Viola E (Cowan) Stier (1902 - 1970)
Funeral services for Mrs. Viola E. Stier were held Monday, December 28, 1970. Mrs. Ray Schmidt was the organist. The congregation sang "Nearer My God to Thee" and the choir sang "Jesus Savior Pilot Me". Rev. F.A. Wiese read the following obituary:Viola E. Stier of Schleswig, daughter of William Cowan and his wife Ella Cokley was born February 12, 1902 at Missouri Valley, Iowa. She graduated from the Missouri Valley High School and the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls, where she trained as a teacher. She taught school at Woodbine, and also in Crawford County.
She was married to Harvey Stier in February 1926 at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison with Pastor Frese performing the ceremony. The couple farmed until 1949 when they moved to their home in Schleswig. Her husband died in November 1966.
She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church for some 20 years and had held office in the Ladies Aid. She died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on Christmas Day. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter and her husband, Harvey.
Survivors include two daughters: Deloris, wife of Charles Ellsworth and Marjorie, wife of Orville DeJong, both of Sioux City, five grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Dewey Krauss of Council Bluffs, and one brother Harold Cowan of Osgood, Indiana. She attained to 68 years, 10 months and 13 days.
Pallbearers were: Duane Knauss, Frank Sisson, Wesley Knauss, Riley Simpson, Robert Neubaum, and James Lindstrom. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery.

Walter Jurgen Jepsen (1913 - 1967)
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 18, for Walter Jurgen Jepsen at Denison. Pastor Arthur Freeburg officiated. Dorothy Norman was the organist.Walter Jurgen Jepsen, son of H. Henry Jepsen and Anna nee Jochim was born December 16, 1913 in Goodrich Township. He was baptized at the Evangelical Church in Schleswig on May 3, 1914 by Rev. W. R. Wetzler. He was confirmed in 1929 at the Evangelical Friedens Church in Schleswig by Rev. K. Kielhorn.
He was united in marriage to Agneta nee Siemer on June 19, 1935.
Walter Jepsen died Sunday, April 16, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital of a lingering illness. He attained the age of 54 years and four months.
He is survived by his wife, Agneta, six children, Barbara, Mrs. Palmer Moeller, Wayne, a highway patrolman Rock Rapids, Richard Lee of Denison and Dale and Nancy at home. Also surviving him are four grandchildren, Ross, Terri and Scott Moeller and Wade Jepsen, two brothers, Fred of Dunlap and Henry of Spirit Lake and one sister, Lilian Beeck of Denison.
He was preceded in death by his father, on June 26, 1950, and his mother on October 30, 1918.
Pallbearers were Arthur Beeck, Robert Beeck, Kenneth Jepsen, Dale Siemer, Max Siemer and Bill Siemer. Interment was made at the Morgan Cemetery.

Walter John August Petersen (1911 - 2005)
Walter John August Petersen was born in Schleswig, Iowa on March 25, 1911. His parents were John and Amanda Burke Petersen. He died Saturday, February 5, 2005 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-three.Walter was baptized as an infant into the Lutheran faith July 30, 1911 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township and confirmed April 5, 1925 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig, Iowa.
He was raised on a farm in the Schleswig area and graduated from Schleswig High School in 1929. Following school he owned and operated the Standard Oil Service Station in downtown Schleswig.
On June 28, 1939, Walter was united in marriage to Hazel Julia Carlson. The couple made their home in Schleswig. On March 31, 1944, Walter was drafted into the U.S. Army, receiving his basis training and Artillery training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was then sent to the Pacific Front and served in the Philippine Islands. His company was prepared to invade Japan when the "A" Bomb caused Japan to surrender. Walter received his honorable discharge January 13, 1946, having received a Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star.
Walter was a member of the Schleswig Volunteer Fire Department from 1939 to 1958. He was also a member of the Schleswig School Board from 1954 to 1958. He served as the Schleswig Town Clerk for several years. He was also a member of the Schleswig American Legion Post 645 and VFW Post 3930, and a long time member of the Schleswig Community Club.
Walter and Hazel enjoyed golfing and playing bridge and other card games. Following their retirement they wintered at Alamo, Texas in the Rio Grande Valley. Walter and Hazel were long time members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Hazel, son Robert, and brother Cyrenus. Survivors include one son, Roger of Schleswig; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Katy Petersen of Schleswig; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 9, 2005 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Organist, Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "The Church's One Foundation", "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" and "Rock of Ages, Cleft For Me".

Walter Herman Schultz (1895 - 1972)
Walter Herman Schultz, son of Herman Schultz and his wife Emma nee Thomas, was born August 19, 1895, in Hanover Township, Crawford County. He was baptized and confirmed by Rev. Runge of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township and graduated from the parochial school conducted by the congregation.For several years, he farmed with his father in Hanover Township. He then moved to Schleswig and worked at the Behrmann Grocery and Dry Good Store. Later, he managed several chain stores. In 1931, he bought his own store in Ricketts, selling out in 1952, when he moved back to Schleswig. Here he managed the Schleswig Telephone Company for 10 years. When the phone company was sold, he remained with the new owners for 3 1/2 years, retiring in 1965.
He was married to Myrtle Taylor at Ida Grove on September 11, 1938. He was very active in his church membership. He held the office of treasurer at St. Paul's, Hanover Township for some 20 years. When he moved to Schleswig and joined Immanuel Lutheran Church, he was soon elected to office. He served in the honorable office of elder of the congregation, and also was its treasurer for a number of years.
Mr. Schultz suffered a stroke at his home in May 1972 and died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on Thursday evening, October 12, 1972. He attained to 77 years, 1 month and 23 days.
Survivors include: his wife Myrtle; two children, Regina, wife of F. William Moxley of Overland Park, Kansas and their son Mark; Sandra, wife of Roland Landsness of Atlantic, Iowa; three brothers, George of Denison, Ben of Decatur, Indiana and Martin of Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 16, 1972, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig with the Rev. F.A. Wiese officiating. Mrs. Ray Schmidt was the organist. The congregation sang "Abide With Me" and the choir sang "I'm But A Stranger Here". Pallbearers were: Melvin Teut, Paul Briggle, Raymond Loeck, Norman Hummel, Leonhardt Schultz and Freddie Friedrichsen.
Interment was in St. Paul's Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Wanda Irene (Allbaugh) Peper (1919 - 2002)
Wanda Irene Peper was born August 26, 1919 the daughter of William and Sarah Boggs Allbaugh. She died Tuesday, May 21, 2002 at the Morningside Rehab and Care Center in Ida Grove, Iowa at the age of eighty-two.Wanda was born in Richland Center, Wisconsin. She received her education at the Richland Center High School and received three years of nurses training at the Anchor Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota, graduating as a Registered Nurse.
On February 5, 1943, Wanda was united in marriage to Raymond J. Peper at St. Paul, Minnesota. After World War II, when Raymond was discharged from the service, he returned to the Schleswig area, then in the early 1950's, they moved to Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of four children. Wanda worked as a Registered Nurse in both the old and new hospitals in Ida Grove and Denison. She also worked as the clinic nurse for Dr. Heilman in Ida Grove.
Wanda was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig and the Women's Guild. She was also a member of the V.F.W., blood bank volunteer and quilter. Wanda and Raymond loved traveling and spending winters in Florida and Texas. In her leisure time, Wanda enjoyed playing cards and socializing with her two card clubs.
Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Silas, Paul, William and Robert Allbaugh and two sisters, Mabel Jones and Ruth Lettig.
Survivors include her husband, Raymond of Schleswig; two sons, Raymond Peper Jr. of Fort Worth, Texas; Joseph Peper and his wife, Charlotte of Des Moines, Iowa; two daughters, Jane Frahm and her husband, Jim of Schuyler, Nebraska; Barbara Siebrecht and her husband, Roger of Las Vegas, Nevada; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one brother, Newell Allbaugh and his wife, Mertie of Loganville, Wisconsin; one sister-in-law, Bessie Allbaugh of Richard Center, Wisconsin; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, May 24, 2002 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Juanita Gillies officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Wendy Bumann provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross". Those serving as pallbearers were: Gordon Quandt, Swen Berger, Jerrod Frahm, Jeffrey Frahm, Kirk Siebrecht, Scott Siebrecht and David Peper.

