Miscellaneous Clayton co. Physicians
Dr. Sidney Corbin Ainsworth Born in January 1877 in New York state. In 1899, he graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at St. Louis, MO. First practicing with his father E.A. Ainsworth in West Union, Iowa, he removed to Volga City in 1901, practicing at that place until his death in 1930. Dr. Ray Grant took over Dr. Ainsworth's practice. |

Dr. Frederick Andros ....Another Dubuque physician, Dr. Frederick Andros, graduated from the Parsons Medical School of Brown University in 1826. Born in Berkeley, Massachusetts, in 1804, Dr. Andros gave up his five-year-old practice in Dubuque in 1838 and moved to Clayton County to engage in agriculture. He acted as the first clerk of the court in Clayton County. He resumed the practice of medicine in 1845, serving as surgeon at Fort Atkinson and also as physician to the Winnebago Indian Agency. ~source:

Dr. Sylvanus Newell Bixby

Born May 16, 1844 to the
Rev. N.W. and Ruby (Knapp) Bixby. Brother of Ransom J.,
Luthera B. and Lucina R. Bixby. He attended Rush Medical
College in Chicago, Illinois and at Keokuk, Iowa.

Dr. Frederick Elmer Braucht 1868-1948. He was born in Illinois, but grew up in Nebraska. Studied medicine at the University of Michigan and Rush Medical College in Chicago, graduating in 1894. Dr. Braucht also had the degree of Master of Dental Science. Served in WWI at 127th Base Hospital. Removed to Elkader in 1925. ~sources: obituary & biography |

Dwight W. Chase, M.D.

Dr. Dwight "D.W."
Chase, physician and surgeon, was born abt. 1820 in the
state of New York. He served as a surgeon with the 21st
Iowa Infantry during the Civil War. He was the first
physician in Strawberry Point, practicing medicine there
between 1855 and 1864, perhaps longer. By 1873 he was
practicing in Elkader. Dr. Chase was a Master Mason,
lodge # 130 in Strawberry Point in 1864. Buried at Dephos

Henry H. Clark, M.D.

Born October 12, 1842. He
served in the Civil War with the 92nd Illinois Mounted
Infantry. Graduated from the Chicago Medical College in
1869 and located in McGregor in 1870. At the time of his
death, January 18, 1925, he was the oldest practicing
physician in the state of Iowa. Biography

Craig
|
Born October 5, 1850, the
son of Rev. Adam Craig and Mary E. Craig. Graduated from
Ruch Medical College in Chicago, Illinois in 1875. Opened
a medical office in Volga City in 1881, where he
practiced for 23 years.

Dr. Grant located in Volga
City following the death of Dr. Ainsworth in 1930. He was
a graduate of the University of Minnesota. He retired in

Dr. Placido R.V. Hommel Born in Porto Rico, he left there for America with Spanish-American troops commanded by Capt. J.W. Hommell in 1898. He attended medical school at the University of Illinois, graduating in 1916. He entered the U.S. Army in 1917, as a commissioned Lieutenant, he served with the 32nd WI Nat'l guard in France, being discharged as a Captain. Removing to Elkader he practiced with Dr. W.A. Miller and later with Dr. Edward Meggers over a period of more than 50 years. He died in Elkader in 1967. |

Dr. Joseph W. Hudek Garnavillo physician, practicing there for 61 years. Dr. Hudek graduated from Iowa Medical School at Keokuk in 1905. His first practice was at Spillville. After one year there, he removed to Garnavillo and took over the practice of Dr. Schmidt. Dr. Hudek retired in 1966 and died later that year. |

Dr. Enoch G. Kettelkamp He was born in Illinois in 1893 and graduated from the University of Kansas as a medical doctor in 1928. In 1931 he moved to Monona where he practiced until 1981. Dr Kettlekamp served in World War I. |

Dr. Frank Joseph Kriebs Graduated from Rush Medical College in Chicago. Was an Elkport - Garber vicinity physician for 7 decades. |

