December 13, 1894

Mrs. Page was buried at the Ottawa cemetery last Friday. Rev. Church preached the funeral at Ottawa...Mrs. Campbell and daughter of Smyrna, were visiting at Mrs. Wing's last Wednesday...Henry Garris and family spent a part of last week at Humeston, visitng with her parents, Ira Boyd and wife...Mrs. Carpenter met with quite an accident last week. She was carrying a bucket of water and slipped and fell on the bucket and hert her side and breast qite badly...Miss Anna O'Neal is reported quite sick..

December 20, 1894

Harry Wiard met with quite an accident on Monday morning. He was riding a horse to water when it slipped and fell on him, smashing his foot and ankle...Mr. Chittenden and wife, of Osceola, came down on No. 4 Saturday to visit Mrs. Chittenden's parents. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Reusch, from Chariton are visitng relative in Woodburn. They will stay until Christmas.

Rachel McGeo and Hattie Harken spent Sunday with friends at Hebron...Sada Humiston returned from Weldon Wednesday...Jacob Crowley is down town again after a two weeks' illness...M. O. Shockley, of Ottumwa, is here visitng old friends this week...Mrs. Benj. Coppock was called to Keokuk Saturday to see her daughter Anna who is very sick...Cordie Brattan is in the country visiting her uncle a few days...Callie Stot's health is improving; she goes up town quite often now...

Wing has gone to Shannon City to preach the funeral of Mr. Campbell...Mrs. Curtis has moved on the John Lewis place and Ole Barber will move in her house...Miss Ida Duke will start to Jefferson county Friday to visit with her brother Orin for a few months...George Mosbarger has bought the property where George Leach lived...Will Carson and Mary Wylie were married Wednesday night at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. Wylie. They will move on the father's farm south of town...

Twyford March 3rd, a daughter...Quincy Hooker is home from Indianola to spend his vacation...Mr. and Mrs. Wood Coppock returned to their home in Salina, Kansas, after a two weeks' visit with relatives here...Minnie Reeves was here Tuesday looking after her music class...E. R. Gardner has moved into the house recently vacated by Jas. Humiston...Mrs. Will Clark gave a dinner to her lady friends last Wednesday...Mrs. Ernest Burns, of Osceola, is visiting her sister Mrs. C. A. Twyford...Dr. Armstrong of Osceola, was on the streets of Woodburn Tuesday...Anna Coppock is slowly improving in health.

Hastings is visiting with her sister at Moberly, Missouri...School opens Monday with Mr. Kendall principal, and Miss Hattie Harkin primary teacher...Lafe Hood shipped two car loads of hogs, the best he has shipped this year, also one car load of butcher stock...R.E. Gardner, of Des Moines, is here looking aftre his interest in his farm...G. W. Stotts and Walt Harkens went to Griswold the first of the week to look up a location for a location for a store... Patience Blythe and Birdie Felger spent the first of the week with their uncle, Ben Felger, near Osceola...Miss Grace Blythe left Tuesday morning for Glenwood, Iowa, where she will spend the summer with her sister...Jas. Blythe, of Aurora, Illinois, was the guest of his cousin, Dr. Blythe, last Sunday...E. E. Cline will soon move his family to East Woodburn into the property he purchased of W. A. Clark...Larry Vanscoy was seen on our streets Tuesday with a pair of trained rats in harness...Ralph Swan secured Jim Fowler's team and buggy Monday morning to drive to Jay with a traveling man. The horses became frightened and tore up the buggy in general...Jas. Stewart and family drove to southern Missouri last week where they will make their future home...B. Swisher left the first of the week for West Virginia...Elmer Duke has moved to Missouri. His wife will join him in a few days...Jas. Humison has returned from Cedar Rapids where he attended the funeral of his daughter, Mrs. George Zellar. .

Alvin Felger of Illinois, is visiting the family of J. R. Felger... House cleaning time is here again. Winnie Harrold, our paper hanger is quite busy and wears more smiles than usual. Why is it? Why, a new baby has come to hs house to stay...Mrs. J. A. Crowley was very pleasantly s7urprised, Thursday, by her neighbors and friends gathering in and partaking of a very bountiful dinner, it being her birthday...

Mrs. Tabler has moved her family to East Woodburn...The public school grounds, of Woodburn, have been greatly improved by a grove of more than a hundred of trees being planted, which will be a comfort to the school children before many years...We are glad Mr. Stotts and family will remain with us...Geo. Baker and wife, after spending the winter in Pennsylvania, hve returned to Woodburn...Married at the residence of the bride's parents, Wednesday evening, at 7:30 by Rev. Wing, Miss Maude O'Neall and Henry Coppock, both of Woodburn...Mrs. Warren McComas from near Osceola, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Critchfield...Miss Birdie Felger and Anna Martin spent Easter with friends in Chariton...Grandma McLain has returned from Illinois where she has been visiting for some time...J. J. Nicol, of North English, visited relatives here for a short time this week.