Werner C. Rath (1915 - 1985)
Werner C. Rath was born on March 11, 1915 in Crawford County, Iowa, the son of John and Katherine Jurgensen Rath. He died Friday, December 27, 1985 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital at the age of 70.Werner spent his childhood years on a farm in Washington Township, and was baptized as an infant in the Christian faith. He was confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church of Denison, and received his formal education in the Washington Township school.
On August 10, 1936, Werner was united in marriage to Anita Ludeman in Yankton, S.D., and together they made their home on a farm near Denison for 49 years, until just recently moving to Denison.
In addition to his parents, Werner was preceded in death by two brothers: Herbert and Walter, and one brother in infancy. Also, three half-brothers: Henry, Rudolph and Carl; and one half-sister, Freeda Jedele.
Survivors include his wife Anita, one son Robert and his wife Darlene of Houston, Tex.; three daughters, Karen, Mrs. Darrell Slechta, of Denison, Donna, Mrs. Everett Miller of Denison, and Cindy, Mrs. Terrence Ross of Fort Dodge. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. He is further survived by three sisters, Mrs. Clara Weller of Ute; Gertrude, Mrs. Harry Christensen of Denison; and Carmen, Mrs. Edward Beerman of Denison; one brother Robert of Denison; one half-sister Elsa Schoening of Norfolk, Ne. and one half brother, Otto of Denison. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Mrs. Louise Ludeman of Denison, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 30, 1985 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Burial was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. The Rev. Donald Fraker officiated at the services and the graveside rites. Serving as pallbearers were Brian Rath, Tod Slechta, Eugene Miller, Barry Rath, Paul Miller and Mark Slechta. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Werner William Ipsen (1915 - 1985)
Werner William Ipsen was born on February 4, 1915, near Schleswig, the son of Anton C. and Mary Sell Ipsen. He died suddenly on Thursday evening, Feb. 14, at his home in Schleswig, at the age of 70.Werner spent his early years on his parents' farm near Schleswig. He received his formal education in the rural schools near his home.
Werner was united in marriage to the former Cathrine Iversen at the George Schiernbeck farm in Ida County on April 23, 1939, by Rev. A. Rinne. Together they made their home in the Schleswig community where they have resided for forty-five years. Werner was employed his entire life as a carpenter in the Schleswig community, and in the surrounding Crawford and Ida county areas.
In addition to his parents, Werner was preceded in death by one brother in infancy, and one sister Anna Schiernbeck.
Survivors include his wife Cathrine of Schleswig, seven sons, Robert of Cheyenne, Wyo., Arthur, Marc, and Edward, all of Schleswig, Gary and David of Story City, and Steven of Kiron, and eight daughters, Carol of Eugene, Ore., Lila (Mrs. John) Riley of Des Moines, Diane of Vinton, Susan of Schleswig, Doris (Mrs. David) Greimann of Johnston, Patricia of Denver, Colo., Debra of Maryville, Mo., and Nancy of Vermillion, S.D. Also surviving are thirteen grandchildren, one brother Lorenz of Des Moines, and two sisters, Helen Gurganus of Las Vegas, Nev., and Elsabe (Mrs. John) Niklai of San Diego, Calif., as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Feb. 18 at 10:30 a.m., at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services and graveside rites. Mrs. Dorothy Jessen served as organist for the services with Mrs. Rubie Kastner serving as soloist. Hymns for the services included Beyond the Sunset and Nearer My God To Thee. Serving as pallbearers were Raymond Peper, Leonard Teut, Harry Schwanz, Raymond Loeck, Paul Clausen and Steve Mills. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Schleswig.

Werthus Peter Grill (1907 - 1979)
Werthus Peter Grill was born Jan. 13, 1907 at Otter Creek Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Louie and Julie Kroeger Grill. He died on June 19, 1979 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, at the age of 72.Werthus was raised on a family farm near Schleswig. He received his formal education in the rural schools near his home. He also attended the Schleswig High School. At the completion of his education he worked with his family on the farm.
On Dec. 3, 1930, Werthus was united in marriage to Lillian Wellendorf at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. They farmed six miles from Schleswig for 15 years before moving to a farm two miles from Schleswig. In 1962, Werthus retired from the farm and moved to Schleswig. He was employed at Feeder Supply and at the time of his death at Sonksen Seed in Schleswig.
Werthus was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. He was baptized in Denison on Aug. 21, 1908 and confirmed at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig on March 25, 1923.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son. Survivors include his wife, Lillian, of Schleswig; two daughters, May Lou, Mrs. Everett Evers and Juliann, Mrs. Bruce Christie, both of Schleswig; five grandchildren; one brother, Octavus Grill of Schleswig; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held June 12, at 2 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the service. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. Pallbearers included DeWayne Sonksen, Emmett Hollander, Carl Lamaak, Ralph Miller, Marc Hollbaum and Roger Rusch. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home.

Wibbo Johann Suntken (1880 - 1967)
Wibbo Johann Suntken, son of Johann Suntken and his wife Wiebke nee Harm, was born Dec. 3, 1880 in Germany. He was baptized in infancy and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. In 1903 he came to this country and settled near Belmond. He came to Denison to make his home in 1930.After a brief stay in the local hospital in November of 1966, he went to the Colonial Manor in Odebolt to make his home. He died here Sunday at the age of 86 years.
Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Fodderberg of Ames, Mrs. Wibkelina Lyons of Rockyford, Colo., Dena Rossow of Des Moines, Mrs. Nellie Camp of Bedford, Ind., and Mrs. Geraldine Blair of Vail, eight sons, John of Westwood, Calif., William of Elgin, Minn., Fred of Burlington, George of Redwood City, Calif., Arnold of Denison, Clarence of Ukiah, Calif., Gerald of Dayton and Richard of Denison. He is also survived by one brother, John of Belmond, and three sisters, Lena of Alexander, Hannah of Thornton and Grace of Popejoy, 50 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Aug. 2, 1967 at 10:30 a.m. at the Maxwell Funeral home in Denison. Rev. Walter Quandt officiated. The Lutheran Ladies choir sang, accompanied by Mrs. Fred Rabe. Pallbearers were Clifford Bryan, Sam Bryan, Barney Petersen, Harvey Shives, Louie Strissel, and Frank Whitaker. Interment was made in the Lutheran cemetery.

Wilbert Martin Gierstorf (1918 - 1978)
Wilbert Martin Gierstorf was born on April 18, 1918 near Schleswig, Iowa, the son of Chris and Lizzie Gierstorf. He died on Monday evening, January 23, 1978, as a result of an automobile accident at the age of 59.Wilbert was raised on a family farm near Schleswig and attended the rural schools of the area as well as the Hanover Parochial School. He later served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
On December 11, 1946, Wilbert was united in marriage to Lorraine Hagemann at Schleswig, Iowa. Together they made their home on a farm southwest of Schleswig.
Wilbert served for many years as a Director of the Farmers Savings Bank in Ricketts. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by his mother. Survivors include his wife Lorraine of Schleswig; two sons, Arlen of Schleswig and Verdean at home; two daughters, Janet, Mrs. Maynard Meseck of Charter Oak and Darlis, Mrs. Stephen Duecker of Danbury; five grandchildren; and his father C.H. Gierstorf. Also by three brothers, Reinhardt of Denison, Elmer of Charter Oak, and Delbert of Schleswig, and four sisters, Mrs. Pauline Meyer of Schleswig, Esther Gierstorf of Schleswig, Leona, Mrs. Herbert Meyer of Charter Oak and Irma, Mrs. Harold Bornhoft of Schleswig.
Funeral services were held on Friday, January 27, 1978, at 10:30 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig. Burial was in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Hanover Township. The Rev. Theodore Letzring officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Ladean Gietstorf, Lonnie Hagemann, Douglas Hagemann, Steven Bornhoft, Michael Meyer and Darrell Gierstorf. Honorary pallbearers were Wayne Kuhlmann, Edwin Hopp, Darold Lee, Stephen Claussen and E.W. Claussen.

Ferdinand Schnoor (1887 - 1978)
Ferdinand Schnoor was bom on Dec. 28, 1887 at Eckenford, Germany the son of Jacob and Ida Munsdotter Schnoor. He died at his home in Charter Oak Jan. 26, 1978 at the age of 90.Ferdinand came as a baby with his family from Germany to the United States. The family made its first home in Underwood, Iowa for four years before moving to the Charter Oak area. Ferdinand received his formal education in the rural schools of the area. He was baptized and later confirmed into the Lutheran faith.
On April 18, 1917 he was united in marriage to Ida Bramstedt at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Ute. Together they made their home on a farm in Willow Township. In 1952 they retired and moved to Charter Oak. Ida died in 1965 and Ferdinand continued to make his home in Charter Oak.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Leona.
Survivors include one daughter Elsie of Charter Oak and two sons, Fred of Mapleton and Martin of Charter Oak. Also by three grandchildren, four great grandchildren and one brother, Carl of Ricketts.
Funeral services were held Jan. 28 at 1:30 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Charter Oak. Burial was in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. The Rev. Henry W. Friedrich officiated at the services. Pallbearers included, Herbert Neumann, Alvin Kutchinski, Roger Henshen, Ervin Meyer, Edgar Blume and La Verne Strait. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Charter Oak.

Frank R. Jensen (1899 - 1982)
Frank R. Jensen was born on November 16, 1899, in Morgan Township; Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Jacob and Lena Struck Jensen. He died on Wednesday, February 10, 1982, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa, at the age of 82.Frank was baptized and later confirmed in the Christian faith. He spent his early years on a family farm in Morgan Township. Frank received his formal education in the rural schools near his home. He later graduated from the Schleswig High School.
On February 8, 1922, Frank was united in marriage to Clara Backhaus in Schleswig. Together they made their home in Morgan Township where they farmed. In 1950, Frank retired from the farm and moved to Schleswig. He was later employed with Tenhulzen Seed in Schleswig for a number of years.
Frank was a life long member of the United Church of Christ. He was a member of the church choir for over fifty years. He served on the Building Committee, the Spiritual Council and was secretary of the Brotherhood for many years. He also served on the Morgan Township Cemetery Board and was Morgan Township Clerk for many years.
In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by four brothers, Rudolph, William, Bernhard and Hugo.
Survivors include, his wife Clara of Schleswig, one son Burdell and his wife Orpha of Schleswig, three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother, Edward of Ida Grove and one sister, Mrs. Delia Paulsen of Correctionville.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 13, 1982, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig, The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Serving as pallbearers were Norman Paulsen, Robert Wiebers, Gerald Hedstrom, William J. Petersen, Ed Clausen and Freddie Backhaus. Honorary pallbearers were Terry Kline, Ray Bumann, Ross Jensen, Eldon Backhaus, Herbert Miller and Harry Backhaus.

