Hurrah for Cupid! Lots of wedding cards lately. first--cards are out announcing the wedding of Miss Kathrine Wilson to Emanuel Hindes, February 6th, at Concord, Ohio. They will make their future home in Murray. Secondly -Miss Alice Addis, a former Murray girl, married Mr. Marshall, of Great Bend, Kansas, last week. Her many friends offer their congratulations. Thirdly - Mr. Frank Lucy came from Osceola last Friday, accompanied by his better half. They were married in Osceola Thursday. Mr. Lucy went at once to his farm south of town where they will go to housekeeping... Doctor Carver has a broad smile on his face these days--the reason is a little visitor came to his house on the 24th inst. She will probably make an extended visit...Mr. W. J. Talley, brother-in-law of Mrs. C. H. Folkner, died of heart disease at his home in Peoria, Illinois, age fifty-one years. He leaves a wife and two daughters. He was a former resident of Hopeville and Murray...Mr. H.M. Ryan died Tuesday morning after a lingering illness of about two years. He was about seventy years of age, he leaves a wife and eight children. The funeral takes place at the house Thursday...Miss Lizzie Adkins visited Maud Eden Tuesday.

Mr. Earnest Kendall visited his cousin, Miss Mary Kendall, and attended our teacher's meeting Saturday...John Ross and wife and Geo. Forbes and wife attended church Sunday at the M.E. church. The farewell sermons in the old church were preached Sunday...Tom Johnson spent Sunday in Murray...The Epworth League will give a geographical social Wednesday eve at Mr. Geo. Christy's; lunch 10 cents. Rev. Chas. Chambers and wife, of Newton, visited the families of J. W. Bruffey, Jamison Clark and Amos Chambers...Miss Mattie Kendall spent Saturday and Sunday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam'l Kendall...Rev. Zink, the M.P. minister of Osceola, spent a few days with friends in Murray the past week...The new church will be dedicated Sunday by Rev. Wickersham, of Atlantic, Iowa... W. G. Evans sold his farm to James B. Franklin, of Odessa, Missouri, for $7,000.

February 14, 1895

The new M.E. church was dedicated Sunday by Rev. Wickersham, of Atlantic, Iowa. Over sixteen hundred dollars was raised in forty-five minutes. This was the twenty-second church Rev. Wickersham had been called on to dedicate, and he said it was wonderful that so much money was raised in so short a time...Born to Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Evans, Saturday, a little daughter...Miss Sadie Bott, of Seymour, Iowa, is visitng her sister, Mrs. Anna White...Little Frankie Bishop and Lena Marks are on the sick list...Miss Fannie Lambertson returned from Afton last week where she has been attending college...Mr. Chaney departed this life Sunday morning after a protracted illness of two years. Mr. Chaney was an octogenarian and a member of the Baptist church. He leaves a wife and three children to mourn the loss of a kind husband and father. The funeral was preached Sunday at the Baptist church by Rev. Robinson...About seventeen of Miss Emma Hallam's young friends completely surprised her on Friday evening, reminding her that she was a miss of fifteen that day...Miss Maud Downs' young friends very pleasantly surprised her on Thursday evening in honor of her fourteenth birthday. ..

Mr. F. S. Hice, the west side pharmacist, was called home, Saturday, by the serious illness of his stepmother at Delaware, Iowa...Some time ago we mentioned the fact of Mr. E. M. Hindes leaving for Concord, Ohio. Last Friday, he returned--but not alone. Mr. and Mrs. Hindes have the congratulations of Murray people and best wishes for a long and happy life...Mr. Tom Beede visited friends at Kellerton last week...

