In 1883 Patrick Moyna and his sister Margaret immigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where their sister Ann, the wife of Patrick Finley resided. Both found work in the area, Patrick in a brickyard and Margaret in a boarding house.
A year later Patrick moved to Cox Creek, Clayton County, Iowa, where he worked as a farm laborer until he purchased a farm from Nancy McPhillips Farmer, the widow of James Farmer.
Three years later, in 1887, he was joined by his brother Owen Moyna who had qualified as a teacher in Monaghan County, Ireland. Owen decided the Midwest would give him more opportunities then remaining in Ireland. He too purchased land in Clayton County.
Patrick married Katie Lane, the daughter of John and Mary Conway Lane, who also lived in the Cox Creek area. They had one son John Michael, aka Michael John, who was named after his uncle the Rev. Michael Moyna, a Dean in the Catholic Church in Toronto, Canada. After Katie died, Patrick married Mary Ivory, a local teacher.
Owen married Veronica Conboy and they had one daughter Rose. Veronica died in 1894 and Owen married her sister Katherine Conboy. They had three sons, Michael, Francis and James. Owen died young of typhoid fever in Littleport, Iowa, in 1899. Katherine then married the widower John Rohn and together with their children, they moved first to South Dakota. Later Katherine and her father Michael Conboy lived in Michigan.
John Michael Moyna, son of Patrick, was a farmer, county maintenance foreman, government employment officer for the Lock and Dam in Guttenberg, and grading contractor. He married Elsie Alderson, daughter of John and Susannah Carpenter Alderson. They were the parents of three children, Mae, Cecil, and Edward. After Elsie died, John married her sister Jessie Alderson. They were the parents of one daughter, Mary Evelyn. Mary Evelyn married James Stewart (1924-2009), son of Guy and Bernice (Aarvig) Stewart.