Freda Caroline (Rademacker) Wessel (1897 - 1976)
Mrs. Freda Caroline Wessel, the daughter of Carl Rademacker and Johanna Friederike (Berg) Rademacker, was born in Staplehurst, Nebraska, on March 25, 1897, and died April 19 1978, at her home in Denison, at the age of 79 years and 23 days.She came to Charter Oak with her parents and received her education in a rural school near, her home. After she finished school she helped her brother and his wife while their children were small and until her marriage.
On August 11, 1915, she was married to Henry Wessel, the ceremony being performed by Reverend Amstein in the Lutheran parsonage in Charter Oak. They were the parents of nine children, Mrs. Henry (Florence) Preul, of Denison, Mrs. Edward (Esther) Sonnichsen, of Denison, Mrs. Oluf (Helen) Olson, of Deloit, Delmar Wessel of Denison, Dorothy, deceased, Floyd Wessel, of Ida Grove, Mrs. Vahn (Leva) Schumacher, of Battle Creek, Mrs. Don (Lila Mae) Kline, of Schleswig, and Mrs. Robert (Lois) Petersen, of Le Mars.
Their first home was a farm, five miles south of Dow City. After three years they moved to a farm one mile north of Charter Oak. Three years later they moved to a home farther north of Charter Oak, Staying there for nine years before going to a farm west of Kenwood. From there they moved to a farm north of Dow City, and in 1945 they retired and moved to Denison. Mrs. Wessel was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church. Mr. Wessel died on December 18, 1964. Mrs. Wessel continued to live in Denison.
She is survived by eight children, forty-one grandchildren, fifty great grandchildren, one brother, Herbert Rademacker of Ute, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Henry, one daughter, Dorothy, one grandchild, one great grandchild, one brother, Charlie, and three sisters, Augusta, Minnie, and Anna.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 21, 1976, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, with Reverend Kenneth Haydon

Fred C.A. Steckelberg (1899 - 1987)
Fred C.A. Steckelberg, 87, Sunrise Manor, retired employee of Sioux City Stationery, died Tuesday (Sept. 1987) in the nursing home after a long illness. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in St., James United Methodist Church. The Rev. Ronald Unser will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. today with the family present from 7-9 p.m. in Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.Mr. Steckelberg was born Nov. 19, 1899, in Crawford County, Iowa. He lived in the Manilla, Iowa, area as a child. He also lived in Mapleton, Iowa, for 30 years and had lived in Sioux City for 27 years.
He married Hazel V. Theobald June 10, 1923, in Denison, Iowa. She died June 6, 1975, in Sioux City. He was employed by Haubrich Construction for 30 years while living in Mapleton and was employed by Sioux City Stationery for 12 years, retiring in 1972.
Mr. Steekelberg was a member of St. James United Methodist Church. While living in Mapleton, he was a member of the Mapleton Volunteer Fire Department for more than 10 years.
Survivors include two sons, Melroy J. of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Robert W. of Sioux City; a sister, Mrs. Don (Viola) Champion of Denison; five grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Fred H. Greinke (1897 - 1985)
Fred H. Greinke was born on March 9, 1897 in Iowa. He died on Monday morning, August 19, 1985, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of 88.Fred spent his formative years in Chicago, Ill. He received his formal education in the Chicago schools. He continued his education at River Forest, Ill., graduating in 1917. He moved to Denison in 1918 where he began his teaching career at Zion Luthran School.
On June 8, 1929, Fred was united in marriage to Erma Salomon. Together they made their home in Denison all of their married lives. Fred entered Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison in June of 1983. Erma died in July of 1984.
Fred taught at Zion Lutheran School for over forty-nine years. He served as Secretary for the Zion Voters for many years, and directed the Ladies Choir. He was also a member of the Denison Kiwanis.
In addition to his parents and wife, Fred was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Herman and one sister Emma.
Survivors include one son David and wife Betty of Bradenton, Fla., and one daughter Carolyn, Mrs. Ernest Stenberg of Kailua, Hawaii. Also surviving are four grandchildren, and one sister Louise Gieseking of Munster, Ind., as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 22, at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Interment was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. The Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services and graveside rites. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist for the services. Congregational hymns for the services included "Abide With Me" and "For All The Saints, Who From Their Labors Rest". Zion Lutheran School students in grades three through eight sang "I'm But A Stranger Here." Serving as pallbearers for the services were Clarence Denker, Gilbert Moeller, Walter Denker, James Hugg, Robert Logan and Dennis Bergstadt. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Fred J. H. Knop (1892 - 1978)
Fred J. H. Knop of Charter Oak, the son of Julius and Rosa Detmers Knop was born October 14, 1892, at Atlantic, la. He died April 22, 1978, 3 miles North of Ricketts having reached the age of 85 years, 6 months, and 8 days. As a small child he moved with his parents to O'Neill, Nebr.He married Alma Ullrich January 5, 1916, in Charter Oak, la. Four sons and six daughters were born to this marriage. After marriage they farmed in the Soldier Township and he was a breeder of Angus cattle and Duroc hogs.
He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and held offices in the church, including secretary of the church's cemetery board and director of the parochial school. He was a charter member of the Farm Bureau and was a 4-H leader for 25 years.
Services were held at 10 A.M. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Soldier Township with the Rev. E. E. Greene officiating. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery in Charter Oak. Pallbearers were grandsons: Dwight Lively, Dennis Lively, Rev. Steve Melvin, Brad Hopp, Douglas Knop, Kevin Knop, Donald Knop, Danny Knop, Dennis Knop, Charles Knop, Gary Knop, Michael Knop, Alan Bruhn, Byron Bruhn, Evan Bruhn, Mark Yelsma, and Matthew Yelsma.
Survivors include the widow; four sons, Fredrick of Prairie Village, Kan., Julius of Denison, Herbert of Woodbine and Eugene of Ida Grove; six daughters, Mrs. Rienhardt (Mona) Geirstorf of Denison, Mrs. Benton (Evelyn) Lively of Salina, Kan., Mrs. John (Mildred) Melvin of Belton, Texas, Mrs. Edwin (Florence) Hopp of Charter Oak, Mrs. Dale (Ruth) Bruhn of Mapleton and Mrs. Phyllis Yelsma of Council Bluffs; a brother, Arthur of Columbus, Mont.; two sisters, Mrs. Marie Ullrich of Vinton and Mrs. Dorothy Schultz of Schleswig; 34 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother and 2 grandchildren.

Fred William Kunze (1891 - 1972)
Funeral services for Fred William Kunze were held at St. John's Lutheran Church Monday, February 7, 1972 with the Rev. Albert I. Prouty officiating. Church organist Mrs. Paul Clausen accompanied the congregation for hymns Asleep in Jesus and Just As I Am.Fred William Kunze, son of William and Marie (Rodewald) Kunze was born September 29, 1891 in Hanover, Germany, and died Thursday, February 3, 1972, at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 80 years, four months and five days.
Mr. Kunze came to the United States with his parents when he was six months old. On February 21, 1915 he was married to Elsie Ann Neddermeyer of Charter Oak. To this union three children were born, Lawrence, Fred and Phyllis. They lived on farms in this vicinity and retired in 1949 when they made their home in Charter Oak. Mr. Kunze was failing in health for several years.
He leaves to mourn his wife Elsie; one daughter Phyllis, Mrs. Ed Baak of Charter Oak; 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his two sons Lawrence and Fred; by his brothers, Henry William, Otto and Martin and sisters Minnie, Anna and Rose.
Interment was in St. Paul's Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Allen Gloede, Ronald Gloede, Rick Kunze, Roger Gloede, Larry Kunze and Robie Kunze. Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of the arrangements.

