan. 27 (1982), at St. Joseph Hospital, Omaha, at the age of 80.Matt spent his early years on a farm in Denison Township. Later in 1905, his family moved to Spencer, Neb. After the death of both his mother and father in 1910, Matt returned to Iowa, where he was educated. He furthered his education by attending college in Quincy, Illinois. Before marriage, Matt began a career in farming. He farmed with his brother for a time before each were married.
On February 16, 1933, Matt was united in marriage to Ameila DeConnick. Together they made their home on a farm near Denison. In 1936, they moved to a farm near Kiron, where Matt continued to farm all of his life.
In addition to his parents, Matt was preceded in death by his wife Ameila in May of 1979, and two brothers, Father Morris Wolfe and Edward Wolfe.
Survivors include one son, William of Hampton; two daughters, Mary (Mrs. Duane) Brown of Browndeer, Wis., and Joan (Mrs. Gene) Kotz of Kiron; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother, Emmett of Hastings, Neb. and four sisters, Sister Joan of Arc of Dubuque, Mrs. Irene Lyman of Omaha, Mrs. Loretta Wellington of Cicero, Ill. and Mrs. Julie McCarron of Dubuque.
Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 30, at 2:30 p.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. Burial was in St. Rose of Lima Cemetery. Father Allan Reicks and Father Lloyd W. White officiated at the Mass. Serving as pallbearers were Dale Zimmer, Donald Kluver, Leonard Keating Jr., Jim Jurgens, Vincent Wolfe and Clement Wolfe.

Maurine S. (Miller) Asmus (1905 - 1996)
Maurine S. Asmus was born on April 12, 1905, in Denison, Iowa, the daughter of William and Mamie (Hanson) Miller. She died on Sunday, March 3, 1996, at the Brookings Hospital at the age of 90 years.Maurine spent her early years and received her education in Zion Lutheran School in Denison.
She was united in marriage to William Asmus on August 20, 1926, in Carroll, Iowa. They came to Brookings County in 1941 and farmed south of Aurora, South Dakota, until moving into Aurora in 1953. William died on December 4, 1954, in Brookings, South Dakota, and , Maurine moved into Brookings in 1961. While in Brookings, Maurine babysat for many years for several families and was also employed in the Food Service Department at the Brookings Hospital and South Dakota State University.
She entered Brookview Manor in October of 1990. She was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church and the ladies' aid and enjoyed crocheting and playing cards.
She is survived by one son, Alvin Asmus and his wife, Eleanor of Mitchell, South Dakota; three daughters, Arlene Kurtz and her husband, Ken of Brookings, LaVon Lane and her husband, Brian of Flandreau, South Dakota, and Lois Teal and her husband, Roger of Brookings; 25 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Frieda Hopp and Mrs. Edna Wolffe, both of Denison; one step-son, Loren Asmus of Redding, California; one brother, Marvin Miller and his wife, Ardell of Lake Benton, Minnesota, and one sister, Leona Lutterman and her husband, Henry of Brookings.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Mary Ann; three sons, Harold, Dewaine, and Erwin; three stepsons, Bill, Marvin, and Alfred, and two brothers, Roy and Bill Miller.
Services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, 1996 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Brookings, South Dakota. Serving as Clergy was Reverend Richard Townes, Jr. Cordus Behrend served as organist for soloist Bonnie Limmer singing "Nearer My God To Thee" and congregational hymns "Lift High The Cross", "Ye Watchers and Ye Holy One" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus." Pallbearers were Harold Asmus, Mike Asmus, James Lane, Rick Mason, Darwin Miller and Scott Teal. Interment was in the Greenwood Cemetery in Brookings, South Dakota.

Mayme E. (Riley) Osterlund-Winey (1901 - 1987)
Mayme E. Osterlund Winey was born on February 17, 1901 in Lawrenceviile. Illinois, the daughter of William and Jane Withrow Riley. She died on Friday, March 20, 1987 in Council Bluffs at the age of 86 years, one month and three days.Mayme spent her early years on (he family farm near Lawrenceville, Illinois. She received her early childhood education in a rural school. Mayme and her family moved to Iowa in the spring of 1920 and settled on a farm near Vail.
On September 11, 1920. Mayme was united in marriage to Walter Osterlund of Vail. Together they made their home on a farm near Vail. On February 14, 1938 Walter passed away and Mayme and her children moved to Deloit.
On February 21, 1947 she was united in marriage to Raleigh Winey of Deloit. Together they made their home on a farm near Deloit until his death on September 9, 1953. Mayme later moved to Denison where she lived until the time of her death.