Mr. Jed Knotts, of Beatrice, Nebraska, is shaking hand with old friends and looking after his financial interests...Miss Mattie Kendall closed her school at Hopeville Friday with literary exercises...Mr. John Carter left for Illinois Tuesday where they will make thier future home...Mrs. Emanuel Hindes has been quite sick with tonsolitis the past week...Mr. and Mrs. Lem Boll are the happy parents of a little daughter...Married at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Stiffler's, Miss Bell McGrew to Mr. Gale Hines. ...Mr. Jesse Emery died at the home of his son in Nebraska, February 20, 1895. His remains was brought to Murray Thursday night. His funeral was preached Friday at the Christian church after which his body was laid to rest in the Hopeville cemetery. Dr. Emery was a former citizen of Clarke county. He was a member of the Christian church...Myrtle Service is on the sick list...Mr. Ward's moved to Dave Briley's farm Tuesday...Lulu Fivecoat closed a very successful term of school at the Taylor school house Friday...

Robinson closed a series of meetings at the Baptist church with fourteen additions to their church...Born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Claver Thursday, a little son...Mr. Edd Corfe after clerking six months in Dr. Grigg's drug store, returned to his home near Marshalltown, Monday...Mr. Charley Cardiff's moved from their farm to town. They are living with Mrs. C's mother, Mrs. J. U. Jones...Mr. Oliver Cooper's will move to Pocohontas Co. this week...Mr. Winans and family moved from Illinois, last week...Mr. Willis and family move to Mills county this week...Mr. George Headley's will move to Madison county this week...Dr. F. W. Sells, of Des Moines spent Sunday at home...Mrs. Folkner was ill a few days last week...Mrs. Ryan and family moved to Afton, last week...Miss Edith Howard closed her school, Friday and returned to her home in Osceola, Saturday.

Many of the young folks enjoyed a masquerade party last Tuesday night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Daniel's...Prof. D. L. Newkirk was on the sick list Monday, was unable to teach Monday afternoon...Messrs. G. W. Vincent and H. V. Bell transacted business in Osceola Saturday...Nellie Lambertson, of the Afton college, visited her parents Saturday and Sunday...Frank Bott is on the sick list...Mr. Shumark, of Illinois, is visitng his relatives, the family of Benj. Briley... Quite a number of the young ladies attended a reception for Miss Emma Krenger, of Des Moines, given by Miss Mattie Howig Monday evening...Miss Lillian Sells' seventh birthday was celebrated Saturday by about fourty of her little lady friends. All enjoyed the romps of springtime...Mr. Franklin and family moved from Missouri last week to the Evans farm...Charley Morgan was in Hopeville Monday...Mrs. White and daughter Lulu returned from Seymor, Iowa, where she had been taking care of her sick mother...The sewing society meets at Mrs. Hoffman's Wednesday.

Miss Richards held examination in the high school room Tuesday and Wednesday...Miss Mattie Kendall begins a three month's term of school in the John Aller district Monday...Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Chittenden drove down from Osceola, Sunday...Mr. Robert Oberman, died Sunday night after a weeks' illness. Mr. Oberman was forty-one years old and has had resided near Murray for nineteen years. Mr. Oberman was an honored and respected citizen, a consistent member of the Christian church. He leaves a wife, one son and one daughter. His funeral sermon was preached Tuesday by Rev. J. K. Cornell. The bereaved friends have the sympathy of numerous friends...Carl Lochrie and Walter Adams were in Osceola, Saturday...Miss Jennie McWilliams, of Osceola is assisting Mrs. S. A. Clark in her milliner shop...Misses Mae Cropp, Effie Toby, Mattie Kendall and Eva Sells attended the teacher's convention at Osceola, Saturday. Miss Eva gave a recitation entitled The Two Cousins, which was very entertaining to the audience as Miss Eva is gifted with the power to impersonate and gracefulness..Misses Maud Cathels and Mattie Howig left Friday for Palmyra where they are engaged to teach...Rev. R. W. Matheny went to Chariton, Friday...Mr. W. G. Evans is building a new house and barn in the north-west part of town...News comes from Hopeville this morning of the death of J. E. Jackson, one of Hopeville's best citizens. Mr. Jackson has been a resident of Clarke county for several years...Mr. D. A. Clarke is receiving a visit from his nephew from Ohio...