Dr. John Linton John Linton of Kentucky managed the Winnebago Mission for the Reverend David Lowry from 1837 to 1842. Returning to Kentucky he studied medicine for two years in Springfield. Dr. Samuel Little Born in New Hampshire, 5/22/1801, he studied medicine at Dartmouth College. Removed to Clayton co. in 1855 and located near Farmersburg. He was married to Catherine; and they had a son John and daughter Arabel. He died several days following a carriage accident in March 1878. Sept. 1855 Clayton County Herald, in a column by the editor, A.W. Drips "On Monday morning got into Dr. Andros' buggy and rode with him to Mr. Fisher's in Farmersburg. Expected to find Mr. F. at home; found he was gone .... got acquainted with Dr. Little and family; took dinner with them ..." Dr. Little did not practice medicine after he moved to Clayton county. |

Dr. Edward C. Meggers Born at Walker, Linn co IA, he graduated from the medical department of the University of Illinois. He served as an intern at Augustana hospital, Chicago for about six months and then entered the medical corps of the United States Navy in April 1917. He was later attached to the 5th and 6th Marine corps and went to France in June 1918 remaining in France until August 1919. Dr. Meggers was detailed by the navy to hospital service in the Virgin Islands and remained there nearly two years, then returning to this country, was attached to the U.S. Marine hospital in Chicago about a year. In May 1922 he joined the staff of the new sanitarium at Prairie du Chien, WI and was chief operating surgeon for that institution until purchasing the practice of Dr. Miller & joining Dr. P.R.V. Hommel in a co-partnership at Elkader in 1923. In 1924 he removed to McGregor where he & his wife operated the McGregor Hospital for 25 years. He died at Palo Alto, CA in 1952 and is buried in Golden Gate Nat'l Cemetery, CA. ~biographical info. is from the Elkader Register, July 12, 1923; pg 6 & his obituary. |

Dr. William J. McGrath Dr. McGrath was born in Wisconsin in 1871. He graduated from Rush Medical College in Chicago in 1895 and came to Elkader shortly after. His practice lasted more than 50 years. He died in Elkader in 1946 and is buried in St. Joseph's cemetery. |

Dr. William Aaron Miller He was born in Mallory township in August 1870. Studied at Lenox College and graduated from the State Teacher's College. Graduated from the medical school at the State University of Iowa and took a post-graduate couse at the Wisconsin College of Physicians & Surgeons in Milwaukee. Practiced in Elkader with Dr. P.R.V. Hommel from 1897 until 1923, when he retired. |

Dr. Clark Holden
Rawson

Dr. Rawson was born in New
York in 1818. He studied medicine under his
brother-in-law and attended medical school in Vermont. He
removed to Clayton co. in 1857 & was married to
Caroline A. Brownell in 1858. He died in 1901 and is

Dr. Edward Clark
Rawson

Born 1866 in Strawberry
Point, Dr. Rawson's father (C.H. Rawson) was one of the
pioneer physicians in Iowa. He graduated from
Northwestern University Medical College in 1891, and
began practicing in Strawberry Point the next year. Dr.
Rawson married Gertrude Gilchrist in 1892 and they had
two children. He died of carbon monoxide poisioning on
November 27, 1927. He is buried in the Strawberry Point
cemetery.

Dr. George Washington Tapper Born in Monona, he practiced medicine in his hometown for over 37 years. He graduated from the State University of Iowa Medical School in 1896. His first practices were in Ashton and Rowley, IA before returning to Monona in 1913. |

Dr. Amos Warner He was born in Vermont, and graduated from Willoughby Medical College in 1840. In 1844 he married Esther (Carter) Griswold who was the widow of a friend. They came to Clayton county in 1848, locating in Elkader. In 1859 he was one of the organizers of the Clayton county Medical Society, and presided over the organizational meeting. After adoption of the Constitution, he was elected Vice President of the society. He died at age 51 on 9/16/1861 after being thrown from his buggy. He is buried in the East Side cemetery, Elkader. Two years later Esther removed to Nebraska. |

Dr. Glenn Granger White He was born in National in 1866. Practiced in Elkader for over 40 years, first opening an office there in 1892, His medical studies are recounted in a 1894 biography & his obituary. He removed to California and died at Los Angeles, CA on Nov. 17, 1943. |
