McCormick,
Charles, Merchant of Manchester was born at DeWitt, February 17, 1870, son of
Joseph and Jane (Boyle) McCormick. He
was educated in the Manchester schools. In
1900, in association with A. W. Stearns as partner, the Stearns and McCormick
Department Store was founded. Later
a furniture store was added and this partnership continued actively until Mr.
Stearns' death in 1949. This was
the longest continuous active partnership in Delaware County and one of the
longest in the State. Mr. McCormick
is actively engaged in the business at the present time. He is also secretary of the Manchester and Oneida Railroad and past
president of the Manchester Commercial Club and of the Delaware County Fair
Society. He was the first secretary
of the Manchester Fire Department. During
World War II he was a member of the Delaware County Draft Board from 1940 to
1946. A Democrat, he is past
treasurer of the County Committee. He
is a member of the Manchester Council Knights of Columbus and of the Chamber of
Commerce. He is a communicant of
the Roman Catholic Church. Recreations
are sports and travel. Mr.
McCormick was married at Manchester in June of 1900, to Mary Powers, daughter of
Thomas and Margaret (Keyes) Powers, pioneer Delaware County farmers. Their children are: Dr. Mary J. McCormick, professor of social casework
at Loyola University, Chicago; Alice, wife of Eugene Bulkley, Dubuque; and
Harold C. McCormick, a present associate in the furniture business.
