ELVIRA'S NEW SCHOOL HOUSE IS DEDICATED
Source: The Clinton Herald, Feb. 12, 1921
With appropriate exercises, which began at 1:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon, following a picnic dinner served at 11:30 o'clock in the halls of the building, Elvira's new consolidated school building was dedicated before an audience of between 300 and 350 patrons of the district, which includes 21 1-4 sections. The program was carried out as previously arranged.
It began with an invocation by Rev. Mr. Yates, followed by the opening address by Superintendent C. W. Stevenson of the school. A song by a high school chorus was followed by an address by Miss Brekke, home demonstration agent, whose splendid talk was followed by an Indian drill and a "Grandmother" drill by the pupils of Miss Knott's room. Chris Joehnk then delivered an interesting talk and L. O. Wise, county agricultural agent, gave a splendid talk on the agricultural possibilities.
A flag drill by the pupils of Miss Mulholland's room preceded a brief address by County Superintendent of Schools, C. E. Cozzens, who introduced the principal speaker of the afternoon, Macy Campbell, head of the department of rural education at the Iowa Teachers' college at Cedar Falls, who emphasized the value of the rural consolidated school.
The new building was erected by Contractors Ladehoff & Miller of Clinton and is of brick construction and modern in every respect. It has steam heat, a fan system of ventilation, a private water works system, electric lights, furnished with current by the high power transmission line, and all modern conveniences.
Accomodations include four class rooms, two recitation rooms, an assembly room, a gymnasium and a domestic science and manual traning room. Four teachers in addition to Superintendent Stevenson are employed. The superintendent is furnished with a modern home on the school's five acre plot of ground.