Frieda Hermine Marie (Neumann) Friedrichsen (1893 - 2002)
Frieda Hermine Marie Friedrichsen was born October 11, 1893, the daughter of Johann C. and Anna Tams Neumann. She died Saturday, January 5, 2002 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of one-hundred eight.Frieda was born on a farm in Stockholm Township, near Kiron, Iowa and was baptized in Christ on November 26, 1893 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Stockholm Township, Kiron, Iowa and later confirmed there on April 14, 1909. Frieda received her education in a rural school, except for three years when she attended school in Omaha.
On June 30, 1915, Frieda was united in marriage to John Friedrichsen at St. John's Lutheran Church. The couple made their home on a farm near Schleswig for three years before moving to Schleswig. They later moved to Denison and after John's death, Frieda moved to Kiron, where she and her sister, Emile operated a small cafe. After several years, Frieda returned to Denison.
Frieda was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Kiron and in her younger years, she was active in P.T.R., Each One Reach One and assisted in Vacation Bible School. She was a very loving and caring person who enjoyed spending time with her family. She enjoyed sewing and playing Bingo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sons, one in infancy and Roy. Survivors include two grandsons, Dale Friedrichsen of Denison; Dennis Friedrichsen and his wife, Cheri of Las Vegas, Nevada; one granddaughter, Faye Mohr of Carroll; a daughter-in-law, Verna Johnson of Las Vegas, Nevada; nine great-grandchildren and nineteen great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 8, 2002, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Kiron. Rev. Mark Alaugavitz officiated the service and grave side rites held at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Organist Lois Gronau provided the organ accompaniment for Jane Gronau as she sang "I'm But A Stranger Here", and "Lord, Take My Hand and Lead Me", and for the congregational hymn "God Be With You". Those serving as pallbearers were: Marvin Neumann, Dale Gronau, Jerry Gronau, Jack Neumann, Greg Gronau, and Abe Gronau. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Frieda Marie (Mesenbrink) Lingle (1899 - 1988)
Frieda Marie Lingle was born on April 23, 1899, in Hanover Township, Crawford County, la., tne daughter of Henry and Anna Lorensen Mesenbrink. She died on Jan. 27, 1988 at the Dunlap Care Cenfer in Dunlap, having attained the age of 88 years. Frieda grew up on a farm and attended rural schools in Hanover Township, and moved with her parents to Denison.On Dec. 24, 1930 she and Frances Lingle of Denison were untied in marriage at Elk Point, S.D. While working on the railroad, her husband, Frances was transferred often, and Frieda moved with her husband to many towns during their younger years, when finally they moved to Denison where Frieda owned and operated the Lingle Grocery store.
On July 1, 1987, Frieda entered the Dunlap Care Center in Dunlap where she lived with her husband until his death on Jan. 9, 1988. Frieda remained at the Care Center until her death. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, and the Ladies Aid in Denison.
In addition to her parents and husband Frances, Frieda was preceded in death by two brothers: George and Henry; and four sisters: Elma Lee, Sophia Nabb, Annie Zenkey and Matilda Meeves.
Survivors include three sons: William Oldfield and his wife, Irene of Dow City, Allen Lingle and his wife, Marita of Denison and Alfred Lingle of Stockton, Calif.; three daughters: Laura and her husband, Virgil Johnson of Beloit, Wis., Frances Marie and her husband, Richard McGhghy of Clear Water, Fla., and Patricia Buss of Sioux City. Also surviving are fifteen grandchildren and two sisters: Mrs. Rose Berner of Denison and Mrs. Lilly Johannsen of Sterling, Ill.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Jan. 29, 1988 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with Rev. James W. Ristvedt officiating the service and the grave side rites. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery in Denison. Mrs. Darold Kahl served as organist for Henry Henningsen as soloist, and congregational singing with selections including "Take My Hand Precious Lord," "Beautiful Savior," and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Serving as pallbearers were Larry Berner, Jeffery Lingle, Brian Lingle, Jim Oldfield, Kenney Zerkey and Walter Johannsen Jr. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Gretha Louise (Petersen) Knudsen (1889 - 1973)
Funeral services for Gretha L. Knudsen were held Tuesday, January 2, 1973, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. In the absence of Pastor F.A. Wiese, the service was conducted by Pastor C.W. Schmidt of Denison, who had been the Pastor of the departed at Grant Township. Mrs. Ray Schmidt was the organist. The congregation sang "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and the choir sang "Just As I Am".Gretha Louise Knudsen, nee Petersen, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Petersen, on May 23, 1889 in Garfield Township, Ida County, Iowa and was baptized in Grant Lutheran Church on October 6, 1889 by Rev. Human. She was confirmed on March 28, 1902 by Rev. Vonderau in Grant Lutheran Church.
She was married to Martin Knudsen on February 18, 1914 in Grant Lutheran Church. They lived on a farm close to Danbury for two years, then moved to the Knudsen home place in Ida County and lived there until December, 1948 when they moved to Schleswig. She had been in failing health for several years and passed away at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison on Saturday, December 30, 1972. She was a member of the Lutheran faith all her life, first of Grant Lutheran Church and after moving to Schleswig of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Two children were born to this union Marven and Elnora. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1952, her son Marven in 1967, also one granddaughter and two brothers.
She is survived by her daughter Elnora, Mrs. Lorenz Petersen, son-in-law Lorenz Petersen of Schleswig, daughter-in-law Helen Knudsen of Ida Grove, three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, also many relatives and friends.
Pallbearers were: Eddie Jensen, Elmer Jessen, Elfred Meisner, Hans Detlefsen, Theodore Aldag and Vernus Petersen. Interment was in Grant Township Cemetery.

Gunnar Martin Johnson (1899 - 1980)
Gunnar Martin Johnson was born on February 13, 1899, in Smoland, Sweden, the son of Carl and Emelia Petersen Johnson. He died on Saturday, February 2, 1980, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa, at the age of 80.Gunnar came to the United States in 1912, making his home with an aunt and uncle in the Kiron area. He completed his formal education in the public schools near his new home.
In January of 1921 Gunnar was united in marriage to Anna Jessen. Together they made their home on a farm in Ida County. Anna died in 1957. Gunnar continued to farm and on August 3, 1958 he was married to Lillie Wellendorf at Schleswig. They retired and moved to Schleswig in 1959. In 1967, Lillie died and Gunnar continued to make his home in Schleswig. On October 31, 1970, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Martin at Schleswig.
Gunnar was baptized as an infant in Sweden and later after moving to the United States was confirmed in the Christian faith. He was a long-time member of the United Church of Christ, where he served on the church council. He also served on the Crawford County Conservation Board and the Schleswig City Council.
In addition to his parents and his wives Anna and Lillie, he was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Survivors include, his wife Evelyn of Schleswig, one son Roy of Ida Grove, one daughter Mary Ellen, Mrs. Vernon Ludwig of Cherokee, Iowa and one step daughter, Verta, Mrs. Gene Pugh of Omaha, Nebraska. Also by eight grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren and two brothers, Herbert of Odebolt and Bayard of Kiron.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 5, 1980, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ, Schleswig, Iowa. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery. The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Jack Jessen, Bruce Reis, Lea Nelson, Roger Bumann, LeRoy Johnson and Roger Hunt.

Hazel Jane (Shives) Mullenger (1899 - 1975)
Hazel Jane Mullenger, Denison, daughter of Charles and Mary Etta Petty Shives, was born July 16, 1899, in Crawford County, near Denison and died July 17, 1975, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital at the age of 76 years.Mrs. Mullenger attended rural school. In June, 1920, she was united in marriage to William R. Mullenger in Denison. They settled on the Mullenger farm near Denison. Five children were born to this union, Donna, Keith, Lavone, William Lee, and Karen. Mrs. Mullenger was a member of the Methodist Church in Denison. In 1955 they retired from farming and moved to Denison.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Raymond Shives and Jesse Shives, and one sister, Inez Smith.
Survivors include her husband, William R., two sons, Keith of New York City, and William Lee of Denison, three daughters, Donna Reed (Mrs. Grover Asmus) of Beverly Hills, Calif.; Lavone (Mrs. Michael Flynn) of Beverly Hills, Calif.; and Karen (Mrs. Michael Moreland) of Little River, Calif., fifteen grandchildren, three brothers, Harvey and Leslie Shives, both of Denison, and Ross Shives of Los Angeles, Calif., two sisters, Mrs. Elsie McGimpsey of Shelby, Nebr., and Mrs. Mabel Yankey of Denison, several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 19 with Rev. Myrle Horner officiating. Pallbearers were Arden Amman, Peter McGinn, Reiny Mundt, Walter Meyer, Earnest Miller and William Ehlers. Interment was made in Oakland Cemetery with Huebner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Hedwig Anna (Kortmann) Bohlmann (1898 - 1989)
Hedwig Anna Bohlmann, the daughter of William and Mary Gierstorf Kortmann, was born on Jan. 21, 1898, near Charter Oak, la. She died on Feb. 23, 1989, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, at the age of 91 years.Hedwig grew up on the family farm and received her education in the St. Paul's Lutheran School in Hanover Township. She was baptized on Feb. 1, 1898 and confirmed on March 31, 1912, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hanover Township.
On March 26, 1916, she and Rudolph Bohlmann of Charter Oak were united in marriage at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with six children. They farmed in Morgan Township until retiring from the farm and moving to Denison in 1946. She became a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison at that time. After Rudolph died she moved to Charter Oak, where she made her home for nine years, and transferred her membership to St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. She returned to Denison and in 1983 entered Eventide Lutheran Home. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and a long time member of the Ladies Aid of the church.
Preceding Hedwig in death were her parents: her husband Rudolph and three brothers: Bernhard Kortmann, Gilbert Kortmann and Walter Kortmann and one great-grandson.
Survivors include her children: Estella Rahn of Denison, Ralph Bohlmann and his wife, La Verne of Charter Oak, Victor Bohlmann and his wife, Vernet of Jefferson, Edwin Bohlmann and his wife Lenora of Onawa, Leola and her husband, Truman Ault of Bloomington, Minn., and Orville Bohlmann and his wife, Clara of Denison. Also surviving are sixteen grandchildren; nineteen greatgrandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Esther Kortmann of Denison.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Pastor Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services with interment in the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Hanover Township. Mrs. Karen Kahl was organist for Henry Henningsen as soloist. Selections were "Asleep in Jesus" and "Nearer My God to Thee" with the congregation hymn "What A Friend We Have in Jesus." Serving as pallbearers were Kent Bohlmann, Randell Bohlmann, Blaine Bohlmann, Jonathon Ault, Gailen Meseck and Donald (Butch) Jensen.