Mayme was a long time member of the United Presbyterian Church of Denison; the Olive Branch No. 205 Order of the Eastern Star, Vail; member of the Past Presidents of the V.F.W. Auxiliary.
In addition to her parents, Mayme was preceded in death by her first husband, Walter Osterlund on February 14, 1938 and Raleigh Winey on September 9, 1953; one son Lloyd on July 28, 1924; two sisters Clara Riley and Nellie Mae Franzek; and one granddaughter.
Survivors include her children, Bill Osterlund and his wife Betty of Council Bluffs; Duane Osterlund of Wentzville, Missouri; Betty Jean. Mrs. Gene Coulthard of Texas City, Texas; Joyce, Mrs. Robert Tellgren of Crescent, and LaRoyce. Mrs. Herb Riley of Tucson, Ariona. Two sisters: Eleanor. Mrs. Henry Olderog of Denison and Esther, Mrs. Earl Andresen of Denison. Thirteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday, March 23, 1987 at 11a.m. at the United Presbyterian Church in Denison. Burial was in the Vail Cemetery. The Rev. James D. Cobb officiated at the services. Mrs. Roy Voggesser served as organist with Mrs. Richard Dueland as soloist. Eastern Star Service was held at 7:30 p.m. Sundav. March 22. 1987 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison by the Order of the Eastern Star Olive Branch No. 205 of Vail. Serving as pallbearers were Robert Andrese, Kevin Andresen, Pat Byrnes, Robert Hargens, Gerald Osterlund and Roy R. Osterlund. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Meinhard H. Feddersen (1906 - 1996)
Meinhard H. Feddersen was born February 3, 1906, the son of Johannas and Maragaret Hansen Feddersen. He died at the Dunlap Care Center in Dunlap, Iowa on Monday, February 12, 1996 at the age of ninety.Meinhard was born in Husum, Germany, where he received his education first receiving his education in elementary school and continuing with four years of blacksmith school. In 1926, Meinhard came to America to establish a home.
He returned to Germany where he was united in marriage to Henny Ketelsen at the Lutheran Church in Hattstedt, Germany on February 9, 1930. The couple returned to their new home in America and settled in Cushing, Iowa where they were blessed with the birth of ten children.
Meinhard was a blacksmith first in Cushing and later, after moving to Schleswig, for Johannas Gosch until starting to farm new Deloit in 1934. In 1943, they purchased a farm west of Denison where they farmed until retiring in 1969 and moved to Denison.
Meinhard was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church since 1934; also a member of the Men's Club and Wedding Ring Club. He was a hard working man who enjoyed farming. In his leisure time he enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing pinochle and dancing, which he taught his daughters. He was a kind, caring and very loving father and grandfather who provided for his family with diligence.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Henny in 1989; three brothers; one sister, one great-grandson; one great granddaughter and a son-in-law, Leonard Hagemann.
Survivors include three sons, John Feddersen and his wife, Gloria of Denison; Hans Feddersen and his wife, Mary of Ida Grove; Ronald Feddersen and his wife, Barbara of Brighton Colorado; seven daughters, Margaret Hagemann of Schleswig, Julia Faye Prussing and her husband, Wilbert of Charter Oak; Maxine Garrett and her husband, Alan of Denison; Betty Guy and her husband, Merlin of Audubon; Elfrieda Waldemar and her husband, Jim of Odebolt, Jenny Lambert of Rossmoor, California; Joleen Vincent and her husband, Ronald of Liberal, Kansas, thirty-nine grandchildren; forty-six great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren and one sister, Margaret Feddersen of Uterson, Germany.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, February 15, 1996 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Larry Lemke officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art", "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me" and "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God". Honorary Pallbearers were: Michael Feddersen, Carson Feddersen, Jason Feddersen, Stuart Lambert, Steven Lambert, Bryan Guy, Lonnie Hagemann, Daniel Feddersen, Roger Prussing, Travis Vincent and Stan Lambert. Pallbearers were: John M. Feddersen, Doulgas Prussing, David Feddersen, Ryan Feddersen, Colby Waldemar, Mark Garrett, Craig Hagemann and Gary Guy. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. Meinhardt Henry Jaacks (1908 - 1982)
Meinhardt Henry Jaacks was born on a farm in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, Jan. 2, 1908, the son of Herman and Dora Kolholf Jaacks.He was raised on the family farm and received his formal education at the country schools near his home. While still at home, he started in the trucking business of which he was employed in for several years.