Evans' and S. A. Andrews' new houses are rapidly nearing completion and fresh paint improves the appearance of B. F. Stockwell's and Wm. Martindale's residences...A. H. Sells is in Des Moines this week on business..Mr. Samuel Tobey returned to Indiana last week. He is working in a creamery and will spend the summer there...Jessie Smith is spending the summer with her aunt in Eau claire, Wisconsin...Al Hoffman spent Sunday with his parents and returned to Albia, Wednesday...Mrs. Cornell is recovering after her long illness...Mr. Martin Neill, of Weldon, visited relatives over Sunday...Daisy and Earler Trimmer, of Wy_ _ _, Ill. arrived in Murray, Tuesday...Mrs. S. A. Mr. Fritz Noures, of Grinnell, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Trimmer, this week...Mrs. Scott, of Omaha and Mrs. Chas. Scott, of Ottumwa are visiting their paretns, Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus Pratt...There have been several merry camping parties down on the river lately. The latest remedy for mosquito bites, so they tell us is onion juice applied to the face and hands. We trust the cure is no worse than the bites...Arthur Vincent is spending several days with his uncle, Rev. Williams, of Lorimor...Mrs. C. H. Falkner drove over to Lorimor Sunday afternoon to meet her husband who has been in Des Moines several weeks...W. E. Adams was in Murray, Friday on business...Rev. Randolph's son, of Louisa county, a bright promising young man of twenty-two, is lying very low with consumption at his father's home in ths place. Later; He died Sunday morning and will be buried at the Union church...Miss Bessie Tillotson, of Millersburg, spent Sunday with her many friends here...Prof. Sams, of Lincoln, Nebraska, who will have charge of our school the ensuing year is here for a few days...Mrs. Robert Oberman will soon occupy her house in the east part of town. It has been newly papered and painted throughout.

Miss Jessie Smith returned from a several months' visit in Wisconsin last week...Mr. F. W. Sells, of Des Moines, is spending a few days with his parents...Mr. J. M. Walters has been ill the past week...Mr. and Mrs. Keith and daughter, Beulah, visited friends at Grand River last week...Little Lillie Sells spent Thursday and Friday visiting her sister, Eva, in the Valentine district...Miss Lillie Thomas, of Osceola. Republican candidate for county superintendent, was in our town last week...Prof. Ott, the noted orator of Des Moines, delivered his lecture "The Bigot" to a large audience in the opera...Mr. Frank Tygart, of Kansas, is visiting in Murray...Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Mills, of Knoxville, were the guests of G. W. Vincent and family Thursday and Friday...Mrs. La Moin died Saturday night with a stroke of paralysis. She was seventy-six years of age and lived with her son. Funeral was preached Sunday at the Christian church...Rev. R. W. Matheny left Tuesday to attend the Methodist conference at Indianola...Miss Emma Schmidt who has been visiting Miss Anna Huffman returned to her home in Burlington Friday...Mr. and Mrs. F. Stultz, Mrs. Robert Cook, Mrs. Will Daniels drove out to Mr. W. G. Vincent's Saturday and dined at tea...Mrs. John Ross, of Osceola spent a few days with her sister, Mrs. Chas. Cardiff, last week...Rev. and Mrs. Robinson expect to leave for Colorado soon on account of ill health of the minister...

Miss Mary Taylor, of Lorimor, spent Sunday in Murray...Married at the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Christy, Mr. Albert Friday and Miss Mina Christy. The wedding was a very quiet affair, only relatives and a few friends being present. Mr. and Mrs. Friday expect to reside near Lorimor...Harry Clark, of Ohio, spent several days with his uncle, D. A. Clark and family...Miss Ruie Kendall began a six months term of school in the John Aller district, Monday. Miss Ruie is one of Clarke county's first class teachers...Little Ray Brotchie fell asleep in Jesus Monday morning after an illness of two weeks. He was nine years old. He was a very patient sufferer during his severe illness. He was a neat little worker in school, always doing his best. His classmates have lost a kind schoolmate and his teacher a loving pupil, whose place can never be filled. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock by Rev. Cornell. Four of his little playmates were pall-bearers, Arthur Toby, Arthur Lochrie, Charlies Hines and Harry Lowthers. Little Ray's grade all attended the funeral, each wearing a white ribbon badge. Mr. and Mrs. Brotchie have the sympathy of many friends in their deep bereavement...Rev. Matheny has returned from conference, and will preach in Murray another year...Uncle Jimmie Adams died, Saturday, at Grinnell, after a lingering illness of several months. He was a member of the M. E. church, and was about eighty years old.