Helen (Carstensen) Foster (1899 - 1987)
Helen Foster was born at Albany, Ill., December 28, 1899, the daughter of Peter and Mary Smith Carstensen. She was raised in Missouri and was baptized at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Stewartsville, Mo., December 29, 1907.On January 18, 1920, Helen was united in marriage with Emmor Foster at Morgan, Mo. They made their home on farms in the Crawford County, la. area until moving into Denison in 1956. Emmor was a Denison policeman for many years and Helen was employed as a cook at several Denison cafes.
Emmor died May 10, 1973, and Helen continued to reside at her home in Denison Since May 19, 1983, Helen had resided at the Denison Care Center where her death occurred early Saturday morning, September 19, 1987. At the time of her Heath she had attained the age of 87 years, 8 months, and 21 days. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Denison.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, Eugene Foster, six brothers and four sisters. She is survived by two sons, Earl "Shorty" Foster and his wife Lucile of Denison, la., and Elmer "PeeWee" Foster and his wife Luetta of Corvallis, Ore., one daughter-in-law, Nola Foster of Lake View, la., ten grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, September 21, 1987, at the Pfannebecker Funeral home in Denison, Ia., with Elder Michael W. Smith officiating. Music for the service was provided by JoAnne Magden singing "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Beyond The Sunset". Glenn Rankin served as organist for the service. Pallbearers included Lawrence Wordekemper, Dean Wordekemper, Bernhard Petersen, Marvin Cates, Lonald Patchin, and Merlin Maack.

Henrietta C. (Murphy) Flanigan (1894 - 1987)
MAPLETON, Iowa - Henrietta C. Flanigan, 92, of Mapleton died Sunday in the Dunlap Care Center. (May 1987)Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton. Monsignor A. W. Behrens will officiate. Burial will be in Danbury Catholic Cemetery. The rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. today by St. Mary's Guild and 8 p.m. by the parish in Walter Funeral Home in Mapleton.
Mrs. Flanigan, the former Henrietta Murphy, was born Nov. 7, 1894, in Soldier Township, Crawford County. She graduated from Denison Normal Teachers College and taught school in rural Crawford County for several years. She worked in Leeds in Sioux City as part owner of Murphy's Confectionery Store and also for Northwestern Bell in Sioux City for several years.
She married Martin Flanigan May 17, 1930. The couple farmed in Crawford County. He died Dec. 25, 1971. She moved into Mapleton in 1972 and had been a resident of the Dunlap Care Center since March 1987. Mrs. Flanigan was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and St. Mary's Guild.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Donald (JoAnne) Seufert of Ute; three sons, Joseph of Mapleton, Robert of Charter Oak and Donald of Mapleton; a sister, Mrs. Ellen Bargelt of Mapleton; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Henry A. Christiansen (1898 - 1997)
Henry A. Christiansen was born June 8, 1898, the son of Anton and Wilhelmina Prien Christiansen. He died at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, Sunday, July 20, 1997 at the age of ninety-nine.Henry was born in Soldier Township, Crawford County and baptized in Christ on June 26, 1898 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township and later confirmed there on April 5, 1914. He received his education in rural schools in Nebraska and South Dakota, with the majority in Crawford County, Iowa. In his earlier years, Henry helped his father on the farm, along with his brother, Julius and brother-in-law, William Meyer. Sometime later he farmed with his brother, Louie. He was also employed by the Armour Creamery in Denison.
On February 20, 1924, Henry was united in marriage to Anna Adeline Wiese in Denison, Iowa and were blessed with three daughters and three sons. The couple farmed in various locations in Crawford County, until retirement in 1969, at which time he was employed by the ASCS Office in Denison, sealing corn.
Henry was a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church, Deloit, serving in various organizations. After moving to Denison in 1971, he later transferred his membership to Zion Lutheran Church. Henry moved to the Eventide Lutheran Home in November of 1990.
Henry was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Addy in 1976; one daughter, Shirley Gehring; one grandson, Scott Christiansen; one great grandson, Mark Brotherson; six brothers, Julius, Ben, Albert, John, Louie and Otto Christiansen; and two sisters, Lena Meyers and Mary Evers.
Survivors include two daughters, Phyllis Brotherson of Denison; Beverly Hammer of Boone; three sons, Bonard Christiansen and his wife, Beverly of Schleswig, Dale Christiansen and his wife, Mildred of Glenwood; Melroy Christiansen and his wife, Betty of Kiron; twenty-two grandchildren, forty-eight great-grandchildren and forty-one great-greatgrandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 P.M., Wednesday, July 23, 1997 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and congregational hymn "I Know that My Redeemer Lives". Those serving as pallbearers were: Howard Brotherson, Steve Christiansen, Daryn Christiansen, Dana Christiansen, LaDonna Miller and Eric Hammer. Henry C. Hadenfeld (1886 - 1983)
Henry C. Hadenfeld was born on a farm in East Boyer Township, Crawford County, Iowa, April 28, 1886, the son of Andreas and Wilhemina Neumann Hadenfeld. When he was three years old the family moved to Germany where they lived for five years before returning to the farm in Crawford County. Henry was educated in the rural schools near the farm where he was raised. He was baptized when he was an infant and later confirmed into the Lutheran Faith.Following his schooling, Henry moved to Havre, MT, where he spent several years employed as a sheepherder. Later he returned to Crawford County and on July 22, 1915, was united in marriage with Mildred Mahoney at the Lutheran Parsonage in Denison. They made their home on a farm east of Denison which is now Yellow Smoke Park. There they raised their seven children and for many years operated a dairy.
While living on the farm, Henry was very involved with several township and county organizations. For many years he served as an East Boyer Township Trustee and also served as treasurer of the East Boyer Rural School District until its demise. He was a charter member of the Crawford County Farm Bureau and in 1935 was one of the original five members of the Agricultural Adjustment Association in Crawford County. Henry was also a lifetime member and very involved in the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison having served as an Elder and was president of the Voter's Assembly for many years.
Henry retired in 1958 and they moved into Denison. Mildred died June 3, 1968, and Henry continued to reside at his home in Denison until March of 1978, when he moved to the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison. He died at Eventide, Nov. 14, 1983. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 97 years 6 months, and 16 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mildred, one brother, Erich Hadenfeld, one sister Margaret Buchanan, and one grandson, Robert Hadenfeld.
Henry is survived by his seven children, Arnold Hadenfeld of Mountain Home, AK, Marianna, Mrs. Joel Maupin of Denison, Verna Pieper of Denison, Dorothy Williams of Whitmore, CA, Erich Hadenfeld of Salem, OR, Henry Hadenfeld Jr., of Simi Valley, CA, and Betty, Mrs. Larry Johnson of Kansas City, KS, 19 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, one brother, Andreas Hadenfeld; of Fort Collins, CO, and four sisters, Elsa, Mrs. Carl Berndt, Hermina Young, Anna Lochmiller, and Christine Wittmaack all of Denison. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 A.M., Nov. 17, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with the Rev. Jack D. Heck officiating. Comfort in music was provided by Robert Arnold singing, "How Great Thou Art" and "Asleep In Jesus" with Mrs. Fred Rabe serving as organist. Pallbearers included Ralph Hennings, Ralph Danielsen, Raymond Berndt, Melvin Wittmaack, Archie Mahoney, and Fred Hoist. Interment was in the Lutheran Cemetery in Denison. The Pfannebecker-Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Henry Hamann (1884 - 1970)
Funeral services for Henry Hamann, age 86, of Ida Grove were held Saturday, November 7 (1970), at 1:30 P. M., with Rev. Alfred Pautsch officiating. Burial was made in the Morgan Township Cemetery at Schleswig.He was born February 12, 1884 in Crawford County, He married Anna Janssen in January, 1956 . Mr. Hamann was a retired farmer having moved to Ida Grove 25 years ago.
Survivors include; Daughters, Mrs. August (Clara) Senhen of Ida Grove, Mrs. Florence Krohnke of Schleswig, and Emma Petersen of Missouri Brothers: Ernest of Mitchell, South Dakota, Carl of Utah. There are five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Henry Hans Wilken (1880 - 1970)
Funeral services for Henry H. Wilken were held on Tuesday, June 23, 1970 at the St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts with the Rev. F. A. Wiese officiating. Mrs. Loren Lee served as organist and the congregation sang the hymns "Rock of Ages," and "I Am But A Stranger Here."Henry Hans Wilken, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wilken, was born October 29th, 1880 in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. At the age of 30, he came to the United States. The first year, he lived with friends at Davenport, Iowa. Then the next year, moved to Ida County where he worked for others for a number of years. In 1928, he bought a farm in Crawford County and farmed from 1928-1951.
He was married to Margaret Dreller in 1927. In 1951, the couple retired to Ricketts where they made their home. He died on this past Saturday at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
He was a life long member of the Lutheran Church. At the time of his death, he held membership in St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Ricketts.
He is survived toy Ms wife Margaret; 4 children, Erna Brandt of Davenport, Henry of Holstein, Annie Anspach of Montevideo, lowa, and Herbert Speth of Schaller. Two brothers: Carl of Denison and Matt of Schleswig. Two sisters: Dora of Davenport and Maggie of Battle Creek, and 14 grandchildren.
He attained the age of 80 years, 7 months, and 21 days.
Pallbearers were: Henry Meyer, Kenneth Baak, Paul Claussen, Viktor Schwarz, Meinert Jensen and Wilbert Langholdt. Interment was in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery.

