John S. Graybill, a prominent
citizen of Millville Township, was born in Millville
Township, Clayton County, on June 30, 1848, and was the
youngest of a family of nine children. He was married
March 15, 1870, to Anna Smith, who was born in this
township July 22, 1844. Five children have blessed this
union, viz.: Charles, born Oct. 2, 1872; Ella, Nov. 31,
1874; Hattie, July 13, 1877; Martin, Dec. 8, 1879, and
Orren, March 20, 1882. Mr. Graybill's mother, Amelia
Graybill, was born in Union County, Pa., Dec. 4, 1808,
and came to Iowa in 1841, settling first at Guttenberg,
which at that time contained only three cabins. She
afterward removed to section 23, Millville Township,
where she is at present residing. When she came to the
county it was yet in its infancy, being inhabited chiefly
by the Indians. She says that as many as ten Indians have
slept in her cabin in one night, they sleeping on the
floor while the family occupied the beds. Mr. Graybill is
now President of the School Board, and has held the
offices of School Director, Road Supervisor and others.
He gives the Republican party his support. source: History of Clayton
