Dr. Sherrick, unhitched Pete from the sleight, but faithful Pete, who had always landed his master safely home, regardless of the doctor's condition (for he was a heavy drinker) stayed right with the sleigh.
The doctor did not use the liquor he had with him, for he knew that meant death. Later when Dr. Sherrick was found, his hands and feet were frozen. I believe he lived three weeks.
