Alvin Henry Thiese, of Elkader, was one of three Jehovah's Witnesses who were sentenced in Federal Court in Dubuque to three years in a federal institution for failure to report to draft boards under the Selective Service act. Thiese claimed to have been an ordained minister in Jehovah's Witnesses since Oct., 1941, and said that he conscientionsly placed his loyalty to his religion ahead of his loyalty to his country. Thiese and the others had also refused to enter a conscientious objectors' camp.

Robert Thyne of near Elkader was sentenced to five days in jail on charges of drunkeness by Justice Ray Barton.

Pvt. J. W. Breitsprecher of near Monona, who failed to return to his camp last Dec. 10 at the expiration of his leave, was returned to military authorities at Fort Des Moines Friday by Sheriff E. W. Carlsen. Private Breitsprecher was charged with desertion from Camp Robinson, Ark. He was picked up by the Sheriff Thursday.

Del Meyer of Guttenberg was sentenced to 30 days in jail by Justice George Ehrhardt. Fifteen days of the jail sentence was suspended.

Alex Yaeger of Strawberry Point pleaded guilty to operating a motor vehicle without a license and was sentenced to 30 days in jail. Another charge, operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, is pending reports of results of scientific tests, County Attorney H. K. Roggensack said. [Note: See June 10th entry below.]

O.?. Masters of McGregor was arrested and brought before Justice Ray Barton on a charge of assault and battery. He was given a sentence of 30 days in the county jail. The sentence was suspended on the condition that he leave the state.

W. H. Blake of Clayton was arrested for petty larceny Monday and brought before Mayor Frank Laarveld of Clayton and given a 30-day jail sentence which was suspended on payment of costs. Blake was paroled to the Sheriff.

Peter Larson was arrested on a charge of drunkenness last Thursday and brought before Justice Ray Barton, Tuesday. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail which was suspended on payment of costs.

Alex Jaeger of Guttenberg, who had been serving a 30-day sentence in the county jail for driving without a license, has been given an additional 15 days for reckless driving, according to County Attorney H. K. Roggensack. [Note: See May 13th above]

Lorenz Handke, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oswald Handke of Ceres, was sentenced to five years in the state reformatory at Anamosa, and James Noake, 21, son of Mrs. Josie Noack of Dundee, received a year in the county jail as the result of the theft of $3500 from the Clarence Kann farm home near Guttenberg. The two plead guilty before Judge W. L. Eichendorf. Noack is a former rural school teacher and both men, who are both single, were employed at the Kann farm this summer.

Jay Dunn of Elkader pleaded guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and was fined $300 by Judge W. L. Eichendorf.

Charles Carroll of McGregor was sentenced by Justice George Ehrhardt last Thursday to 30 days in the county jail for driving while his license was under suspension.

Raymond Butters of Holy Cross, who was arrested by Sheriff E. W. (Dick) Carlsen, was sentenced to 15 days in the county jail by Justice George Ehrhardt Saturday. Butters was charged with petty larceny involving some potatoes taken from the Joe Fischer farm in Millville township where he was employed. [Note: See July 15th entry below.]

Gregor Kann of Guttenberg was fined $300 and costs by Judge W. L. Eichendorf in district court here Tuesday after pleading guilty to charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Kann's driver's license was suspended for 60 days.

Art Herman of Guttenberg was sentenced to 30 days in the county jail and fined $10 by Justice Ray Barton Monday on charges of being intoxicated.

Raymond Butters, of Holy Cross, who had been serving time in the county jail for petty larceny, was brought before Judge Eichendorf on another charge of larceny. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years at the State reformatory at Anamosa. The sentence was suspended during good behavior and Butters was paroled to the Iowa Board of Parole.

Two Guttenberg taverns were raided Saturday night. A quantity of liquor was seized at each place and the defendants, Mrs. Lillian Bruckner and Elmer Harbaugh, appeared before Judge W. L. Eichendorf Monday and pleaded guilty. Each was fined $300 and costs.

Charles and Albert Barker, Marquette, plead guilty to a charge of resisting an officer before Judge Eichendorf who sentenced each to one year in the county jail, and suspended a portion of each sentence during good behavior. The men had been arrested Aug. 2 by the Sheriff and a deputy after a disturbance in Marquette in which City Marshall McGill was assaulted.

Harlan E. Martin was arrested Friday after overturning his car at the Shell Station on the East Side. He was brought before Justice George Ehrhardt on charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He pleaded guilty Monday and was fined $300 and costs.

Leo Opitz was charged with driving a car without a license and was fined $5 and costs. Calvin Martin was charged with intoxication and was sentenced to 10 days in the county jail.

Leo Amling was arrested in Garber Tuesday, charged with assault and battery, and brought before Justice George Ehrhardt, who fined Amling $25 and costs.

Merrill Rankin of Strawberry Point, who was arrested last week for larceny of an automobile wheel from Clarence Maggert, was brought before Justice Ray Barton and sentenced to 30 days in jail, which was suspended upon payment of the wheel and costs.

Charles Crane of near Elkader was forced to surrender his gasoline ration coupons to the local ration board. He was arrested in Strawberry Point for speeding and reckless driving and fined in mayor's court.

Russell Brown, 26, of Dubuque, was sentenced to five years in the state reformatory at Anamosa. The sentence was suspended and Brown was paroled to the state board of parole. Brown was charged with larceny by embezzlement of mortgaged property.

Henry Huckins appeared before Justice George Ehrhardt on charges of petty larceny and was given 15 days in the county jail. Nelton McCarty, a parolee from the state penitentiary involved with the same theft, was turned over to the state parole board.

Robert Livingston and Leland Mueller were fined $10 and costs by Justice George Ehrhardt after being arrested for hunting ducks after sunset. Federal Ranger Harley Lawrence made the arrest at Turkey River.

William Roethler pleaded guilty in district court to charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and was fined $300 and sentenced to three months in jail. Also, John Erickson was fined $10 and costs on a charge of drunkenness. The two men were arrested when the car in which they were riding tipped over north of town.

Gilman Randall of Guttenberg was arrested on charges of illegal taking of fish in the Mississippi by Game Warden George Kauffman of Lansing. He was brought before Justice Ray Barton and fined $50 and costs.

Robert Sabbann, 18, of Monona, was fined $25 and costs on a charge of assault and battery by Justice George Ehrhardt, Monday.

Anthony J. Daly, a Chicago salesman, was arrested near Monona on charges of reckless driving and was fined $50 and costs by Justice George Ehrhardt.

William Crane of near Elkader was fined $50 and costs by justice Ray Barton Monday on charges of drunkeness and Assault. The fine is to be paid by Jan. 1, 1944.

Cecil Davis, 20, Strawberry Point, pleaded guilty before Judge T. H. Goheen to a charge of larceny. Sentence was fixed at one year in the county jail. Davis had entered the Shroeder tavern and pool hall the night of Oct. 05, and had taken $39 from the cash register.
