Nathan Scofield, merchant, Strawberry Point, is a native of Essex County, N. Y., born Nov. 6, 1827, and was a son of Harvey and Elizabeth Scofield. He received a practical business education in his native State, and when eighteen years of age learned the carpenter and joiner's trade, which he followed a number of years. He came to Clayton County in 1855, worked at his trade eighteen years, then embarked in the mercantile business in Edgewood, removing his stock to Strawberry Point in 1879. He was married Dec. 29, 1858, to Harriet Noble, who was born in Cattaraugus County, N. Y. Of three children born to this union two are living-- Neola and Fred. Mr. Scofield was one of the charter members of the Masonic lodge at Strawberry Point, and is the present W. M. of that order. He is also a member of the A. O. U. W. lodge, of which he was representative to the Grand lodge. He is a Universalist in his religious views, and is one of the representative business men of this place.
