Robert
Killen
Monona Twp.
Robert Killen, one of the prominent farmers of the
county, was born in Tyrone County, Ireland, July 20,
1816. In 1845 he emigrated to Canada, spending two years
in Montreal, and in 1847 came to Clayton County and
located in Garnavillo Township. He made a claim there,
but not being satisfied with it, relinquished it and
located on the land he now owns. On Oct 25, 1849, he
married Margaret Conolly, who was born in Ireland, Jan.
1, 1820. Of six children born of this union, five are
living John, Martha J., George H., Alexander G.,
and Mary L., wife of George Gilbert, of Monona. Mr.
Killen came to Clayton County in limited circumstances,
having for capital a strong arm and determination to
succeed. By industry and fair dealing he has accumulated
a fine property, and has won for himself a good name in
the home of his adoption. Himself and wife are members of
the Methodist Episcopal church at Monona.
