Spanish-American War 

We have had two wonderful Bibles submitted to us with information regarding Company L and the Spanish-American war.  Jean's Bible states that the a bible was given to all the 'boys' May May 25, 1898.  The Bibles contain signatures of men in the regiment.  Along with Jean's Bible she sent several photos.  Lynn's has a short diary of her ancestor's time spent in the Army.

History

From: "Historical and Biographical Souvenir of the 49th Iowa U.S. Volunteer Infantry.  Illustrated with scenes of camp life." (Jacksonville, FL 1898)

"Company L. was organized in June, 1892, as part of the First
Regiment of the National Guard of the State of Iowa, with C.L. ROOT
as Captain, F. L. HOLLERAN, First Lieutenant, and Geo. M. MICHELSON (now deceased) [see end], Second Lieutenant.  When the call for volunteers was made, Company L immediately responded and was mustered into United States service in Des Moines, Iowa, on June 2d, 1898.  Captain ROOT failing to pass the examination, Captain C. C. McCOLLUM, the Regimental Adjutant of the First Regiment, Iowa National Guard, was elected Captain May 29th, 1898.  First Lieutenant F.L. HOLLERAN also failed to pass the examination, and was succeeded by George M. MICHELSON, then Second Lieutenant.  John B. NATTINGER, then sergeant, was promoted to Second Lieutenant.  Company L was the only company from Iowa to attend the unveiling of Logan's Monument in Chicago. The Company is composed of a fine body of men, and was one of the best drilled in attendance and won much applause."

"Second Lieutenant John B. NATTINGER (acting at present as First and
Second Lieutenants, owing to the death of First Lieutenant Geo. M.
MICHELSON) was born in Lyons, Iowa, twenty-four years ago.  He was
brought up and educated in the public schools of that place.  Joined
Company L when organized in June, 1892.  Was elected Second
Lieutenant in June, 1898.  He is a good officer, and in civil life is
a dry goods clerk."

"First Lieutenant and Assistant Surgeon E. L. MARTINDALE was born in 1868 in Whiteside County, Ill., and graduated at University of Michigan in 1894, taking up the practice of medicine at Clinton, Iowa, which he gave up to enter the service and Forty-Ninth Iowa Volunteer Infantry.  Lieutenant MARTINDALE was appointed Assistant Surgeon on April 26th, 1898, and has proven himself a most popular officer.  He served in the First Iowa National Guard as Assistant Surgeon for four years."

"Third Battalion Adjutant, First Lieutenant Wm. A. SIDDLE, was born at Clinton, Iowa, and is 29 years of age.  He has followed the lumber business successfully for some years.  On mustering in of the Forty-ninth Iowa Volunteer Infantry Lieutenant SIDDLE was appointed  Battalion Adjutant of the Third Battalion, which position he has successfully filled."

"Captain C. C. McCOLLUM was born August 14, 1853, at Detroit, Michigan, and followed the mercantile business in St. Johns, St. Louis and Grand Rapids, Mich., for some years.  Since 1880 he has been in the employ of the Chicago Northwestern Railway Company, in the accounting department, and occupied the position as store keeper at Clinton, Iowa, which position he immediately gave up on the call for volunteers--April 25th, 1898--and reported for duty at Des Moines, April 26, 1898, and was elected Captain May 29th, 1898.  He was connected with Company B, of the Second Regiment of the Michigan National Guard for about four years, attaining considerable experience in military tactics.  Captain McCOLLUM had proven himself a most efficient officer, and is very popular with his men, in whom he takes a great deal of pride, and is always looking after their welfare."

"IN MEMORIAM:  Private Henry C. HANSEN,age 22; born at Clinton, Iowa, died October 1st, 1898, at 2d Division Hospital,Camp Cuba Libre of the Forty-Ninth Iowa volunteers have died since itsorganization.  (Note: This was written before the end of the war.) Thecause of death is Typhoid Fever and the place at Second Division Hospital, CampCuba Libre, Jacksonville, Fla.)"

"First Lieutenant George M. MICHELSON; born in Lyons, Iowa, twenty
five years ago; joined Company L in 1892, and was the fourth man to
join the company. He was well liked, a fine officer, and gave up his
life in the Second Division Hospital, September 6, 1898--another
victim to typhoid fever."
