Lowell R. Gilbert (deceased) was
born in Putney, Windom County, Vt. He came with his
family to this county and settled in Read Township, where
he remained until the fall of 1867, when he removed to
Giard Township, which was his home at the time of his
death. He was a thrifty, well-to-do farmer, a prominent
and respected citizen, and filled some important official
positions creditably to himself and to the entire
satisfaction of his constituents. In the fall of 1869 he
was nominated and made a very creditable canvas for the
office of Representative in the Legislature. Mr. Gilbert
had ten children living, nine of whom were present at the
funeral, which took place at his late residence, Rev.
Moses Polley officiating. His death was a sad affliction,
which falls heavily upon his family, consisting of a
loving wife and ten children, who survive him. source: History of Clayton