Henry Ludeman (1891 - 1978)
Henry Ludeman was born on August 29, 1891 in Germany, the son of Johann and Anna Ludeman. He died on Monday, July 10, 1978 at Crawford County Memorial Hospital at the age of 86.Henry was raised and educated in Germany. He was united in marriage to Louise Thomas in Germany. Together they came to the United States in 1929 making their home near Denison. Henry helped other farmers in the area for a short time before he owned his own farm until 1965 when he retired and moved to Denison. He has since continued to make Denison his home.
In addition to his parents, Henry was preceeded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include his wife Louise of Denison, two daughters, Anita, Mrs. Werner Rath and Magda, Mrs. Leslie Sahl, both of Denison and one son Ernest of Nevada. Also by 14 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, one great great granddaughter and three brothers, John of Great Bend, Kans., Wilhelm and Adolph, both of Germany.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 12, 1978 at 2 p.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home, Denison. Burial was in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery. The Rev. Gary Hoffstetter of Zion Lutheran Church officiated at the services. Pallbearers included grandsons, LaVern Ludeman, Robert Rath, Everett Miller, Donald Hodne, Kenneth Sahl and Wayne Sahl. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Henry Ott (1884 - 1963)
Funeral services for Henry Ott were held Monday at the Immanuel Lutheran church. The choir sang two hymns and Rev. F. A. Wiese read the following obituary:Henry Ott, son of Gus and Lizzie Ott, was born north east of Schleswig on August 17, 1884. He lived all of his life in this community working on a number of farms. He was baptized and confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran church on November 25, 1951 and remained a faithful member of the congregation. He unexpectedly died last Friday. He was the last of his immediate family.
He attained to 79 years, two months and 14 days.
Interment was made in the Morgan cemetery. The pallbearers were Octavus Grill, Eldor Petersen, Max Hollander, C. J. Friedrichsen, Henry Aldag and John H. Moeller.

Herman Claus Jepsen (1892 - 1984)
Herman Claus Jepsen was born on December 7, 1892 in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Fred and Margaret Marquardt Jepsen. He died on Wednesday morning, March 14, 1984, at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison at the age of 91.Herman was raised on a family farm. He received his formal education in the rural schools near his home. He was baptized and later confirmed at what is now known as the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, of which he remained a life-long member.
On March 2, 1917, Herman was united in marriage to Dora Beeck in Schleswig. Together they made their home on a farm in Hanover Township. After their retirement, they continued to make their home in Hanover Township on the farm where he lived 65 years of his life.
Mrs. Jepsen passed away in 1965. For the past two years, Herman has spent the winter months at a nursing care facility in Denison. In the spring, he would return to his farm in Hanover.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Herman was preceded in death by two grandchildren, four brothers, Henry, Fred, William and Edward and one sister, Emma.
Survivors include, one daughter, Irene Mrs. Theodore Abbe of Schleswig, five sons, Fred of Schleswig, Herman of Ricketts, Victor of Denison, Vernon of Ricketts and Ed of Denison. Also surviving are thirty grandchildren, thirty-one great-grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Ella Kuehnhold and Mrs. Amanda Pickel both of Denison and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Elsa Jepsen and Mrs. Lillian Beeck.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 17, 1984, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery. Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Mrs. Evelyn Johnson served as organist with Mr. Art Beeck as soloist. Musical selections included "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "Nearer My God To Thee". Pallbearers were Alfred Jepsen, Edward Jepsen, Arnold Jepsen, Vernon Kuehnhold, Melvin Kuehnhold and Robert Beeck.

Herman Klinker (1889 - 1978)
Herman Klinker was born on March 8, 1889 at Schleswig-Holstein, Germany the son of Claus and Marie Klinker. He died on Sunday, July 16, 1978 at Eventide Lutheran Home, Denison, at the age of 89.Herman came to the United States at age 18 making his home in Crawford County. For a period of time he worked for other farmers in the area.
On February 22, 1912 he was united in marriage to Marie Maack at Hanover Township. Together they farmed Marie's home place which they purchased from her family. In 1945 they retired and moved to Denison where Herman has since made his home. For the past few years he has been a resident of Eventide Lutheran Home. Herman was a long time member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and served as an elder for many years.
In addition to his parents, Herman was preceded in death by one son, one daughter, one brother and two sisters.
Survivors include, his wife Marie of Denison, two sons, Herbert of Denison; Walter of Missouri Valley and one daughter, Mrs. Arlene Hennings of Ricketts. Also by sixteen grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren and one sister Mrs. Alwina Carstens of Germany.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 18, 1978 at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Kenneth Haydon officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Peter Pickel, Walter Maack, August Maack, Leonard Wiegel, Herbert Namanny and Richard Dorale. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Herman Henry Quandt (1892 - 1990)
Herman Henry Quandt was born March 3, 1892, tye son of Hermann and Albertina Meseck Quandt and died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, Dec. 9, 1990, at the age of 98 years.Herman was born on the family farm in Hanover Township where he grew up, and received his formal education at St. Paul's Lutheran School in Hanover Township. His service to his Lord began as he was baptized April 17, 1892 and he reaffirmed his faith when he was confirmed April 8, 1906 by the Rev. C. Runge.
While still young, he worked on the farm with his family until March 28, 1918, when he entered the Army. He served as a cook at Ft. Des Moines, Iowa, and Ft. Riley, Kan. Upon discharge from the service Oct. 22, 1919, he returned to the family farm where he continued his farming career.
Sept. 23, 1923, Herman and Emma Kroll were united in marriage in Charter Oak. They made their home on a farm east of Charter Oak where Herman farmed with his brother, Emil, until his death in 1933. In 1959, Herman and Emma retired and moved to Denison where they enjoyed their retirement. Herman enjoyed occupying his spare time caring for his flower garden. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, and the American Legion Post No. 8 of Denison.
Herman was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 1978; one great granddaughter; six brothers: Max, Otto, Emil, Charlie, William and George; and two sisters, Anna Henning and Emma Schneider.
Survivors include one son, Melvin and his wife, Marian of Denison; one daughter, Lois Goslar and her husband, Edward Jr. ofUte;eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and one sister-in-law, Alvina Quandt ofArion.
Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Wednesday, Dec. 12, at 10:30 a.m. Pastor Kurt Kaiser and Pastor Philip E. Bloch officiated at the services with interment in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison. Mrs. Karen Kahl was organist for congregational singing. Selections were "Onward Christian Soldiers," "Let Us All With Gladsome Voice" and "Stand Up! Stand Up for Jesus." Honorary pallbearers were Leona Jacobs, Colleen Nissen, Venetta Spreng and Bernadeen Steinkamp. Serving as pallbearers were Henry Ketelsen, Albert Kluver, Richard Petersen, Glen Quandt, Harold Quandt and Martin Schneider. Military Rites were led by V.F.W. Ninus L. Hunt Post No. 2504 of Denison. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Service in Denison.