Clarke...The "White Spear Medicine Co." will be with us next week...Oscar Folger, of Afton, spent Sunday evening in town...Mrs. R. E. Gardner, of Des Moines, is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Ury, east of town...Mrs. Wm. Penick entertained Mrs. James Revees, of Osceola, last week...Mr. Bert, of Chariton spent a couple of days of this week in Woodburn on business... Roy Anderson, of Osceola, was seen on our streets Tuesday.

Miss Minnie Main, of Chariton, is visiting Miss Callie Stotts...Miss Hattie Harkens has returned from Jefferson county...George Cochran, who resided east of town, died Friday evening and was brought to this place Sunday morning for burial. Rev. D. B. Long conducted the funeral services, which was attended by a large concourse of friends and relatives...Early Crowly, of Des Moines, is visiting his grandparents of this place...Mary, daughter of James Terhune, came home from Chicago Monday. She is very low with the consumption...Rev. Wing and wife were called to Lucas Sunday to attend a funeral...Sadie Humiston has accepted a position in Mose Goldsmith's store at Murray. She left for that place last week...Mrs. Ed. Hastings spent Saturday in Creston...Mr. and Mrs. Chittenden, of Osceola, spent Sunday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Foster...Gurney Hood is breaking on the C.B. & Q. R.R. from Creston to Ottumwa...Mrs. R. E. Gardner and daughter, Cora, have gone to Charton to visit Mrs. McMain...

Miss Bertha Hood returned Monday evening after a two month's visit at Glidden, Iowa...Mrs. George Leach and children, of Cromwell, are visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Coppock...Oscar Felger spent Sunday at home...Mr. Arthur Kerr, who has been visiting his cousin's the Misses Pattersons, returned home Wednesday...Mr. Crowley made a trip...

The weather has been quite cool the past week; heavy frosts and also freezing several nights...Rev. Wing preached at the M. E. church Sunday night. They will move to Cromwell, Iowa. for a year or two to recruit his health. He will not take a circuit until his health is better...Mrs. Patterson returned home Friday night from a visit in the northern part of the state...Mr. Hemphill, of Mediapolis, this state, is here trying to organize a musical convention. We hope he will succeed...Ike Martin and wife, of Osceola were Woodburn visitors Sunday. ..Mrs. Twyford entertained quite a number of friends to dinner Tuesday.

Mrs. Fagot, of Lexington, Nebraska, is here visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ledrow, and sisters, Mrs. Page and Mrs. Patterson...Mr. Ben Felger and family spent Sunday in Woodburn the guests of J. R. Felger...Miss Tallman, of Weldon, was the guest of Miss Birdie Felger Sunday...Miss Ola Patterson is spending a few days with friends in Chariton this week...Miss Allie Holmes of Chariton is visiting Mrs. Stotts a few days this week...Lair Vanscoy's team ran away with him one day last week, scattering wood along the way and breaking the wagon pretty bad...Miss Daisy Waugh, east of town, is quite sick, also Mrs. Hattie Garris, south of town, has been very low the past week but we hear she is better at present. They sent a telegram for her sister, Della Martin who has been attending school in Creston. She came on No. 4 the same day. ..There was a wedding east of Woodburn this week, Miss Stella Critchfield and Mr. Dasher, of Humiston. They went to Osceola Friday and were married returning the same evening. Mr. Dasher went back to Humiston Saturday morning to finish teaching his school in that place. ..Mr. McNerny, the artist, surprised us all one day last week by picking up his traps and getting out. He evidently did not like Woodburn as he left a good deal of work he could have done. A good artist will do well here. ..Mr. Jim Hill and family left between two days last week, leaving quite a rent roll not paid and other debts also. We understand they went to Missouri of course...Mrs. J. R. Felger has been quite sick, also Mrs. Wm. Johnson...The ladies of the mite society served dinner and supper in the old bank building election day. They did well. Proceeds about $15.00...Election passed off very quietly with a Republican majority for both state and township officers. ..The sparks from the cars set fire to the grass near Henry Garris' house and they had to fight fire lively to keep from being burned out...Miss Ida Duke is kept closely at home nursing a sprained ankle, caused by the saddle turning while out riding...J. O. Twan is very low with typhoid fever...Miss Etta DeWater, of Nevada, visited last week with Mrs. Martin and other friends here...

December 19, 1895

We are having beautiful weather for December and the farmers are taking advantage of nice weather and good roads and hauling their corn to market. The hay balers must be busy also, judigng from the amount of hay being hauled into the market. The roads are lined with teams...Coppock & Penick, our grain dealers, are dong a good business. Mr. Humiston is also doing a good business shipping poultry...Mr. Riley Adam's of Brush, were Woodburn visitors Sunday, the guests of Jessie Dukes...Mr. Joshua Atwater is back to Woodburn again. He has hired Lortez Martin back to his old place as assistant again...Charley Lewallen has traded farms with his brother, Doc, for the coming year. Doc will live on his father's farm north of town. Charley will move on the Crosby place five miles southeast of town...Rev. Hays preached both morning and evening at the Christian church last Sunday...Miss Libbie Nix was down from Afton visiting Birdie Folger last week...Mr. and Mrs. Ira Boyd, of Humeston, were visiting in Woodburn Monday...Dr. Swisher reports: Born to Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Perdue, December 7th, a son: to Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Moorhouse, December 14th, a girl.