Mrs. O. E. Garret returned from Marion last Friday...Mr. Joseph Sanders is improving slowly...Mr. Hoover is quite sick with fever...Mrs. Aaron Carr is visiting in Creston.

Henderson and wife at Osceola Wednesday and Thursday...Miss May Cropp visited friends in Afton this week...Born to Mr. and Mrs. Imes, a son...Mr. and Mrs. Pearl Scott returned from California...Mrs. Hall and son Lou, of Osceola, have located in Murray...Mr. Will Taylor returned from Minnesota last week.

County Letters - Murray

Mr and Mrs Elmer Kelly, of Mason City are here this week visitining with relatives.  Mrs Kelly was Miss Kittie Wick before she was married, and grew to womanhood here.

Grant Oliphant, whose dead body was found in Des Moines, Sunday formerly taught school here.

George Coon and wife returned home from Excelsior Springs, Mo last Saturday after an absence of several months.

Charles Allison rode his motor cycle over to Osceola Sunday.

John Agans and wife had a little daughter come to live with them Tuesday.

Fred Morgan, Mr. Allison's drug clerk left Monday for a visit at his old home in Cincinnati Iowa.

Charles Fogglesong is building a two-story residence on his lots in the south east part of town.

Murray is agitating a system of water works for this town.

Bear in mind that Murray will have her stock show and street fair Thursday and Friday, Sept 24 and 25.  The speaker for Thursday will be the Hon J F Miller, of Lincoln, Illinois.  And the second day, the Hon W P Hepburn, of Iowa.

County Letters - Murray

Rev. J. L. Johnson was here Saturday and Sunday in the interest of the Iowa Orphans Home. Mrs. Eilert Johnson, an old and respected citizen of this place, died at her home Tuesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. M. S. Black are visiting at their old home in Illinois. Charles Allison went to Des Moines Saturday for a visit with his parents, J. A. Allison and wife. Meetings are being held and a canvas made for the purpose of putting in an electric light plant. Mrs. Frank Andrews returned last Thursday from her visit in California.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1908

Dr. J.F. Linder Osteopathic Physician, Dr. E.I. Agnew, assistant will be in Murray, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday of each week.  Treat all diseases both acute and chronic.  Office at Caulfields residence.   The Odd Fellows, Rebeccas and other friends gave Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lormor a surprise party Monday evening at their home west of town.   E. Myers went to Des Moines on business the last of the week.   Mrs. Frank Andrews died at her home last Tuesday.  The funeral was held  at the M E church Thursday morning at 11 o'clock.  Mrs. Andrews had resided her over twenty five years.  She leaves a husband and three children.   The M E choir was entertained by Mr and Mrs Spangler Saturday evening in their home west of town.   The M S C met with Mrs G E Wright Tuesday afternoon.   Arthur Lochrie of Osceola, was a Sunday visitor with his parents.   A D Simmons of Osceola, was in Murray Monday night.   Miss Iva Scott of Des Moines, was an over Sunday visitor at the home of her uncle, B F Scott.   Miss Nellie Garrett visited at the home of her brother in Creston Monday and Tuesday.   Mrs C C Harken and daughter of Osceola were Murray visitors a few days this week.   Miss Flo Cook was a Creston visitor this last week.   Mrs. Gus Young is reported very sick.   Miss Mabel Evans is visiting in Shenandoah.