Herman L. Knief (1899 - 1992)
Herman L. Knief was born on a farm near Mapleton, Iowa, July 10, 1899, the son of Herman and Doris Rohlfs Knief. He was baptized at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and later confirmed at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton.As a young boy the family moved to Treynor, Iowa, where he was raised, receiving his formal education in the local rural schools. Following his schooling and prior to his marriage he was employed as a hired hand in the area.
On February 1, 1922, Herman was united in marriage with Irma G. Larson at Omaha, Nebraska. Their union was blessed with three children, Cyrenus, Gloria, and Marian. They made their home on the farm four miles south of Kiron until moving to Kiron in 1944. After moving to Kiron, Herman continued to farm with his son and together they operated the Knief and Son Milk Service. Herman's whole life centered around farming and he especially enjoyed horses and breaking them to ride. Dancing was a favorite pastime of Herman and Irma and they would often sponsor dances.
In 1991, Herman entered the Colonial Manor in Odebolt and since February of 1992 he had resided at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa. Herman died at Eventide early Thursday morning, November 12, 1992. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 93 years, 4 months, and two days. He was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Kiron.
Including his parents, Herman was preceded in death by three brothers, Henry, Otto, and Adolf Knief, two sisters, Tillle Schmidt and Mathilda Mass, and one great granddaughter, Melissa VanSickler.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of seventy years, Irma Knief of Kiron, one son, Cyrenus Knief and wife Jeannetta of Deloit, two daughters, Gloria and husband Gene Bergman of Kiron, Iowa and Marian and husband Wayne Peterson of Fort Dodge, Iowa, seven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, ten step grandchildren, twenty-four step great grandchildren, five step great great grandchildren, and two sisters, Elnora Rodenburg of Minden, Iowa, and Mary Fahrenkrug of Treynor, Iowa. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 14, 1992, at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Kiron, Iowa, with the Rev. Victor N. Johnson officiating. Music for the service included the congregation singing "Children of the Heavenly Father", and Katherine Bergren singing "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "How Great Thou Art". Mrs. Mervin Buller served as organist. Casket bearers included Gayle Knief, Gary Knief, Craig Bergman, Jay Heiden, Clay Bergren and Willis VanSickler. Interment was in the Kiron Cemetery at Kiron, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Hertha Anna (Schade) Gehring (1892 - 1981)
Hertha Anna Gehring was born on March 17, 1892 near Denison, the daughter of Ludwig and Wiebke Jess Schade. She died May 7, 1981, at Eventide Lutheran Home, Denison at the age of 89.Hertha was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She spent her early years on a family farm near Denison, attending the rural schools near her home.
On December 18, 1912, Hertha was united in marriage to Wilhelm Gehring at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. They made their home on a farm near Denison. Later they moved to the Dunlap area where they farmed for a short time before returning to the Denison community. In 1946, they retired and moved into Denison. After Mr. Gehring's death in 1974, Hertha became a resident of Eventide Lutheran Home.
In addition to her parents and husband, Hertha was preceded in death by one son Victor, one daughter Lucille, one great-grandson, two brothers and one sister.
Survivors include two sons, William L. and Louis, both of Denison and two daughters, Adele (Mrs. Joseph) DeConnick of Denison and. Arlene (Mrs. Dwight) Jones also of Denison, eight grand-children, 15 great-grand-children and seven great-great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held May 9, at 1:30 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Jack D. Heck officiated at the services. Hertha Catherine (Boysen) Johannsen (1894 - 1984)
Hertha Catherine Johannsen was born on March 15, 1894, near Deloit, Iowa, the daughter of Broder and Lena Ehlers Boysen. She died on Monday, Jan 7, at the Fairway Convalescent Home in Fullerton: Calif., at the age of 90.Hertha spent her formative years on a family farm in Deloit. She received her formal education in the rural schools near her home.
On February 16, 1916, she was united in marriage to Paul Johannsen. Together they made their first home on a farm in Goodrich Township. In 1919 they moved to a farm west of Denison.
In 1957 Hertha moved to Fullerton, Calif., where she was employed for several years by the Avon company. She was an active member in the First Christian Church of Fullerton. Hertha was also active as a volunteer worker at the Fullerton senior citizens center.
In addition to her parents; Hertha was preceded in death by one brother, Henry, and one grandson, Robert Jones in infancy.
Survivors include three daughters, Vernette Steinkuehler of Harlan, Vera Mae Hogencamp of Placentia, Calif., and Violette, Mrs. Jim Jones of Fullerton, Calif., and one son, Val Jean of Schleswig. Also surviving are sixteen grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and one sister, Ella Hansen of Eventide Lutheran Home, nieces and nephews, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Jan. 11, (1984), at 10:30 a.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery. The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist with Henry Henningsen as soloist. Hymns included Just As I Am and Just A Closer Walk With Thee. Serving as pallbearers were Abe Gronau, Terry Skarin, Charlie Slater, Wayne Baker, Vernie Lutz, and Eddie Kluver. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Hertha Wilhelmina (Mundt) Steckelberg (1898 - 1981)
Hertha Wilhelmina Steckelberg was born on Oct. 2, 1898 near Manilla, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Minnie Homeier Mundt. She died March 20, 1981 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa at the age of 82.Hertha spent her early years on a family farm. She received her formal education in the rural schools near her home. She was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
On April 9, 1919, Hertha was united in marriage to William Steckelberg at Manilla. Together they farmed in the Denison area. In 1936 they moved to a farm in East Boyer Township where they farmed until 1963. At the time of their retirement they moved to Denison. Hertha was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and a past member of Zion Ladies Aid.
In addition to her parents, Hertha was preceded in death by one daughter, Fern, three grandchildren, four brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include, her husband, William of Denison, one son Kenneth of Manilla, and one daughter Shirley, Mrs. Martin Schneider of Denison. Also by eleven grandchildren, eleven greatgrandchildren and three sisters, Ida Thomsen and Martha Steinkuehler, both of Denison and Gertrude Long of Omaha, Nebr.
Funeral services were held on March 24, at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Burial was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. The Rev. Jack Heck officiated at the services. Pallbearers were David Kult, Roger Peters, Larry Steckelberg, Steve Steckelberg, Donald Petersen and Greg Townsend. Hilda C. (Boger) Kahl (1895 - 1987)
Hilda, daughter of Fritz and Ida Schluter Boger, was born April 3, 1895 in Paradise Township, Crawford County, la. She attended rural schools near her home and on February 16, 1916 she was united in marriage with Otto Kahl.They farmed in the Schleswig and Ricketts area until 1946 when they retired and moved to Westside. Hilda's husband, Otto, died on December 16, 1953. While living in Westside Hilda worked in the school hot lunch program until her retirement in 1967. In 1971 Hilda moved to the Terrace Apartments in Manning where she continued to live until 1984 when she entered the Manning Plaza Nursing Home.
During her lifetime Hilda was a member of the Zion Lutheran Churches in Denison, Arcadia, and Manning. She was also a member of the Ladies Aid in Arcadia and Westside Cemetery Association. Hilda's first joy was her family followed by many enjoyable times playing cards with her friends.
For several years Hilda's health had been failing and she died on Sunday, May 10, 1987 at the Manning General Hospital, Manning, la. at the age of 92 years, 1 month and 7 days.
Besides her husband, Otto, she was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters; Ella Schramm, Minnie Petersen, and Amanda Hintz, and by two brothers; Herman Boger and William Boger.
Hilda is survived by three children; Luella and her husband, Arnold Brus, of Manning, Helen and her husband, Roy Fischer, of Brainerd, Minn., and Darlene and her husband, Wilmer Wiese, of Vail. By eight grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, two sisters; Anna Koch and Hattie Kahl of Denison, one sister-in-law, Lucinda Kahl, of Charter Oak and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held May 13, at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church, Manning, with Pastor Jack Dahl of the Zion Lutheran Church of Arcadia, officiating. The organist was Paula Weiss. Interment was in the Westside cemetery at Westside. Pallbearers were Arlan Jans, James Meyer, Wayne Brus, Dale Musfeldt, Richard Fischer and Marcel Hayes. Honorary pallbearers were Dean Hargens and Lt. Col. Robert Brus.

Hilda (Miller) Jepsen (1898 - 1981)
Hilda Jepsen was born Aug. 30, 1898 in Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Hans and Katherina Jochimsen Miller. She died June 29, 1981 at Eventide Lutheran Home, Denison, at the age of 82.Hilda was reared on a family farm. She received her formal education in the rural schools near her home. On Dec. 16, 1916, Hilda was united in marriage to Herman Iwen in Crawford County. To this union a daughter Joyce was born.
On Aug. 15, 1938, Hilda was united in marriage to Henry Jepsen. Together they made their home in Schleswig. After Mr. Jepsen's death in 1950, Hilda moved to Omaha in 1951. Later she returned to Denison. For the past few years she has been a resident of Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison due to ill health.
Survivors include, one daughter, Joyce, Mrs. Orlen Korner of Omaha, Neb., and two granddaughters, Renee and Kimberly.
Funeral services were held July 2, at 2 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery. The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Pallbearers were Ralph Miller, Carl Miller, Ray Miller, Eldred Gronau, Ace Nelson and Louie Mengwasser. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Schleswig.