On Nov. 30, 1932, Meinhardt was united in marriage with Hilda Jepsen at Blair, Neb. Together they made their home in Denison where they raised their seven children. Meinhardt was employed on the bridge gang with the Crawford County Road Department, and later with Wm. Boyens Trucking Company. He then was employed with the Denison Street Department until his retirement. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.
Meinhardt died April 16, 1982, at the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Neb. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 74 years, 3 months and 14 days.
Meinhardt was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, John and Herbert Jaacks, and two sisters, Elizabeth Boyens, and Hedwig Schwitzer.
He is survived by his wife, Hilda of Denison, seven children, Robert of Webster City, Richard of Spirit Lake, Ruth Else of Denison, Roger of Tallahassee, Fl., Ronald of Webb City, Mo., Roseann, Mrs. Robert Olson of Deloit, and Rhonda, Mrs. Douglas Wessel of Denison, 18 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Boyens of Denison and Mrs. Marie Krayniski of Omaha, Neb. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., April 19, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with Kurt Kaiser, D.C.E. officiating. Comfort in music was provided by Henry Henningsen as soloist and Mrs. Fred Rabe as organist. Pallbearers included Wm. A Boyens, Melvin Boyens, LaVern Boyens, LaVerne Christiansen, Edmund Petersen, and Eldor Schwitzer. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery at Schleswig. The Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Meinhardt L. Steckelberg (1902 - 1983)
Meinhardt, son of Fred and Margaret Hargens Steckelberg, was born Feb. 23, 1902, in Crawford County, Iowa. He attended rural schools near his home.On May 5, 1926, he was united in marriage with Elsie Krogh at the home of her parents near Manilla. They farmed near Manilla all of their lives.
M.L. was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Manilla, and a member of the Lutheran Laymen's League, as well as, an elder for many years. He entered the Mesquite Community Hospital, Dallas, Texas, while visiting his daughter there shortly before Christmas, 1982. He died there Jan. 17, 1983, at the age of 80 years, 10 months, and 24 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Henry, and Ed.
He is survived by his wife, Elsie, Manilla; three children, Ione and her husband Robert James, St. Petersberg, Fl., Lois and her husband George James, Rockwall, Texas; Dr. Wayne Steckelberg and wife, Carol, Honolulu, Hawaii, fourteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, two brothers, Bill Steckelberg of Denison and Fred Steckelberg of Sioux City; one sister, Viola (Mrs. Don) Champion of Denison, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Manilla with Pastor Glenn Wiechmann officiating. Organist was Mrs. Art Joens. Vocalist were Carol Ann Segebart and Marlene Jahn. Pallbearers were Bob Steckleberg, Ray Jorgensen, Ted Krogh, Kenneth Steckelberg, Larry Justice, and Bernard Jorgensen. Honorary pallbearers were Bill Lohrmann, Carl Brus, Jim Theobald, Newton McCracken, Manly Humphreys, Bill Joens, Harry Saunders and Leroy Lueth. Interment was in the Nishnabotna Cemetery.

Melvin Julius Teut (1904 - 1990)
Melvin Julius Teut, the son of Herman and Anna Wiedeman Teut, was born Nov. 8, 1904, in Soldier Township, Charter Oak, Ia., and died Feb. 9, 1990, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Ia., at the age of 85 years.Melvin grew up on a farm in Soldier Township, attending the rural school and the Immanuel Lutheran School in Soldier Township. After his education, he worked on various farms.
He and Clara Clausen of Ute, Ia., were united in marriage Nov. 25, 1937, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Soldier Township. This union was blessed with three daughters. They made their home on a farm west of Schleswig for four years and them moved to a farm east of Schleswig, where they continued to make their home until retiring from the farm in 1970 and moving into Schleswig. Melvin worked at the Golf Course and had various other employment.
Melvin was baptized Jan. 1, 1905, and confirmed March 20, 1921, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Soldier Township. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, where he was a voting member and served as a trustee.
Preceding him in death were: his parents; five brothers and two sisters. Surviving his memory are: his wife, Clara; three daughters: Janet and her husband, Robert Beeck of Denison, Marliss Lenz of Omaha, and Joy Dean Baak of Shady Oaks, Lake City. Also surviving are: five grandchildren; brothers and sisters: Ralph Teut and his wife, Ruth of Ute, Herbert Teut and his wife, Arlene of Mapleton, Ruby and her husband, August Waderich of Mapleton, Erna and her husband, Gilbert Nihsen of Charter Oak, Raymond Teut and his wife, Dorothy of Ohio, Everett Teut and his wife, Betty of Omaha; one brother-in-law, Marcus Wodtke of Mapleton; two sisters-in-law, Christine Teut of Schleswig and Irene Teut of Denison.
Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 12, 1990, at 10:30 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Pastor Richard Nelson officiated at the services with interment in the Morgan Cemetery at Schleswig. Mrs. Marlene Hight was organist. The congregational hymns were "I'm But a Stranger Here, Heaven is My Home," "Nearer My God to Thee" and "How Great Thou Art." Serving as pallbearers were, Roger Teut, Alan Teut, Lenhardt Teut, Louis Kuehl, Freddie Friedrichsen and Earl Schmidt. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Service of Schleswig, Ia.

Mervin Mathias Cose (1908 - 1988)
Mervin Mathias Cose was born on a farm near Deloit, Dec. 25, 1908, the son of Dale W. and Bessie Brogden Cose. He was raised there and received his education in the Deloit School.On Aug. 15, 1940, Mervin was united in marriage with Margaret Winey at Denison. They lived in Deloit for several years where Mervin worked and later was manager of the Deloit Farmers Elevator and Lumber Yard. From Deloit they moved to Audubon where he was employed by the Lindholm Lumber Co. In 1947 they moved to Denison where he worked for the Eclipse Lumber Yard until it closed. He then was employed at Dixon Lumber and Big C. He spent his retirement years in Denison.
Mervin died Saturday, Sept. 17, 1988, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison after suffering an apparent heart attack at his home. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 79 years, eight months and 22 days. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Denison.
Mervin was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Jennings and Allen Cose, and one sister, Wilma Ells.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Margaret Cose of Denison; one daughter and her husband, Susan and Robert Buetel of Wichita, Kan.; two grandsons, Mark and Dale Buetel of Wichita, Kan.; three brothers and their wives, Curtis and Laura Mae Cose of Deloit, Jesse and Leanna Cose of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Leonard and Alice Cose of Denison; three sisters, Erma Stevenson of Rock Island, Ill., Thelma Lyman of Denison and Yvonne and her husband, Harold Holdsworth of Manilla. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 20, 1988 at the First United Methodist Church in Denison with Dr. Edward R. Peterson officiating. Music for the service was provided by Henry Henningsen singing, "Amazing Grace" and "You'll Never Walk Alone." Glenn Rankin served as organist for the service. Pallbearers were Glen Wellendorf, Garlyn Lyman, Carlyle Winey, Larry Cose, Don Steht and Joe Pieper. Interment was in the Deloit Cemetery at Deloit. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Meta Elizabeth (Greder) Carstens (1904 - 1995)
Meta Elizabeth Carstens was born on a farm in Washington Township, Crawford County near Buck Grove, Iowa on August 8, 1904, the daughter of Jacob and Augusta Carstens Greder. She died at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa on Wednesday, November 8, 1995 at the age of ninety-one years.She was baptized in Christ as an infant in the Lutheran faith and confirmed at the St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. She received her education in a rural school near her home, St. John's Lutheran School in Charter Oak and the Denison High School.
On September 3, 1924, Meta was united in marriage to Alfred Carstens at the Lutheran Parsonage in Denison by Rev. William Frese. The couple settled on Meta's parents farm near Buck Grove for three years, subsequently moving to a farm near Dow City and other area farms. In 1943 they were able to purchase her parent's farm and continued to live there until retiring to Denison in 1965.
Meta was a past member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Buck Grove, where she helped organize the first Ladies Aid in 1938. She was an active member of the first 4-H Club in Washington Township and was elected Secretary of the First County Extension Club in Denison. She was a faithful member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.
Meta was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Alfred on February 10, 1995. Survivors include two sons, Lloyd and his wife, Vera of Defiance and Gilbert and his wife, Ruth of Loveland, Colorado; five grandsons, Gary and his wife, Lane of Buck Grove; Ross and his wife, Kitty, and Dale, all of Des Moines; Gordon and his wife, Rhonda of College Station, Texas; Donald and his wife, Cathy of Loveland, Colorado; one granddaughter, Sandra of South Lake Tahoe, California; ten great-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Harry Greder and his wife, Doris of Omaha; one sister, Margaret Asmus of Denison; two sisters-in-law, Gertrude Greder of Buck Grove and Irma Bromert and her husband, Herb of Manning.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 11, 1995 at 9:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Philip E. Bloch officiated the service and grave side rites held in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "How Great Thou Art" and "Just as I Am" with the congregation singing "I Know that My Redeemer Lives". Those serving as pallbearers were: Ross Carstens, Gordon Carstens, Gary Carstens, Sandra Carstens, Dale Carstens and Don Carstens. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Dorcas Society. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.
