Kirchner-French Memorial Library History
GIVES FARM FOR PETERSON LIBRARY
Mrs. Lena French of Peterson who passed away at her home in Peterson recently, left her valuable farm to the town for the establishment of a library. Mrs. French's will provides that her farm north of Peterson, consisting of two hundred acres, is to be sold within five years following her death. A library building is to be erected on a suitable lot in the town of Peterson, furnished and books are to be purchases. The surplus from the sale of the land is to be invested in first mortgage bonds on Iowa land the income used as endowment for the library. If this amount is insufficient the town of Peterson must undertake to levy a tax great enough to make up the deficit. There are no other conditions whatever attached to the gift, which is to be known as the Kirchner-French Memorial. The executors of the will, who are charged with the carrying out of all the arrangements necessary to the planning for and building of the Memorial Library are: Mrs. R.E. Heywood, A.O. Anderson and J.E. Allison. Source: Spencer News Herald, Spencer, Clay County, Iowa; May 21, 1925. Note: Obituary page for obituary of Lena Kirchner French.
