"I have no idea how old this photograph is. My mother, Charlotte Marie Amling O'Brien, was born in 1911 on the hill above Elkport, Iowa. As far as I know she always went to Saint Michael's Catholic Church in Garber aka East Elkport. This would have meant a walk down the hill to Elkport, past the school, across town, over the bridge and into Garber and to Saint Michael's. The Elkport Catholic Church must have been gone by her time. Elkport in the old days was a terrible flood area from the Turkey River."

From the History of Clayton County, Iowa, 1882:

The present house of worship was erected in 1874. It is forty by fifty-six feet, of stone, and cost $4,000. A neat and commodious parsonage is attached, which cost $2,000. There is a Sunday-school connected with the church, and it meets on alternate Sundays. About fifty families are now connected with the church