Hilda (Roeh) Salmon (1896 - 1985)
Hilda Salmon was born Jan. 6, 1896, in Denison, the daughter of Henry and Emma Ernst Roeh. She died Monday evening, Sept. 23, 1985, at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison at the age of 89.Hilda spent her formative years in Denison. She received her formal education at Zion Lutheran School.
Hilda was united in marriage to Emery Salmon on April 28, 1921. Together they made their home in Denison. Emery died in 1941. Hilda continued to make Denison her home until entering the Eventide Lutheran home in November of 1979 due to failing health. Hilda was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.
In addition to her parents and husband, Hilda was preceded in death by four brothers, Arlo, Alfred, Martin, and Donald, and five sisters, Henrietta, Alma, Augusta, Leota, and Theresa.
Survivors include one daughter LaDonna, Mrs. Harris Maas of Denison, and two granddaughters, Mary, Mrs. Alan Disburg of Denison, and Ruth, Mrs. James Pattavina of Lincoln, Neb. She is further survived by great grandchildren, Christopher and Ann Bliesman of Denison, and Sara and Mary Pattavina of Lincoln, Neb., and one sister, Marie, Mrs. Donald Vahl of Cedar Rapids, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Interment was in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery near Denison. The Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services and graveside rites. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist for the services. Hymns for the services included "Crossing The Bar" and "Just As I Am." Serving as pallbearers were Harwin Jess, Alan Disburg, Christopher Bliesman, James Pattavina, Harris Maas, and Richard Mendlik. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Hilda Wilhelmina (Hantelmann) Lutz (1896 - 1975)
Hilda Wilhelmina Lutz, Denison, daughter of Henry and Dora Sundermeyer Hantelmann was born March 5, 1896, on a farm near Dubuque, and died at Crawford County Memorial Hospital, June 9, 1975, after a prolonged illness, at the age of 79 years.Mrs. Lutz was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith. She attended High School in Dubuque, and Teachers College in Cedar Falls. Upon completion of her college work she taught in rural schools in Dubuque County.
On July 2, 1919, she was united in marriage to Paul Lutz at Sherrill and they settled on a farm north of Denison, where she lived until the time of her death.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Clarence, a grandson, and one sister, Esther.
Survivors include her husband, Paul, six sons, Arthur of Denison, Alfred of Omaha, Nebr., Donald of Denison, Marion at home, Vernon of Kiron, and Ervin of Denison, twelve grandchildren and two step grandchildren, a brother, Alphonse of Sherrill, and a sister Ethel, (Mrs. Wilfred Gibbons) of Dubuque.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., June 12, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, with Pastor Robert Maschke officiating. Pallbearers were her grandsons, Carl Lutz, Craig Lutz, David Lutz, Jeffrey Lutz, Robert Putzier and Harry Schlotfeld. Interment was made in the Lutheran Cemetery, with Huebner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Hugo Jacob Jensen (1898 - 1980)
Hugo Jacob Jensen was born onMarch 1, 1898 in Morgan Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Jacob and Lena Struck Jensen. He died on Thursday afternoon, May 1, 1980, at his home in Schleswig, Iowa, at the age of 82.Hugo received his early education in the rural schools near his home. Later he attended the Schleswig High School. He was baptized and confirmed in the Frieden's Evangelical Church. After the completion of his education he assisted his father with farming.
On September 23, 1924, Hugo was united in marriage to Adela C. Johannsen. They made their home in Soldier Township until 1949 when they retired and built a new home in Schleswig.
Hugo was active in his church serving as treasurer of the United Church of Christ for four years. He served as a rural schools director for eight years and for twelve years served on the Schleswig Town Council. Hugo and his wife Adela celebrated many anniversaries with their family and friends including their Golden and fifty-fifth.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Lena Jensen and three brothers, Rudolph, William and Bernhard.
Survivors include his wife Adela of Schleswig, one daughter, Joyce and her husband William J. Petersen of Schleswig, and three grandchildren, Timothy and his wife Cindy,.Joel and Roxanne . Also by two brothers, Edward of Ida Grove and Frank of Schleswig and one sister, Mrs. Delia Paulsen of Correctionville, Iowa.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 3, 1980, at 2:00 p.m. at the United Church of Christ, Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Serving as pallbearers were Burdell Jensen, Norman Paulsen, Ross Jensen, Gerald Hedstrom, John Ehler and DeWayne Ehler. Honorary pallbearers included Dr. K. M. Johannsen, LeRoy Schagt, Kenneth Winsor and Murlin Johannsen.

Hulda A. (Hesse) Hottendorf (1897 - 1981)
Hulda A. Hottendorf was born on March 12, 1897 in Seguin, Tex., the daughter of August and Ernestine Demuth Hesse. She died July 15, 1981, at Clarkson Hospital, Omaha, Nebr., at the age of 84.Hulda moved to Iowa with her family at an early age. They made their home in Monona County. She received her formal education in the rural schools near her home.
On Jan. 28, 1918, Hulda was united in marriage to Oscar Hottendorf at Charter Oak. Together they made their first home in Monona County. Later they made their home on a farm near Vail and then Stockholm Township. Before moving to Denison in 1936, they made their home in Manilla for a number of years. Mr. Hottendorf died in 1963, and since that time, Hulda has continued to make Denison her home.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Hulda was preceded in death by two sons, Raymond and Robert, two daughters, Rosa Lien and Margaret, one brother and two sisters.
Survivors include, two sons, Leonard of Baker, Ore., and Milroy of Denison, three daughters, Clara, Mrs. LeRoy Winey of Denison, Lucille, Mrs. Chester Lingle of Corona, Calif., and Mrs. Mabel Tech of Dow City. Also by 14 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild and two sisters, Mrs. Louise Kruger of Denison and Mrs. Ida Kollbaum of Anthon.
Funeral services were held July 18 at 10:30 a.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home, Denison. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Howard Johnson officiated at the services. Pallbearers were Wayne Kruger, Les Kruger, Larry Tech, Allen Tech, Rick Tech and Keith Segebart. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Ida Anna (Pithan) Schultz (1895 - 1982)
Ida Anna Schultz was born on April 18, 1895 in Stockholm Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of John and Wilhelmina Giermann Pithan. She died on Oct. 18, 1982 at the Manilla Manor, Manilla, at the age of 87.Ida was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She spent her early years on a farm in Stockholm Township. Ida was educated in the rural schools near her home.
On Feb. 13, 1918, Ida was united in marriage to Willia Schultz in Stockholm Township. Together they farmed near Schleswig until 1930 when they moved to Denison. In 1974, Mr. Schultz died. Later in 1976, Ida moved to Denison. In 1974, Mr. Schultz died. Later in 1976, Ida moved to Aspinwall to be near her children. Due to failing health, she entered the Manilla Manor in July of 1981.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Ida was preceded in death by one granddaughter, one great grandson, two brothers and one sister.
Survivors include, three daughters, Luella, Mrs. Carl Musfeldt of Aspinwall, Irene, Mrs. Ivan Genzen of Manilla and Norma, Mrs. James Olry of Richmond, Ca.; six grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother, Henry Pithan of Los Angeles, Ca.; and three sisiters, Henrietta Pithan of Denison, Mrs. Lilly Schultz of Kiron and Esther, Mrs. John Stehr of Odebolt.
Funeral services were held Oct. 21, at 1:30 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery. The Rev. Edward Heinicke of Manilla officiated at the services. Mrs. Paul Wiegert served as organist with hymns, What A Friend We Have In Jesus and Just Am I Am. Pallbearers included, Fred Branning Jr., Brent Branning, Keith Musfeldt, William Genzen, Verne Caldwell and John Bass. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Ida Christine Storm (1897 - 1986)
Ida Christine Storm was born on Feb. 4, 1897 in Otter Creek Twp. near Schleswig, Iowa, the daughter of Claus and Minnie Zage Storm. She died on Dec 22, 1986 at Eventide Nursing Home at the age of 89 years 10 months and 18 days.Ida was baptised in 1899 and confirmed in 1912 in the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison by Rev. William Freese. She spent her early years on a farm near Schleswig moving to Denison in 1931. Due to the death of her mother when she was only three years old she was raised by her grandparents. She later made her home with her brother Fred. She entered Eventide Home in July, 1983.
She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her brother Fred Storm, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Services were held at 10:30 a. m. Dec. 24, at the Zion Lutheran Church with Rev. Donald Fraker and Rev. James Ristvedt officiating. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist with the congregation singing Rock Of Ages, I Know That My Redeemer Lives and Beautiful Savior. Serving as pallbearers were John Meggers, Ben Luetjens, Carl Petersen, Lorenz Petersen, Fred Berndt and Walter R. Huebner. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Ida (Arndt) Leuth (1889 - 1979)
Ida, daughter of William and Louise Reimers Arndt, was born March 1, 1889 in Buck Grove, Iowa. She attended the country schools near her home.She was united in marriage with William F. Lueth on Oct. 20, 1910. They farmed South of Manilla until his death in 1955. Ida moved to Manilla in 1957, where she has made her home ever since. For the past two years she has lived in the Manilla Manor Nursing Home where she died Feb. 11, 1979, at the age of 89 years, 11 months and 10 days.
She was preceded in death by her husband, by a son Vernon and his wife, Elanor, a grandson, one great granddaughter and also by two brothers and one sister.
She is survived by the following children, LeRoy of Manilla; Waldon of Manilla; Irene, Mrs. Floyd Grage of Manilla and Arlene, Mrs. Amos Justice of Jefferson. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters, Tillie, Mrs. Fred Spies of Hinton; Amelia, Mrs. Chris Hahn of Hinton; Albert Arndt of Lawton; John Arndt of Sioux City; Mrs. Ella Snyder of Hinton and Rosina, Mrs. Frank Ketzbach of Hinton, as well as by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ida was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Manilla of the United Presbyterian Women and a charter member of the Manilla home Community Club. Funeral services were held Feb. 15 at 11 a.m. at the Ohde Funeral Home, Manilla. Officiating was Rev. Raymond Feyes. Organist was Mrs. Ray Saunders. Pallbearers were Alvin Miller, Leo Rasmussen, Frank Macumber, Orlando Hansen, Daryl Chapman, Dennis Christensen. Interment was in the Nishnabotna Cemetery. Ohde Funeral Home of Manilla was in charge of arrangements.
